  • Up to ${\sim}520{\mu}J$ broadband mid-infrared (IR) supercontinuum (SC) generation in telecommunication multimode fiber (MMF) directly pumped by a $2.054{\mu}m$ nanosecond Q-switched Tm, $Ho:YVO_4$ laser is demonstrated. An average output power of 3.64 W is obtained in the band of ~1900 to ~2600 nm, and the corresponding optic-to-optic conversion efficiency is 67% by considering the coupling efficiency. The spectrum has extremely high flatness with negligible intensity variation (<2%) in the wavelength interval of ~2070 to ~2475 nm. The SC long-wavelength edge is limited by the silicon glass material loss, and by optimizing the MMF length, the SC spectrum could extend out to ${\sim}2.6{\mu}m$. The output SC pulse shapes are measured at different output powers, and no splits are found. The SC laser beam is nearly diffraction limited with an $M^2=1.15$ in $2.1{\mu}m$ measured by the traveling knife-edge method, and the laser beam spot is monitored by an infrared vidicon camera.

  • The effect of excimer laser annealing on the structural and dielectric behaviors of $PbZr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48}O_3$ (PZT) thin films has been investigated. The amorphous PZT thin films were prepared on Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrates by a sol-gel method. The PZT precursor was prepared from lead acetate, zirconium acetylacetonate, and titanium isopropoxide. The starting materials were dissolved in n-propanol and 1,3-propanediol. After, the amorphous PZT thin films were laser-annealed (using KrF excimer laser) as a function of the laser energy density and the number of laser pulse. Structural properties of PZT thin films are characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The dielectric characterization was done on a RT66A test system and a Agilent 4294A impedance analyzer. The PZT thin films show that excimer laser irradiation drastically improved the crystallization and dielectric properties of the PZT thin films, depending on the energy density and the pulse number.

  • We have produced nanophase iron clusters inside a gas cell by decomposing iron pentacarbonyls from the mixture of ~20 Torr Fe(CO)5/~3 Torr SF6 with a pulsed CO2 laser. The product displayed a black tint. Its composition was identified to be mostly iron from an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) atomic emission spectrum. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern indicates a body-centered cubic structure for the cluster. A transmission electron micrograph proves that their diameter ranges between 50 and 70 Å and their average diameter is 60 Å.

  • Laser plasma was generated by a 1 GW iodine photodissociation laser(λ=1.315${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, E-12.7J) whose output beam was focused on a molybdenum target surface. The experiment was conducted in the vacuum chamber under 10-5Torr and several tens of laser shooting were necessary for sufficient exposure to the PBS resist. A speciman was put directly on the resist and located at a distance of 3cm from the X-ray source. The replicas of a mesh, spider's tread, a red blood cell were obtained by PBS resist and were analyzed by Nomarski and SEM. Two main effects of limitation in resolution, source size and Fresnel diffraction, are mentioned and compared with the experimental result. In this experiment, a resolution better than 1000A could be obtained.

  • Nd : YAl3(BO3)4 (NYAB) single crystal has been developed for green laser. In this experiment, we found K2O/3MoO3/0.5B2O3 to be a suitable flux for NYAB crystal growth, and grew NYAB crystal by TSSG method using this flux. By varying the cooling rate of solution, seed orientation, and rotation speed, the effects of these growth conditions on the crystal quality and its morphology were examined. Suitable growth conditiions were a cooling rate slower than 2.4$^{\circ}C$/day, the rotation speed of 25~30 rpm, and the <001> seed orienttion. The phases of grown crystal, coexisting and volatile materials were investigated by X-ray diffraction. In addition, the possiblity of laser action was examined by UV analysis.

  • Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films were fabricated by the pulsed laser ablation deposition (PLAD) method onto Pt/Ti/SiO$_2$/Si substrates. Crystalline phases as well as preferred orientations in PZT films were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The well-crystallized perovskite phase and the (101) preferred orientation were obtained by two-step annealing at the conditions of $650^{\circ}C$, 1 hour. It was found that the temperature for the pulsed laser ablated PZT films annealed via a two-step annealing process can be reduced 20$0^{\circ}C$ compared to that of the conventional three-step annealing temperature profile for enhancing the transformation of the perovskite phase. The remanent polarization and the coercive field of this film were about 20 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 46 kV/cm, while the dielectric constant and loss values measured at 1 KHz were approximately 860 and 0.04, respectively. The interesting phenomena of this film, such as vertical shift in hysteresis curve, are also discussed.

  • ZnO thin films on (001) $Al_2O_3$ substrates have been deposited by pulsed laser deposition(PLD) technique using an Nd:YAG laser with a wavelength of 266 nm. The influence of the deposition parameters, such as oxygen gas flow, substrate temperature and laser energy density variation on the properties of the grown film, was studied. The experiments were performed for substrate temperatures in the range of $300\~450^{\circ}C$ and oxygen gas flow rate of $100\~900$ sccm. We investigated the structural and optical properties of ZnO thin films using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and photoluminescence(PL).

  • We have deposited hydrogen-free diamond-like carbon (DLC) films by pulsed laser deposition of graphite. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) can be utilized to generate films with desired properties quite different from those of the starting material. Since DLC films grown by PLD using turbo pump are perpared without hydrogen, they have a higher density and a higher index of refraction than the hydrogenated DLC films. In this study, effects of the substrate temperature and laser energy density on the properties of DLC films were systematically investigated. The structure and properties of the films have been studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy.

  • In this paper, we have made a proposal concerning the beam shaping mask(BSM) using random-array slits to control intensity distribution profile of laser beam and demonstrated its proprieties experimentally. When a lot of slits are set out irregularly, diffraction patterns of light does not appear but granularity patterns as a bundle of fibers appear. Intensity distribution profile is controlled by densities distribution of circular slits arrayed randomly because the number of slits and its area means amount of light energy through BSM. Namely as the number of slits in high intensity area is increased and that in low intensity area decreased, amount of light energy is same over all local parts. So gaussian intensity distribution could be changed to flat-top.
