  • Laser cladding processing allows rapid transfer of heat to the material being processed with minimum conduction into base metal, resulting in low total heat input. The effects of $CO_2$ laser cladding with powder feeding on mechanical properties of VERSAlloy were studied. Their low melting point (under 1093$^{\circ}C$) enables overlays to be applied with minimum dilution and base metal distortion. Experiment results indicated that powder feeding speed and quantity were important for laser cladding with powder feeding. The powder feeding speed should be adapted according to cladding speed for good shaping of clad layer. The effect of heat on the HAZ size can be limited and the growth of grain size of HAZ size was not serious.

  • Aluminum alloy which is one of the light materials has been tried to apply to light weight vehicle body. In order to do that, welding technology is very important. In case of the aluminum laser welding, the strength of welded part is reduced due to porosity, underfill, and magnesium loss. To overcome these problems, laser welding of aluminum with filler wire was suggested. In this study, experiment about laser welding of AA5182 aluminum alloy with AA5356 filler wire was performed according to process parameters such as laser power, welding speed and wire feed rate. The tensile strength was measured to find the weldability of laser welding with filler wire. The models to estimate tensile strength were suggested using three regression models and one neural network model. For regression models, one was the multiple linear regression model, another was the second order polynomial regression model, and the other was the multiple nonlinear regression model. Neural network model with 2 hidden layers which had 5 and 3 nodes respectively was investigated to find the most suitable model for the system. Estimation performance was evaluated for each model using the average error rate. Among the three regression models, the second order polynomial regression model had the best estimation performance. For all models, neural network model has the best estimation performance.

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) is a commonly used conducting transparent oxide film (CTO) used in flat panel display applications. Direct write laser ablation is sometimes employed for ITO patterning and it is important that the substrate material and remaining ITO be affected as little as possible by the laser ablation. In this investigation, femtosecond laser ablation of ITO was studied to identify laser processing parameters which cleanly ablated ITO with a minimum of damage to a glass substrate and surrounding ITO. The Ti:Sapphire chirp pulse amplified femtosecond laser used for the experiments had a wavelength of 775nm and produced pulses with a duration of 150fs at a rate of 2 kHz. Ablation was carried out at a sufficiently high panel scanning speed that single ablation spots could be studied. The pulse energy was adjusted to determine feasible spot diameters and depths which could be ablated into the ITO without damaging the glass substrate. Next, ablation of lines without glass damage was also demonstrated. Experiments were also performed with a high repetition rate (100kHz) femtosecond laser.

  • In this study, an FPGA-based sealer inspection system was developed to inspect the sealer applied to install vehicle glass on a car body. The sealer is a liquid or paste-like material that promotes adhesion such as sealing and waterproofing for mounting and assembling vehicle parts to a car body. The system installed in the existing vehicle design parts line does not detect the sealer in the glass rotation section and takes a long time to process. This study developed a line laser camera sensor and an FPGA vision signal processing module to solve this problem. The line laser camera sensor was developed such that the resolution and speed of the camera for data acquisition could be modified according to the irradiation angle of the laser. Furthermore, it was developed considering the mountability of the entire system to prevent interference with the sealer ejection machine. In addition, a vision signal processing module was developed using the Zynq-7020 FPGA chip to improve the processing speed of the algorithm that converted the profile to the sealer shape image acquired from a 2D camera and calculated the width and height of the sealer using the converted profile. The performance of the developed sealer application inspection system was verified by establishing an experimental environment identical to that of an actual automobile production line. The experimental results confirmed the performance of the sealer application inspection at a level that satisfied the requirements of automotive field standards.

  • A biodegradable nanofiber scaffolds using electrospining provide fibrous guidance cues for controlling cell fate that mimic the native extracellular matrix (ECM). It can create a pattern using conventional electrospining method, but has a difficulty to generate one or more pattern structures. Femtosecond(fs) laser ablation has much interested in patterning on biomaterials in order to distinguish the fundamental or systemic interaction between cell and material surface. The ablated materials with a short pulse duration using femtosecond laser that allows for precise removal of materials without transition of the inherent material properties. In this study, linear grooves and circular craters were fabricated on electrospun nanofiber scaffolds (poly-L-lactide(PLLA)) by femtosecond laser patterning processes. As parametric studies, pulse energy and beam spot size were varied to determine the effects of the laser pulse on groove size. We confirmed controlling pulse energy to $5{\mu}J-20{\mu}J$ and variation of lens maginfication of 2X, 5X, 10X, 20X created grooves of width to approximately $5{\mu}m-50{\mu}m$. Our results demonstrate that femtosecond laser processing is an effective means for flexibly structuring the surface of electrospun PLLA nanofibers.

  • We describe the preparation and characterization of epitaxial thin films made with high temperature superconductor, $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$. The influence of processing parameters for YBCO thin films on MgO substrates in-situ grown by the pulsed laser deposition, including parameters of a laser beam energy, oxygen pressure, substrate temperature, target-substrate dis-tance is discussed. The characteristics of YBCO thin films were analyzed by using XRD, R-T measurement, AFM, crosssectional TEM, and RBS. For examples of microwave device applications, The fabrication and characterization of the microstrip lowpass filter and bandpass filter are also presented.

  • As a tool for strain measurement to work with screw driven or hydraulic material test systems, in which mechanical vibration is inherent, SSDG(Speckle Strain/Displacement Gage), ESP(Electronic Speckle Photography) and its 3-dimension version SDSP are investigated for the theory and practical appliance. Through tension test of steel strips, their validity and shortcomings are examined. As the results, it has been shown that, although SSDG and ESP provide direct measurement of in-plane strain in one direction, they are so sensitive to the out-plane displacement. On the other hand, SDSP which is aided with DIC (Digital Image Correlation) technique to trace the movement of the speckles provides not only in-plane 2-dimensional displacement field, but also out-of-plane displacement simultaneously. However, because the DIC is time-consuming, not automated yet and it needs post-processing to evaluate strain from the displacement field, SDSP appears to be not adequate as a real time sensor.

  • Electron beam was applied on the low carbon steel in order to fabricate Metal/Metal GBM(Graded Boundary Material). Ni sheet was placed on the steel substrate. The electron beam was irradiated on the surface and produced a homogeous alloyed layer. Sequential repetition of electron beam treatments for 4 times resulted in 8mm thick graded layer. To determine each layers property, optical microscopy, XRD, microhardness tester and EDS were used. The residual stress was measured by the low angle x-ray diffraction method. The graded boundary layer was stepwise profile, but Ni content incresed up to 80 wt% and Fe content decreased 20 wt% near surface. Each layers microstructure and hardness varied by different Fe/Ni composition. The compressive residual stress was induced by martensite transformation in the 1st and End layers and the shrinkage cracks were formed in graded layer by rapid cooling.
