An upper bound elemental technique(UBET) has been carried out to predict the forming load, the deformation pattern and the extruded length of the lateral extrusion of a spider for the automotive universal joint. For the upper bound analysis, a kinematically admissible velocity field(KAVF) is proposed. From the proposed velocity field, the upper bound load, the deformation pattern and the average length of the extruded billets are determined by minimizing the total energy consumption rate which is a function of unknown velocities at each element. Experiments are carried out with antimony-lead billets at room temperature using the rectangular shaped punch. The theoretical prediction of the forming load, the deformation pattern and the extruded length are good in agreement with the experimental results.

In this paper, to satisfy the safety and economy immediately, we assume the center of lateral load in case the dynamic motion of the torsionally unbalanced structure is transformed into the static lateral load using modal analysis and proposes a method to control the design eccentricity in order to make the center of lateral load coincide with the center of strength. And when the structure is designed by proposed method, it is shown that the structure designed by proposed method does not demand excessive additional ductility in comparison with the structure designed by provisions of other seismic building code.
In this study, theoretical models and design procedures of the behavior of thin-walled simply supported steel beams with an open cross section under a large torsional effect are presented. I-sections were chosen as the cross section types. Firstly, the widely used differential equations for the lateral buckling for the pure bending moment effect in a beam element were adopted for the various moment distributions along the span of the beam. This solution was obtained for both mono-symmetric and bisymmetric sections. The buckling loads were then obtained by using the energy method. When using the energy method to solve the problem, it is possible to locate the load not only on the shear center but also at several points of the section depth. Buckling loads were obtained for six different load types. Results obtained for different load and cross section types were checked with ABAQUS software and compared with several standard rules.
In order to study the ductility and the lateral load carrying capacity of the masonry walls strengthened with CFRPs (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer sheets), three pieces of masonry walls subjected to cyclic loads with low frequency and vertical load of constant amplitude have been tested. Two different strengthening methods have been used. The strengthening efficiency is affected by the strengthening method. A simplified calculation approach has been introduced based on the experimental test results, and the theoretical results agree reasonably well with the experimental results. It is found that the critical loads, the critical displacements, the ultimate loads, the ultimate displacements and the ductile coefficients of the masonry walls strengthened with CFRPs improve remarkably (6%~57%). Therefore, the masonry structures strengthened with CFRPs are of better ductility and of better lateral load carrying capacity than the masonry structures without any strengthening measurements.
Simple and efficient way of nonlinear analysis considering elasto-plastic large deformation is introduced to calculate the strength of ring-stiffened cylinears subject to combined load of axial compression and lateral pressure. Parametric study gives various collapse modes according to the combination ratio of axial compression and lateral pressure, interaction between axial compression and lateral pressure and imperfection sensitivity of ultimate strength.
The addition of switches to a distribution feeder does, in general, increase reliability by decreasing the duration of the outage of many to the customers on the feeder. To cover its service area so that feeder-level delivery reaches sufficiently close to all customers, feeders typically split their routes many times, in what is often called a lateral feeder. It is interesting to note, however, that the effectiveness of a switch is very much dependent on the types of lateral feeder. The types of lateral are classified into two types. The first is loop lateral feeder that can connect its load to an adjacent feeder through a tie line in case that a fault occurs in its feeder and it is laid out so that every feeder has complete fault backup through re-switching of its loads to other sources like a main feeder. The second is the radial lateral feeder cannot connect its load to an adjacent line, no provision is made for contingency backup of feeders. There are no other circuits in the radial lateral feeder form which to restore power. In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of a switch installation between on the radial and loop lateral feeders to increase reliability by decreasing the duration of the outage. These results can help power utility to design the switch layouts on the radial and loop lateral feeder system.
In order to investigate the influence of installation angle of reticulated root piles(RRP) on their lateral load capacities, model tests of lateral loads on RRP with various installation angles $0^{\circ}\;, 5^{\circ}\;, 10^{\circ}\;, 15^{\circ}\;, 20^{\circ}\;,and 25^{\circ}$ are carried out. One set of RRP consists of 12 piles which are installed in circular patterns forming two concentric circles, each of which has 6 piles. Each pile made of a steel bar of 5mm in diameter and 350mm in length, is coated with sand until the bar has the diameter of 6.5mm. According to the test results, RRP's response is travily influenced by the displacement level. At low displacement level(1m), lateral load capacity increases as the installation angle is increased. However, the value of the optimum installation angle decreases as the displacement level is increased. In fact, it is found to be $17.5^{\circ}$ at 6mm lateral displacement. The ratios of the lateral resistances for the optimum installation angles to those for the vertical RRP decrease as the lateral displacements are increased. Thus the effect of slant ins angle of RRP is expected to be reduced at higher level of lateral displacement.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the behavior of a single batter pile with repeated lateral loading through model tests. Repeated loads were applied in one direction and two directions, and lateral resistance and bending moment were analyzed by varying the relative density of the ground. As a result, lateral resistance and maximum bending moment were increased in the order of Out batter, Plumb, and In batter when one-way and two-way dynamic lateral loads were applied. The depth at the maximum bending moment was more deeper with the loading. The moments at bottom layer were decreased in the order of Out batter, Plumb, and In batter but upper moments were increased with the same order. Also, various bottom and upper moments were small when the two-way dynamic lateral load was applied compared to one-way lateral load.
This experimental investigation was conducted to examine the behavior and response of high-strength material (HSM) reinforced concrete (RC) columns under combined high-axial and cyclic-increasing lateral loads. All the columns use high-strength concrete ($f_c{^{\prime}}$=100MPa) and high-yield strength steel ($f_y$=685MPa and $f_y$=785MPa) for both longitudinal and transverse reinforcements. A total of four full-scale HSM columns with amount of transverse reinforcement equal to 100% more than that required by earthquake resistant design provisions of ACI-318 were tested. The key differences among those four columns are the spacing and configuration of transverse reinforcements. Two different constant axial loads, i.e. 60% and 30% of column axial load capacity, were combined with cyclically-increasing lateral loads to impose reversed curvatures in the columns. Test results show that columns under 30% of axial load capacity behaved much more ductile and had higher lateral deformational capacity compared to columns under the 60% of axial load capacity. The columns using closer transverse reinforcement spacing have slightly higher ductility than columns with larger spacing.
One of the most popular and commonly used strengthening techniques to protect against earthquakes is to infill the holes in reinforced concrete (RC) frames with fully reinforced concrete infills. In some cases, windows and door openings are left inside infill walls for architectural or functional reasons during the strengthening of reinforced concrete-framed buildings. However, the seismic performance of multistory, multibay, reinforced concrete frames that are strengthened by reinforced concrete wing walls is not well known. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the experimental behavior of vulnerable multistory, multibay, reinforced concrete frames that were strengthened by introducing wing walls under a lateral load. For this purpose, three 2-story, 2-bay, 1/3-scale test specimens were constructed and tested under reversed cyclic lateral loading. The total shear wall (including the column and wing walls) length and the location of the bent beam bars were the main parameters of the experimental study. According to the test results, the addition of wing walls to reinforced concrete frames provided significantly higher ultimate lateral load strength and higher initial stiffness than the bare frames did. While the total shear wall length was increased, the lateral load carrying capacity and stiffness increased significantly.
