In the present paper a mechanical model to predict the compressive response of high strength short concrete columns with square cross-section confined by transverse steel is presented. The model allows one to estimate the equivalent confinement pressures exercised by transverse steel during the loading process taking into account of the interaction of the stirrups with the inner core both in the plane of the stirrups and in the space between two successive stirrups. The lateral pressure distributions at hoop levels are obtained by using a simple model of elastic beam on elastic medium simulating the interaction between stirrups and concrete core, including yielding of steel stirrups and damage of concrete core by means of the variation in the elastic modulus and in the Poisson's coefficient. Complete stress-strain curves in compression of confined concrete core are obtained considering the variation of the axial forces in the leg of the stirrup during the loading process. The model was compared with some others presented in the literature and it was validated on the basis of the existing experimental data. Finally, it was shown that the model allows one to include the main parameters governing the confinement problems of high strength concrete members such as: - the strength of plain concrete and its brittleness; - the diameter, the pitch and the yielding stress of the stirrups; - the diameter and the yielding stress of longitudinal bars; - the side of the member, etc.
A new type of connection for steel-concrete composite bridges was developed by the Steel Structures Laboratory of Ecole Poytechinque $F{\acute{e}}d{\acute{e}}rale$ de Lausanne. Resistance to longitudinal shear is based on the development of shear stresses in the confined interfaces which form the connection. Confinement is provided by the reinforced concrete slab which encloses the connection and restrains the uplift (lateral separation) of the interfaces by developing normal stresses. The experimental investigation of the interfaces, under static and cyclic loading, enabled the development of the laws describing the structural behaviour of each interface. Those laws were presented by the authors in previous papers. The current paper focuses on the continuity of the research. It presents the experimental investigation on the new connection by means of push-out tests on specimens submitted to static and cyclic shear loading. Investigation revealed that the damage in the connection, due to cyclic loading, is expressed by the accumulation of a residual slip. A safe fatigue failure criterion is proposed for the connection which enabled the verification of the connection for the fatigue limit state with respect to the limit of fatigue. A numerical model is developed which takes into account the laws describing the interface behaviour and the analytical expressions for the confinement effect, the latter obtained by performing finite element analysis. This numerical model predicts the shear resistance of the connection and enables to assess its fatigue limit which is necessary for the fatigue design proposed.
Post-earthquake reconnaissance and experimental research indicate that squat reinforced concrete (RC) columns in existing buildings or bridge piers are vulnerable to non-ductile shear failure. Recently, several experimental studies were conducted to investigate upgrading the shear resistance capacity of such columns in order to modify their failure mode to ductile one. Among these upgrading methods is the use of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) jackets. One of the preferred analytical tools to simulate the response of frame structures to earthquake loading is the lumped plasticity macromodels due to their computational efficiency and reasonable accuracy. In these models, the columns' nonlinear response is lumped at its ends. The most important input data for such type of models is the element's lateral force-displacement backbone curve. The objective of this study is to verify an analytical method to predict the lateral force-displacement ductility relationship of axially and laterally loaded rectangular RC squat columns retrofitted with FRP composites. The predicted relationship showed good accuracy when compared with tests available in the literature.

This paper is to study the effect of rectilinear confinement in high-strength concrete subjected to a monotonically increasing compressive axial loads. To investigate behavior of columns rectilinearly confined with lateral ties and longitudinal rebars, twelve specimens including two plain concrete specimens were tested. The main variables in this study are volumetric ratio of lateral ties, cistribution of lateral ties, yield strength of logitudinal steel, ratio of area of longitudinal steel to the area of cross section. The test results were not only compared with an empirical model for the stress-strain curve of rectilinearly confined high-strength concrete but also the existing model. The empirical model used calculating column capacity shows better agreement with the test results tham the existing model.
The present study simplified the moment-curvature relationship to straightforwardly determine the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. For the idealized column section, moments and neutral axis depths at different stages(first flexural crack, yielding of tensile reinforcing bar, maximum strength, and 80% of the maximum strength at the descending branch) were derived on the basis of the equilibrium condition of forces and compatibility condition. Concrete strains at the extreme compression fiber beyond the maximum strength were determined using the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete, proposed by Kim et al. The lateral load-displacement curves converted from the simplified moment-curvature relationship of columns are well consistent with test results obtained from column specimens under various parameters. The moments and the corresponding neutral axis depth at different stages were formulated as a function of longitudinal reinforcement and transverse reinforcement indices and/or applied axial load index. Overall, curvature ductility of columns was significantly affected by the axial load level as well as concrete compressive strength and the amount of longitudinal and transverse reinforcing bars.
While extensive efforts have been made in the past to develop finite element models (FEMs) for concrete-filled steel tubular columns (CFSTCs), these models may not be suitable to be used in some cases, especially in view of the utilisation of high strength steel and high strength concrete. A method is presented herein to predict the complete stress-strain curve of concrete subjected to tri-axial compressive stresses caused by axial load coupled with lateral pressure due to the confinement action in square and rectangular CFSTCs with normal and high strength materials. To evaluate the lateral pressure exerted on the concrete in square and rectangular shaped columns, an accurately developed FEM which incorporates the effects of initial local imperfections and residual stresses using the commercial program ABAQUS is adopted. Subsequently, an extensive parametric study is conducted herein to propose an empirical equation for the maximum average lateral pressure, which depends on the material and geometric properties of the columns. The analysis parameters include the concrete compressive strength ($f^{\prime}_c=20-110N/mm^2$), steel yield strength ($f_y=220-850N/mm^2$), width-to-thickness (B/t) ratios in the range of 15-52, as well as the length-to-width (L/B) ratios in the range of 2-4. The predictions of the behaviour, ultimate axial strengths, and failure modes are compared with the available experimental results to verify the accuracy of the models developed. Furthermore, a design model is proposed for short square and rectangular CFSTCs. Additionally, comparisons with the prediction of axial load capacity by using the proposed design model, Australian Standard and Eurocode 4 code provisions for box composite columns are carried out.

This paper presents experimental and analytical studies on the lateral cyclic behavior of RC columns actively confined with iron-based shape memory alloy (Fe-SMA) strips. Based on the Anexperimental study, we investigated the effectiveness of active confinement through compression testings of concrete cylinders confined by Fe SMA strips and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. The test results showed that the specimens confined with Fe SMA strips significantly increased the deformation capacity of the concrete, even under lower confining pressures, compared to those specimensconfined with CFRP sheets. The experimental results were used to develop finite-element models of RC columns confined with Fe SMA or CFRP in their plastic-hinge region. After validating the proposed analytical model through comparison with the results from a previous RC column test, a series of lateral cyclic load analyses were carried out for the RC columns confined with Fe SMA and CFRP. The analytical results revealed that the lateral cyclic behavior of the Fe SMA-confined column was greatly enhanced in terms of deformation and energy dissipation capacities compared with tothat of the as-built and CFRP-confined columns.

The recent earthquakes in worldwide have caused extensive damage to highway bridge structures. In particular, it has been demonstrated that concrete columns with inadequate lateral reinforcement contributed to the catastrophic collapse of many bridges. The poor detailing of the starter bars in these columns compounded the problem of seismic deficiency. Therefore, this study has been performed to verify the effect of lap spliced longitudinal steel and confinement steel type for the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers. Eight concrete columns were constructed with existing scale as diameter, 1.2m and height, 4.8m. 4 confinement steel types were adopted for seismic performance evaluation. All specimens were rested under inelastic cyclic loading while simultaneously subjected to a constant axial load. The longitudinal steel lap-splice is highly effective in seismic performance deterioration of reinforced concrete bridge piers.
Concrete-filled tubes (CFT), formed by an outer steel tube filled with plain or reinforced concrete inside, have been increasingly used these recent decades as columns or beam-columns, especially for tall buildings in seismic areas due to their excellent structural response. This improved behavior is derived from the effect of confinement provided by the tube, since the compressive strength of concrete increases when being subjected to hydrostatic pressure. In circular CFTs under compression, the whole tube is uniformly tensioned due to the radial expansion of concrete. Contrarily, in rectangular and square-shaped CFTs, the lateral flanges become subjected to in-plane bending derived from this volumetric expansion, and this fact implies a reduction of the confinement effect of the core. This study presents a numerical analysis of different configurations of CFT stub columns with inner stiffening plates, limited to the study of the influence of these plates on the compressive behavior without eccentricity. The final purpose is to evaluate the efficiency in terms of strength and ductility of introducing stiffeners into circular and square CFT sections under large deformation axial loading.

This paper describes the results of spalling by fire prevention of high performance concrete confining with metal-lath and containing PP fiber. According to test results, all the specimens without PP fiber shows entire failure after exposed to fire, while the other specimens confined with metal-lath has somewhat better spatting prevention performance than plain concrete specimens, which only show surface scale spatting combination of PP fiber with confinement of metal-lath leads to favorable spatting resistance. As PP fiber contents and thickness of metal-lath which is confined at concrete specimens increase, residual strength after exposed to fire shows to be increased.
