A rotational pulse-echo ultrasonic propagation imager that can inspect cylindrical specimens for material nondestructive evaluations is proposed herein. In this system, a laser-generated ultrasonic bulk wave is used for inspection, which enables a clear visualization of subsurface defects with a precise reproduction of the damage shape and size. The ultrasonic waves are generated by a Q-switched laser that impinges on the outer surface of the specimen walls. The generated waves travel through the walls and their echo is detected by a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) at the same point. To obtain the optimal Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the measured signal, the LDV requires the sensed surface to be at a right angle to the laser beam and at a predefined constant standoff distance from the laser head. For flat specimens, these constraints can be easily satisfied by performing a raster scan using a dual-axis linear stage. However, this arrangement cannot be used for cylindrical specimens owing to their curved nature. To inspect the cylindrical specimens, a circular scan technology is newly proposed for pulse-echo laser ultrasound. A rotational stage is coupled with a single-axis linear stage to inspect the desired area of the specimen. This system arrangement ensures that the standoff distance and beam incidence angle are maintained while the cylindrical specimen is being inspected. This enables the inspection of a curved specimen while maintaining the optimal SNR. The measurement result is displayed in parallel with the on-going inspection. The inspection data used in scanning are mapped from rotational coordinates to linear coordinates for visualization and post-processing of results. A graphical user interface software is implemented in C++ using a QT framework and controls all the individual blocks of the system and implements the necessary image processing, scan calculations, data acquisition, signal processing and result visualization.

In Korea, the absence of BIM use in existing civil structures and buildings is driving a demand for as-built BIM. As-built BIMs are often created using laser scanners that provide dense 3D point cloud data. Conventional static laser scanning approaches often suffer from limitations in their operability due to the difficulties in moving the equipment, the selection of scanning location, and the requirement of placing targets or extracting tie points for registration of each scanned point cloud. This paper aims at reducing the manual effort using a kinematic 3D laser scanning system based on graph-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) for continuous indoor mapping. The robotic platform carries three 2D laser scanners: the front scanner is mounted horizontally to compute the robot's trajectory and to build the SLAM graph; the other two scanners are mounted vertically to scan the profiles of surrounding environments. To reduce the accumulated error in the trajectory of the platform through loop closures, the graph-based SLAM system incorporates AdaBoost loop closure approach, which is particularly suitable for the developed multi-scanner system providing more features than the single-scanner system for training. We implemented the proposed method and evaluated it in two indoor test sites. Our experimental results show that the false positive rate was reduced by 13.6% and 7.9% for the two dataset. Finally, the 2D and 3D mapping results of the two test sites confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed graph-based SLAM.
Polycarbonate (PC) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) were welded by a combination of a diode laser and a CNC machining center. Laser beam delivered through the transparent PC and was absorbed in an opaque ABS. Polymers were melted and joined by absorbed and conducted heat. Experiments were carried out by varying working distance from 44mm to 50mm for the focus spot diameter control, laser input power from 10W to 25W, and scanning speed from 100 to 400mm/min. The weld bead and cross-section were analyzed for weld quality, and tensile results were presented through the joint force measurement. With focus distance at 48mm, laser power with 20W, and welding speed at 300mm/min, experimental results showed the best welding quality which bead size was measured to be 3.75mm. The shear strength at the given condition was $22.8N/mm^2$. Considering tensile strength of ABS is $43N/mm^2$, shear strength was sufficient to hold two materials. A single process was possible in a CNC machining system, surface processing, hole machining and welding. As a result, the process cycle time was reduced to 25%. Compared to a typical process, specimens were fabricated in a single process, with high precision.
LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) system has a profound impact on geoinformatics. The laser mapping system is now recognized as being a viable system to produce the digital surface model rapidly and efficiently. Indeed the number of its applications and users has grown at a surprising rate in recent years. Interest is now focused on the reconstruction of buildings in urban areas from LiDAR data. Although with present technology objects can be extracted and reconstructed automatically using LiDAR data, the quality issue of the results is still major concern in terms of geometric accuracy. It would be enormously beneficial to the geoinformatics industry if geometrically accurate modeling of topographic surface including man-made objects could be produced automatically. The objectives of this study are to reconstruct buildings using airborne LiDAR data and to evaluate accuracy of the result. In these regards, firstly systematic errors involved with ALS (Airborne Laser Scanning) system are introduced. Secondly, the overall LiDAR data quality was estimated based on the ground check points, then classifying the laser points was performed. In this study, buildings were reconstructed from the classified as building laser point clouds. The most likely planar surfaces were estimated by the least-square method using the laser points classified as being planes. Intersecting lines of the planes were then computed and these were defined as the building boundaries. Finally, quality of the reconstructed building was evaluated.

A light guide panel (LGP) is an element of the LCD back light unit, which is used for display devices. In this study, a laser marking process is applied to the fabrication of light guide panels as the new fabrication process. In order to obtain a light guide panel which has high luminance and uniformity, four principal parameters such as power, scanning speed, ratio of line gap, and number of line were selected as important factors. A Web-based design tool was developed to generate patterns of light guide panel, and the tool may assist the designer to develop optimized patterns. Topcon-BM7 was used for luminance measurement of each specimen 100mm$\times$100mm area. By Taguchi method optimized levels of each parameters such as 40W of power, 30mm/s of scanning speed, 100:50 ratio of pattern gap, and 90 line of pattern were found by Taguchi method.

Transport systems which are the important part of the factory automation have much influence on improving productivity. Object transport systems are driven typically by the magnetic field and conveyer belt. In recent years, as the transmission and processing of information is required more quickly, demands of optical elements and semiconductors increase. However, conventional transport systems are not adequate for transportation of those. The reason is that conveyor belts can damage precision optical elements by the contact force and magnetic systems can destroy the inner structure of semiconductor by the magnetic field. In this paper, the levitation transport system using ultrasonic wave is developed for transporting precision elements without damages. Vibration modes of each flexural beam are verified by using Laser Scanning Vibrometer.
Not merely running at the designated constant speed as the classical cruise control, the adaptive cruise control (ACC) maintains safe headway distance when the front is blocked by other vehicles. One of the most essential part of ACC System is the range sensor which can measure the position and speed of all objects in front continuously, ignore all irrelevant objects, distinguish vehicles in different lanes and lock on to the closest vehicle in the same lane. In this paper, the hierarchical object recognition algorithm (HORA) is proposed to process raw scanning laser data and acquire valid distance to target vehicle. HORA contains two principal concepts. First, the concept of life quantifies the reliability of range data to filter off the spurious detection and preserve the missing target position. Second, the concept of conformation checks the mobility of each obstacle and tracks the position shift. To estimate and predict the vehicle position Kalman filter is used. Repeatedly updated covariance matrix determines the bound of valid data. The algorithm is emulated on computer and tested on-line with our ACC vehicle.

Existing buildings now represent the greatest opportunity to improve building energy efficiency. Building performance analysis is becoming increasingly important because decision makers can have a better visualization of their building's performance and quickly make the solution for improving building energy efficiency and reducing environmental impacts. Nowadays, building information models (BIMs) have been widely created during the design phase of new buildings, and it can be easily imported to third party software to conduct various analyses. However, a BIM is not always available for all existing buildings. Even if a BIM is available during the design and construction phases, it is very challenging to keep updating it while a building is aged. A manual process to create or update a BIM is very time consuming and labor intensive. A laser scanning technology has been a popular tool to create as-is BIM. However it still needs labor-intensive manual processes to create a BIM out of point clouds. This paper introduces automatic as-is simplified BIM creation from point clouds for energy simulations. A framework of decision support system that can assist decision makers on retrofits for existing buildings is introduced as well. A case study on a residential house was tested in this study to validate the proposed framework, and the technical feasibility of the developed system was positively demonstrated.

Generally, micro-stereolithography technology uses laser and complex optical system as light source and light delivery system, respectively. In this research, a novel micro-stereolithography technology that uses UV lamp that is more economical than UV laser as light source and optical fiber that is simpler than previous light delivery system has been developed. Furthermore, precise control system that is composed of 3-axis linear stage and shutter has been used to fabricate truly three dimensional micro-structure. For confirming the feasibility of developed micro-stereolithography apparatus, the solidification experiments were conducted. The solidification widths and depths datum of photopolymer as varying scanning speed of the UV light have been obtained. Using developed apparatus, some micro structures were fabricated successfully.

Currently, satellite image, aerial image and airborne laser scanning data are mostly used to build 3D image models. However, we are in need of quality 3D image models as current models cannot express topographic and features most elaborately and realistically. When making 3D image models, the model is first built and textures from terrestrial photos are applied to add realistic features to the model. This study analyzed techniques to use photogrammetry and laser scanning data to create a 3D image models with topography, building and statue that emphasize spatial accuracy, delicate depiction and photo-realistic imaging. 3D image models with spatial accuracy and photographic texture were built to be served via 3D image map services systems on the internet. The 3D image models can be used for various purposes, such as daylight and view right analysis, landscape analysis, facility management system.
