  • The characteristics of the laser metal deposition parameters were studied to enhance the deposition efficiency using a diode pumped disk laser. STD61 hot tool steel plate and Fe based AISI M2 alloy were used as a substrate and powder for the laser metal deposition, respectively. Among the laser metal deposition parameters the laser power, track pitch and powder feed rate were used to estimate the deposition efficiency. From the experimental results, the deposition efficiency was shown to be excellent when 1.8kW laser power 500um track pitch and 10g/min of the powder feed rate were used. For this optimal condition the average hardness of the deposition track was approximately 830HV, and this value is 30~50% better than the hardness of the commercially produced tool steel after heat treatment.

  • As an active emission display using emissive polymer has had much attention recently, needs for a selective patterning of emissive layer for those displays have been increased abruptly. Therefore, the various laser sources in terms of its wavelength has been used for laser direct patterning. In this work, the feasibility of those processes is examined using numerical analysis and the experimental investigation. A sample has multi-layered structure, emissive polymer on aluminum which is deposited on a glass substrate. Key factors for optimizing the laser patterning of the emissive polymer are considered into the control of ablation products, large-sized particle, and the choice of the appropriate wavelength for minimizing the heat affected zone and the remnant layer.

The objective of the study is to fabricate several 3-dimensional objects by stacking multi-layers as well as to find out some basic aspects of a rapid prototyping with laser chemical vapor deposition such as deposition characteristics with traversing speed of the laser, possible problems in stacking multi-layers etc. The limit speed of the laser that can grow a tilted SiC rod was found in this study, and laser directing writing that occurs over the limit speed was also investigated. Finally, a zigzag-shaped rod, a spiral-shaped rod, a wall and a square duct were successfully fabricated with laser chemical vapor deposition of tetramethylsilane

  • In this study, AISI M2 powder was selected primarily through various literature in order to improve the hardness and wear resistance. Among the laser metal deposition parameters, laser power was studied to improve the deposition efficiency in the laser metal deposition using a diode pumped disk laser. SKD61 hot work steel plate and AISI M2 powder were used as a substrate and powder for laser metal deposition, respectively. Fixed parameters are CTWD, focal position, travel speed, powder feed rate, etc. Experiments for the laser metal deposition were carried out by changing laser power. Through optical micrographs analysis of cross-section in LMD track, effect of the major parameters were predicted by track pitch. As the track pitch increased, so the reheated zone width, the overlap width and the minimum thickness was decreased. The hardness was decreased in the HAZ area, the hardness in the reheated HAZ area was decreased significantly and regularly in particular.

  • This study was performed to investigate the deposition mechanism of SiO$_2$ by ArF excimer laser(l93nm) CVD with Si$_2$H$\_$6/ and N$_2$O gas mixture and evaluate laser CVD quantitatively by modeling. With ArF excimer laser CVD, thin films can be deposited at low temperature(below 300$^{\circ}C$), with less damage and good uniformity owing to generation of conformal reaction species by singular wavelength of the laser beam. In this study, new model of SiO$_2$ deposition process by laser CVD was introduced and deposition rate was simulated by computer with the basis on this modeling. And simulation results were compared with experimental results measured at various conditions such as reaction gas ratio, chamber pressure, substrate temperature and laser beam intensity.

  • Laser chemical vapor deposition can be used as a new approach for a rapid prototyping technique. The purpose of the study is to fabricate several 3-dimensional objects that are relatively simple as well as to find the characteristics of SiC rod growth that is the first step in developing a new rapid prototyping technique with laser chemical vapor deposition. In the study, SiC rods were generated with varying precursor pressure for 5 minutes. Deposition rates with varying precursor pressure, shapes of rods, surface roughness and component organization were investigated, in particular. Finally, several simple objects like a branch or a propeller were successfully fabricated using laser chemical vapor deposition.

  • As a promising and novel manufacturing technology, laser aided direct metal deposition (DMD) process produces near-net-shape functional metal parts directly from 3-D CAD models by repeating laser cladding layer by layer. The key of the build-up mechanism is the effective control of powder delivery and laser power to be irradiated into the melt-pool. A feedback control system using two sets of optical height sensors is designed for monitoring the melt-pool and real-time control of deposition dimension. With the feedback height control system, the dimensions of part can be controlled within designed tolerance maintaining real time control of each layer thickness. Clad nugget shapes reveal that the feedback control can affect the nugget size and morphology of microstructure. The pore/void level can be controlled by utilizing pulsed-mode laser and proper design of deposition tool-path. With the present configuration of the control system, it is believed that more innovation of the DMD process is possible to the deposition of layers in 3-D slice.

An SKD61 hot work steel plate and AISI M2 powder were used as a substrate and powder for laser metal deposition, respectively. The quality of the track surface and cross-section after applying the single-layer method was better than that obtained from applying the multi-layer method. As the laser power increased, the track thickness was increased, and the surface roughness deviation was decreased. In laser power condition of 1.6kW, the maximum hardness of the deposition track was 790Hv. This value was 40% better than the hardness of the SKD61 after heat treatment.

  • The optimization of the cladding parameters was studied to maximize the deposition efficiency in the laser cladding using a low power pulsed Nd:YAG laser. STS304 stainless steel plate and Co alloy powder were used as a substrate and powder for cladding, respectively. The six cladding parameters were selected through preliminary experiments and their effects on the deposition efficiency were analyzed statistically. Experiments were designed and carried out using the Taguchi experimental method using a L18 orthogonal array. It was found from the results of analysis of variance(ANOVA) that the powder feed position and powder feed angle had the most significant effects on the deposition efficiency, but the powder feed rate and laser focal position had nearly no effects. The deposition efficiency could be maximized at 0mm of the powder feed position and 50o of the powder feed angle in the experimental range. From this experimental analysis, a new laser cladding head with 20o of the powder feed angle was designed and manufactured. With a new laser cladding head, the highest deposition efficiency of 12.2% could be obtained.

  • A method is proposed for the improvement of deposition reproducibility in the selective electrodeposition process using laser masking and DC voltage. Selective electrodeposition using laser masking and DC voltage can achieve a deposited layer with micro patterns. However, selective electrodeposition using laser masking and DC voltage have a critical problem: the lack of reproducibility in selective deposition. The reproducibility of selective electrodeposition can be improved by a new process that consists of laser masking, two-step electro-deposition, laser scribing, and ultrasonic cleaning. The experiments in this study show that the reproducibility of selective deposition can be successfully improved by the combination of two-step electrodeposition and laser scribing.
