  • The local hydrulic characteristics in subchannels of 5$\times$5 nuclear fuel bundles with spacer grids were measured at upstream and downstream of the spacer grid for the investigation of the spacer grid effects on turbulent flow structure by using an LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimeter). The measured parameters are axial velocity and turbulent intensity, skewness factor, and flatness factor. Pressure drops were also measured to evaluate the loss coefficient for the spacer grid and the friction factor for rod bundles. From these data, it was found that the turbulent mixing and forced mixing occur up to $x/D^h=10$ and 20 from the spacer grid, respectively. The turbulence decay behind spacer grid behaves in the similar decay rate as turbulent flow through mesh grids or screens. Mixing factors useful in subchannel analysis code were correlated from the data and show the highest value near spacer grid and then have a stable values.

  • We have studied the effects of oxygen partial pressure change on the physical properties of the $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ thin films grown by Pulsed laser Deposition. Contrary to the previous reports, thin films of high curie temperature were successfully synthesized at very low oxygen partial pressure ($1.0{\times}10^{-5}$, $1.0{\times}10^{-6}Torr$). These observations indicate that the shape of plasma plume and the kinetic energy of the ablated species in it play an important role in determining the quality of samples. We also fabricated p-n heterojunction of $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ and Nb-doped $SrTiO_3$. The current-voltage curves show rectifying behavior and, furthermore, the current responses to the applied magnetic field, indicating a potential possibility of device applications.

  • Pulsed lasers at the 613 nm and 1064 nm wavelengths on nanoseconds have been utilized to characterize the damage on Si photodiode exposed to intense illumination. Morphological damages and structural changes at sites on the photodiode irradiated during microseconds of laser pulses were analyzed by FE-SEM images and XRD patterns, respectively. The removal of oxide coating, ripple, melting marks, ridges, and crater on photodiodes were definitely observed in order of increasing the pulse intensities generated above the damage threshold. Then, the degradation in photosensitivity of the Si photodiode irradiated by high power density pulses was measured as a function of laser irradiation time at the various wavelengths. The free charge carrier and thermal diffusion mechanisms could have been invoked to characterize the damage. The relative photosensitivity data calculated using the thermal diffusion model proposed in this paper have been compared with the experimental data irradiated above the damage threshold.

  • Antimony (Sb) doped ZnO thin films (0.1 at.%) were deposited on sapphire (0001) substrates at various temperatures (200 - 600$^{\circ}C$) by using pulsed laser deposition technique. All the thin films have been characterized by X-ray diffractometer, atomic force microscopy and spectrophotometer to investigate their structural, morphological and optical properties, respectively. Hall measurements were also carried out to identify the electrical properties of the thin films. These thin films were constituted in wurtzite structure with the preferential orientation of (002) diffraction plane and had as high as 80% optical transmission in the visible range. The bandgap energy also was determined by spectrophotometer which was around 3.28 eV. Hall measurements results revealed that the Sb dope ZnO thin film (0.1 at.%) grown at $500^{\circ}C$ exhibited p-type conduction with a carrier concentration of $8.633\times10^{16}\;cm^{-3}$, a mobility of $1.41\;cm^2/V{\cdot}s$ and a resistivity of $51.8\;\Omega{\cdot}cm$. We have successfully achieved p-type conduction in antimony doped ZnO thin films with low doping level even though the electrical properties are not favorable. This paper suggests the feasibility of p-type doping with large-size-mismatched dopant by using pulsed laser deposition.

  • Spark-induced breakdown spectroscopy (SIBS) utilizes an electric spark to induce a strong plasma for collecting atomic emissions. This study analyses the potential for usinga compact SIBS instead of conventional laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in discriminating rocks and soils for planetary missions. Targeting bulky solids using SIBS has not been successful in the past, and therefore a series of optimizations of electrode positioning and electrode materials were performed in this work. The limit of detection (LOD) was enhanced up to four times compared to when LIBS was used, showing a change from 78 to 20 ppm from LIBS to SIBS. Because of the higher energy of plasma generated, the signal intensity by SIBS was higher than LIBS in three orders of magnitude with the same spectrometer setup. Changing the electrode material and locating the optimum position of the electrodes were considered for optimizing the current SIBS setup being tested for samples of planetary origin.

  • Metal three-dimensional (3D) printing is an important emerging processing method in powder metallurgy. There are many successful applications of additive manufacturing. However, processing parameters such as laser power and scan speed must be manually optimized despite the development of artificial intelligence. Automatic calibration using information in an additive manufacturing database is desirable. In this study, 15 commercial pure titanium samples are processed under different conditions, and the 3D pore structures are characterized by X-ray tomography. These samples are easily classified into three categories, unmelted, well melted, or overmelted, depending on the laser energy density. Using more than 10,000 projected images for each category, convolutional neural networks are applied, and almost perfect classification of these samples is obtained. This result demonstrates that machine learning methods based on X-ray tomography can be helpful to automatically identify more suitable processing parameters.

  • To implement carbon-neutrality in transportation sectors until 2050, hydrogen is considered a promising fuel for internal combustion engines because hydrogen does not contain carbon itself. Although hydrogen does not emit CO2 emission from its combustion process, the low energy density in a volume unit hinders the adoption of hydrogen. Therefore, the understanding of hydrogen jet behavior and measurement of equivalence ratio must be conducted to completely implement the high-pressure hydrogen direct injection. The main objective of this research is feasibility test of hydrogen local equivalence ratio measurement by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBs). To visualize the macroscopic structure of hydrogen jet, high-speed schlieren imaging was conducted. Moreover, LIBs has been adopted to validate the feasibility of hydrogen local equivalence ratio measurement. The hydrogen injection pressure was varied from 4 MPa to 8 MPa and injected in a constant volume chamber where the ambient pressure was 0.5 MPa. The increased injection pressure extends the vertical penetration of hydrogen jet. Due to the higher momentum supply when the injection pressure is high, the hydrogen has easily diffused in all directions. As the laser trigger timing has delayed, the low hydrogen atomic emission was detected due to the longer mixture formation time. Based on equivalence ratio measurement results, LIBs could be applied as a methodology for hydrogen local equivalence ratio measurement.

  • A laser beam propagating in free space can be negatively affected by atmospheric turbulence. To overcome this and correct the wavefront error of the laser beam itself, a deformable mirror (DM), which is a key component of adaptive optics, is widely used. In this paper, a novel precision assembling method is suggested for a multi-channel high-density DM. The material of the mirror sheet of the DM is silicon carbide (SiC), and the actuator is a stacked-type lead-magnesium-niobate (Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3; PMN). To connect the mirror sheet and each actuator, a flexure is inserted. The flexure can make the DM operate with full strokes without the failure of adhesive. A series of jigs were designed and applied in order to assemble these three parts (the mirror sheet, actuators, and flexures) precisely. After assembly, the performance of the DM was also checked.

  • Zinc oxide of hexagonal wurzite, is known as n-type semiconductor. It has a wide band gap energy of 3.37 eV and large exciton binding energy of 60 meV. It can be widely applied to gas sensors, laser diodes, dye-sensitized solar cells and degradation of dye waste. The use of microwave hydrothermal synthesis brings a rapid reaction rate, high yield, and energy saving. Amine additives control the different particle shapes because of the chelate effect and formation of hydroxide ion. In this study, zinc nitrate hexahydrate was used as zinc precursor. In addition, ethanolamine, ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, and hexamethylenetetramine are used as shape control agent. The pH value was controlled as 11 by NaOH. The shapes of zinc oxide are star-like, rod, flower-like, and circular cone. In order to analyze physical, chemical, and optical properties of ZnO with diverse amine additives, we used XRD, SEM, EDS, FT-IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and PL spectroscopy.

  • In this study, we studied the gamma-radiation effect of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) on the high temperature annealing condition after grating inscription using a KrF UV laser (248 nm). The FBGs were fabricated in a different annealing temperature using the same commercial Ge-doped silica core fiber (SMF-28e) and exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 31 kGy at the dose rate of 115 Gy/min. The high temperature annealing procedure for grating stabilization was applied to change the radiation sensitivity of the FBGs. According to the experimental data and analysis results, the gratings that were stabilized at different temperatures at 100, 150 and $200^{\circ}C$ have clearly shown that exposure to higher temperatures increases their radiation sensitivity. The radiation-induced Bragg wavelength shift (BWS) was shown a difference of up to about a factor of two depending on the annealing temperature conditions of the gratings.
