Recently, from general machine parts and automobile parts using carbon steel to a mold, there has been efforts for improving durability and attrition resistance of these parts. Especially, heat treatment with laser which works fast and automatically can be used for the mass production with high quality. Moreover, local heat treatment can be used to handle with complex and precise parts. Accordingly, we analyzed hardening characteristics of carbon steel using the finite element method and compare the experimental results to have more reliability. We also proved the cause of thermal deformation with temperature and stress distribution by heat treatment. After these analysis and experimental, we found that each maximum hardness of the two tests was 728 Hv and 700 Hv, on condition of $1050^{\circ}C$ heating temperature, and 2 mm/sec laser speed. We also found that difference of surface stress-distribution was occurred, and this makes deformation mode up after heat treatment.
Surface heat treatment of SM45C round bar by diode laser was simulated to find it's condition by using commercial finite element code MARC. Due to axisymmetric geometry, a quarter of model for SM45C round bar was considered and user subroutines were applied to boundary condition for the heat transfer. Material properties such as conductivity, specific heat and mass density were given as a function of temperature. Rotation speed of round bar and feed rate of beam were considered to design heat source model. Shape parameter values of heat source were determined by beam profile. As results, Three dimensional heat source model for diode laser beam conditions of surface hardening has been designed by the comparison between the finite element analysis results and experimental data on SM45C round bar. Diode laser surface hardening for SM45C round bar was successfully simulated and it should be useful to determine optimal heat treatment condition.
Recently, metal molding has become essential not only for automobile parts, but also mass production, and has greatly influenced production costs as well as the quality of products. Its surface has been treated by carburizing, nitriding and induction hardening, but these existing treatments cause considerable deformation and increase the expense of postprocessing after treatment; furthermore, these treatments cannot be easily applied to parts that requiring the hardening of only a certain section. This is because the treatment cannot heat the material homogeneously, nor can it heat all of it. Laser surface treatment was developed to overcome these disadvantages, and, when the laser beam is irradiated on the surface and laser speed is appropriate, the laser focal position is rapidly heated and the thermal energy of surface penetrates the material after irradiation, finally imbuing it with a new mechanical characteristic by the process of self-quenching. This research estimates the material characteristic after efficient and functional surface treatment using HPDL, which is more efficient than the existing CW Nd:YAG laser heat source. To estimate this, microstructural changes and hardness characteristics of three parts (the surface treatment part, heat affect zone, and parental material) are observed with the change of laser beam speed and surface temperature. Moreover, the depth of the hardened area is observed with the change of the laser beam speed and temperature.

For boron doping on n-type silicon wafer, around $1,000^{\circ}C$ doping temperature is required, because of the relatively low solubility of boron in a crystalline silicon comparing to the phosphorus case. Boron doping by fiber laser annealing and lamp furnace heat treatment were carried out for the uniformly deposited p-a-Si:H layer. Since the uniformly deposited p-a-Si:H layer by cluster is highly needed to be doped with high temperature heat treatment. Amorphous silicon layer absorption range for fiber laser did not match well to be directly annealed. To improve the annealing effect, we introduce additional lamp furnace heat treatment. For p-a-Si:H layer with the ratio of $SiH_4:B_2H_6:H_2$=30:30:120, at $200^{\circ}C$, 50 W power, 0.2 Torr for 30 min. $20\;mm\;{\times}\;20\;mm$ size fiber laser cut wafers were activated by Q-switched fiber laser (1,064 nm) with different sets of power levels and periods, and for the lamp furnace annealing, $980^{\circ}C$ for 30 min heat treatment were implemented. To make the sheet resistance expectable and uniform as important processes for the $p^+$ layer on a polished n-type silicon wafer of (100) plane, the Q-switched fiber laser used. In consequence of comparing the results of lifetime measurement and sheet resistance relation, the fiber laser treatment showed the trade-offs between the lifetime and the sheet resistance as $100\;{\omega}/sq.$ and $11.8\;{\mu}s$ vs. $17\;{\omega}/sq.$ and $8.2\;{\mu}s$. Diode level device was made to confirm the electrical properties of these experimental results by measuring C-V(-F), I-V(-T) characteristics. Uniform and expectable boron heavy doped layers by fiber laser and lamp furnace are not only basic and essential conditions for the n-type crystalline silicon solar cell fabrication processes, but also the controllable doping concentration and depth can be established according to the deposition conditions of layers.

Laser surface hardening technologies have been used to improve characteristics of wear and to enhance the fatigue resistance for automotive parts. The objective of this research work is to investigate the influence of the process parameters, such as power of laser and defocused spot position, on the characteristics of laser heat treatment for the case of SM45C medium carbon steel. CW Nd:YAG laser is selected as the heat source. The optical lens with the elliptical profile is designed to obtain a wide heat treatment area with a uniform hardness. From the results of the experiments, it has been shown that the maximum hardness is approximatly 780 Hv when the power and the travel speed of laser are 1,095 W and 0.6 m/min, respectively. In addition, the hardening width using the elliptical lens was three time larger than that using the defocusing of laser beam.

This study is about an effect on a characteristics of the laser heat treatment as a optic systems which have a transverse beam mode each other. An experiment are carried out using a circular gaussian beam optics and rectangular beam optics. Generally, the optic system which has a uniform power intensity is mainly used in the laser heat treatment process. In this study, we would like to carried out experiments simultaneously using two optic systems and research the differences from a characteristics of the laser heat treatment.
AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steels) has been increasingly employed by global automotive OEMs in order to satisfy strengthened regulations and reduce weight for fuel efficiency. Hot stamping using boron steels in AHSS increases not only formability but also strength. The typical hot-stamped automotive part is the center pillar that is critical for vehicle side impact. However, the hot-stamped part can be risky for the passenger safety caused by brittle fracture under a vehicle collision. The high power diode laser is suitable for the heat treatment giving AHSS increased elongation that prevents brittle fracture in car crash. Therefore, local softening by laser heat treatment for energy absorption area on the hot-stamped part improves crash-worthiness.

Surface heat treatment using a laser beam or an electron beam is studied through numerical analyses and experiments. For the surface heat treatment process, a theoretical model is developed to predict the effects of laser beam power, travel speed and properties of a workpiece on the depth and width of the heat affected zone(HAZ). The shape of HAZ and the hardness of heat-treated surface are experimentally obtained using an electron beam. Three materials(SS41, S45C and S55C) are selected as workpiece materials. The hardness of HAZ is increased up to 3 times for materials of a low carbon content. The results of the numerical analysis are compared with those of experiments. The comparison shows that the numerical model predicts larger depths and widths.

Laser heat treatment is an effective technique used to improve the tribological properties and also to increase the service life of automobile components such as camshafts, crankshatfs, lorry brake drums and gears. High power $CO_2$ lasers and Nd:YAG lasers are employed for localized hardening of materials and hence are of potential application in the automobile industries. The heat is conducted rapidly into the bulk of the specimen causing self-quenching action to occur and the formation of matrensitic structure. In this investigation, the microstructrual features occurring in Nd:YAG laser hardening SM45C and $STD_11$ steel are discussed with the use of optical microscopic and scanning electron microscopic analysis. Moreover, This paper describes the optimisation of the processing parameters for maximum hardened depth of SM45C and $STD_11$ steel specimens of 10mm thickness by using CW:YAG laser.
In this study, an AISI 316 L alloy was manufactured using a selective laser melting (SLM) process. The tensile and impact toughness properties of the SLM AISI 316 L alloy were examined. In addition, stress relieving heat treatment (650℃ / 2 h) was performed on the as-built SLM alloy to investigate the effects of heat treatment on the mechanical properties. In the as-built SLM AISI 316 L alloy, cellular dendrite and molten pool structures were observed. Although the molten pool did not disappear following heat treatment, EBSD KAM analytical results confirmed that the fractions of the low- and high-angle boundaries decreased and increased, respectively. As the heat treatment was performed, the yield strength decreased, but the tensile strength and elongation increased only slightly. Impact toughness results revealed that the impact energy increased by 33.5% when heat treatment was applied. The deformation behavior of the SLM AISI 316 L alloy was also examined in relation to the microstructure through analyses of the tensile and impact fracture surfaces.
