  • Novel optical techniques are presented for three-dimensional tracking of nanoparticles; Optical Serial Sectioning Microscopy (OSSM) and Ratiometric Total Internal Reflection Fluorescent Microscopy (R-TIRFM). OSSM measures optically diffracted particle images, the so-called Point Spread Function (PSF), and dotermines the defocusing or line-of-sight location of the imaged particle measured from the focal plane. The line-of-sight Brownian motion detection using the OSSM technique is proposed in lieu of the more cumbersome two-dimensional Brownian motion tracking on the imaging plane as a potentially more effective tool to nonintrusively map the temperature fields for nanoparticle suspension fluids. On the other hand, R-TIRFM is presented to experimentally examine the classic theory on the near-wall hindered Brownian diffusive motion. An evanescent wave field from the total internal reflection of a 488-nm bandwidth of an argon-ion laser is used to provide a thin illumination field of an order of a few hundred nanometers from the wall. The experimental results show good agreement with the lateral hindrance theory, but show discrepancies from the normal hindrance theory. It is conjectured that the discrepancies can be attributed to the additional hindering effects, including electrostatic and electro-osmotic interactions between the negatively charged tracer particles and the glass surface.

  • More accurate inspection method for facilities of nuclear power plants is required to guarantee the continuous and stable energy supply. The portion of inspection for pipes and pressure vessels is relatively big in the power plants. Conventional inspection methods using ultrasonic wave, x-ray and eddy current for nondestructive testing in nuclear power plants have been performed as the method of contact with objects to be inspected. With this reason these methods have been taken relatively much time, money and manpower. And the area to be inspected is limited by the location of probe or film. These difficulties make the inspection into a time-consuming work. We propose an optical defect detection method using phase shifting realtime holographic interferometry. This method has an advantage that the inspection can be performed at a time for relatively wide area illuminated by the laser beam, a coherent light source and can help an inspector recognize not only defects but also the high stressed areas. In this paper we show that the quantitative measurement using holographic interferometry and image processing for defect in pressure vessels is possible.

  • The engine combustion is one of the most important processes affecting performance and emissions. One effective way to improve the engine combustion is to control the motion of the charge inside a cylinder by means of optimum induction system design, because the flame speed is mainly determined by the turbulence at compression(TDC) process in S.I. engine. It is believed that the tumble and swirl motion generated during intake stroke breaks down into small-scale turbulence in the compression stroke of the cycle. However, the exact nature of this relationship is not well known. This paper describes the tumble flow measurements inside the cylinder of a 4-valve S.I. engine using laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) under motoring(non-firing) conditions. This is conducted on an optically assesed single cylinder research engine under motored conditions at an engine speed of 1000rpm. Three different cylinder head intake port configurations are studied to develop a better understanding the tumble flow generation, development, and breakdown mechanisms.

  • Platform Screen Door(PSD) has been installed in train manual operation section(ATS/ATC) by SeoulMetro since 2005. PSDs are now operating at 17 stations in SeoulMetro lines. As a result, it increases the safety of passenger, makes a comfortable platform and saves the energy of air conditioning. For PSD operation, train shall stop within 600mm of the train stop reference point. In train manual operation section, the detection system of train position is required to notify the train driver of train position and to ensure the condition that train stops the correct position for PSD operation. To detect the train stop position, the optical sensor shall be installed at platform. However, in case of SeoulMetro lines, the detection criterions of the train correct position stop are different because of using various types of trains which have different size and shape of front cars. In this paper, to solve this problem, the precise detection algorithm of the train stop at the correct position is used, and Laser distance measure sensor is introduced to notify the distance form the reference point of the train correct stop to train driver. This system has been applying to Seoul Metro line total.

  • Incoherent broadband optical sources have been applied in various areas such as a light source for optical device characterization, fiber-optic gyroscopes$^{(1)}$ , and spectrum sliced light source in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system$^{(2)}$ . To utilize the inherent low loss in silica optical fibers, various types of incoherent light sources are being developed. Among the light sources, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a rare earth doped fiber has benefits in temperature stability, high output power, low polarization dependence over semiconductor diodes$^{(3)}$ . Recently erbium doped fibers (EDF) have been intensively researched for ASE sources as well as optical amplifiers$^{(4)}$ . The spectrum of ASE from an EDF, however, is limited in the 1520~1560 nm range in conventional configurations. In this letter we described a new broadband ASE source which included both the conventional ASE band of Er$^{3+}$ ion, 1520nm~1560nm and ASE band from Tm$^{3+}$ ions that extends the bandwidth further. For the first time, to the best knowledge of authors, a fiber ASE source based on the energy transfer between Er$^{3+}$ and Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the range of 1460~1550 nm, has been demonstrated using a single 980nm pump laser diode. • This paper describes the design process of floor damping material optimization to reduce structure borne noise. This process uses finite element analysis(FEA) along with experimental techniques to complement each other. The objective of this approach was to develop an optimized damping material application layout and thickness at the initial design stage. The first step is to find the sensitivity areas of vehicle body without damping material applied using FEA. In order to determine the high vibration areas of the floor panel, the velocity was measured using a scanning laser vibrometer from 20 Hz to 300 Hz. To excite the floor panel vibration, shaker was placed at the front suspension attachment point. The second step is the optimization process to determine the light weight solution of damping material. The design guideline of damping material was suggested that the lightweight solution was verified using test result of road noise. Design engineer could efficiently decide the design variable of damping material using parameter analysis results in early design stage.

  • This study examined the effects of multiple recycling on deinkability and properties of recycled paper from laser computer printout (LCPO). First, alkaline paper with a 20% printed area was disintegrated by TAPPI standard disintegrator at room temperature. After dewatering, the pulp was flotated and dried in oven at80$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs. A sequence of wetting, disintegrating, flotating and drying was one recycling cycle and this cyclic treatment was repeated from zero to five times. The recycled handsheet dropped to 90% of the original brightness after five cycles, and lost the most brightness after five cycles, and lost the most brightness in the first two cycles. However, it had a gain of 10% in opacity after five cycles as the same as the case of nonprinting. And, in this study, the method for determining residual ink(toner) content in recycled handsheets ere established by means of SEM-EDX and Py-GC. The change of residual ink percentage on recycled paper showed the effect of recycling numbers on deinkability of waste paper. A slight decrease in deinkability was noted for the recycled handsheets, which may be due to the change of fiber surface free energy connected with fiber swelling.

  • The need of heavy and unconventional crude oil as an energy source is increasing day by day, so does the importance of petroleomics: the pursuit of detailed knowledge of heavy crude oil. Crude oil needs techniques with ultra-high resolving capabilities to resolve its complex characteristics. Therefore, ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry represented by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) has been successfully applied to the study of heavy and unconventional crude oils. The analysis of crude oil with high resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) has pushed analysis to the limits of instrumental and methodological capabilities. Each high-resolution mass spectrum of crude oil may routinely contain over 50,000 peaks. To visualize and effectively study the large amount of data sets is not trivial. Therefore, data processing and visualization methods such as Kendrick mass defect and van Krevelen analyses and statistical analyses have played an important role. In this regard, it will not be an overstatement to say that the success of FT-ICR MS to the study of crude oil has been critically dependent on data processing methods. Therefore, this review offers introduction to peotroleomic data interpretation methods.

  • An experimental study on the flow over the axisymmetric backward-facing step was carried out. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of the separating streamline curvature on the reattachment length and to understand the structure of recirculating flows. Local mean and fluctuating velocity components were measured in the separating and reattaching axisymmetric region of turbulent boundary layer on the wall of convex cylinder placed in a water tunnel by using 2-color 4-beam fiber optics laser Doppler velocimetry. The study demonstrates that the reattachment length increases with increasing separating streamline curvature. It is also observed that the reverse flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy increase with an increase in the separating streamline curvature. In addition, the behavior of maximum turbulent stresses show that the effect of separating streamline curvature is larger in the region of recirculating zone(X/H<2) than in the region of reattachment point.

  • Photonic crystal solar cells have the potential for addressing the disparate length scales in polymer photovoltaic materials, thereby confronting the major challenge in solar cell technology: efficiency. One must achieve simultaneously an efficient absorption of photons with effective carrier extraction. Unfortunately the two processes have opposing requirements. Efficient absorption of light calls for thicker PV active layers whereas carrier transport always benefits from thinner ones, and this dichotomy is at the heart of an efficiency/cost conundrum that has kept solar energy expensive relative to fossil fuels. This dichotomy persists over the entire solar spectrum but increasingly so near a semiconductor's band edge where absorption is weak. We report a 2-D, photonic crystal morphology that enhances the efficiency of organic photovoltaic cells relative to conventional planar cells. The morphology is developed by patterning an organic photoactive bulk heterojunction blend of Poly(3-(2-methyl-2-hexylcarboxylate) thiophene-co-thiophene) and PCBM via PRINT, a nano-embossing method that lends itself to large area fabrication of nanostructures. The photonic crystal cell morphology increases photocurrents generally, and particularly through the excitation of resonant modes near the band edge of the organic PV material. The device performance of the photonic crystal cell showed a nearly doubled increase in efficiency relative to conventional planar cell designs. Photonic crystals can also enhance performance of other optoelectronic devices including organic laser.
