  • We obtained the chemical shifts of amide protons (NHs) in helical peptides at various temperatures and trifluoroethanol (TFE) concentrations using 2-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. These NH chemical shifts and their temperature dependence exhibited characteristic periodicity of 3-4 residues per cycle along the helix, where downfield shifted NHs showed larger temperature dependence. In an attempt to understand these observations, we focused on hydrogen bonding changes in the peptides and examined the validity of two possible explanations: (1) changes in intermolecular hydrogen bonding caused by differential solvation of backbone carbonyl groups by TFE, and (2) changes in intramolecular hydrogen bonding due to disproportionate variations in the hydrogen bonding within the peptide helix. Interestingly, the slowly exchanging NHs, which were on the hydrophobic side of the helix, showed consistently larger temperature dependences. This could not be explained by the differential solvation assumption, because the slowly exchanging NHs would become more labile if the preceding carbonyl groups were preferentially solvated by TFE. We suggest that the disproportionate changes in intramolecular hydrogen bonding better explain both the temperature dependence and the exchange behavior observed in this study.

  • Product characteristic approach and hedonic method were explained and applied to demand behavior of housing for 360 households sampled from four districts of Seoul. Th major findings are: 1) Housing prices are determined by housing characteristics, i.e., basic structure, interior space, interior quality, and neighborhood quality. 2) as income increase , the demand for basic structure, interior space, interior of quality, and neighbor hood quality increases. As compared to the counties that have advanced housing financial systems, income elasticity form housing characteristics was low. 3) householder's educational level has insignificant effects on the demand for neighborhood quality. 4) the housing need of family is different to a family life cycle. In the first stage, the increase of income enhances the demand for basic structure. interior space, and interior quality, but inversed with neighborhood quality. In the second and third stages, the demand for basic structure, interior space, and interior quality increases as the income increases. 5) It is predicted that the larger the family size, the more housing space is required. But in the low-income group, an increase in family size results in a decrease in the demand for interior space because expenses for food and education are indispensable ones. In the middle -income group the demand for interior space, interior quality increases as the family size increases, In the high-income group, the larger the family size the more interior quality is demanded. As mentioned above, the demand for housing is derived form characteristics and the demand behavior far housing characteristics is varied with individual household's characteristics. Therefore, the fact that different housing needs according to various income groups should be considered in housing policy.

  • We measured and evaluated digital, pre-sampling and overall imaging properties (characteristic curves, Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), Wiener spectra (WS), Noise Equivalent Quanta (NEQ) and Detective Quantum Efficiency (DQE)) for the direct type and indirect type of Flat-Panel Detector (FPD). First, the digital and overall characteristic curves of the both types of FPD had more wide dynamic range than that of the S/F system. Second, the pre-sampling and overall MTF of the direct-type FPD were superior to those of the indirect-type FPD. Third, for identical exposures, the digital and overall WS of the direct-type FPD were similar or worse than those of the indirect-type FPD, and for larger exposure, the digital WS of the both types of FPD were smaller, but overall WS of the both types of FPD were larger. Fourth, the digital and overall NEQ and DQE of the direct-type FPD were worse than both NEQ and DQE of the indirect-type FPD at lower spatial frequencies, but were better at higher spatial frequencies.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that determine daily financial resources interchange between adult children and their parents. The data were drawn from KLIPS(Korea Labor and Income Panel Study), vol. 5(2002). From this dataset, one thousand eight hundred and thirty six adult children's households that had interchanged with or transferred financial resources to or from their parents were selected for this study. The results of this study were as follow: First, when compared to non-interchanging households, the households that interchanged financial resources with their parents tended to have a household head who is economically active, and had relatively plenty of financial resources. Second, the amount of the transaction was much larger for the adult children's households that were reciprocally interchanging financial resources with their parents than the households that transferred resources one-way, either taking from or giving to parents. Third, the main determinants of interchanges with their parents were the household head's demographic characteristic(sex, age, and education) and residential area what affected the amount of the exchanges, on the other hand, were the household head's demographic characteristic(sex, age, and education), household income, and assets.

  • As a new type of large-span space structure, suspendome is composited of the upper single-layer reticulated shell and the lower cable-strut system. It has better mechanical properties compared to single-layer reticulated shell, and the overall stiffness of suspendome structure increases greatly due to the prestress of cable. Consequently, it can cross a larger span reasonably, economically and grandly with high rigidity, good stability and simple construction. For a better assessment of the advantages of mechanical characteristic of suspendome quantitatively, the static behavior of Kiewitt6 suspendome was studied by using finite element method, and ADINA was the software application to implement the analysis. By studying a certain suspendome, the internal forces, deformation and support constrained forces of the structure were obtained in this paper. Furthermore, the influences of parameters including prestress, stay bar length, cross-sectional area and rise-to-span ratio were also discussed. The results show that the increase of prestress and vertical stay bar length can improve the stiffness of suspendome; Cross-sectional area has nearly no impact on the static behavior, and the rise-to-span ratio is the most sensitive parameter.

  • Recently, the regulations from the govemment and the concems of the people give rise to the interest in exhaust noise of passenger car as much as other vehicles. The exact analysis of various mufflers is needed to reduce the level of exhaust noise. In this paper, we propose a design to improve the mufflers capacity by reducing noise of exhaust system combining Taguchi method and fractional factorial design. In order to measure the performance of a muffler, the performance prediction software which is developed by the Dept. of Automotive Engineering at Hanyang University is used. From the current muffler system we select control factors such as lenght and radius of each component that are thought to be effective on capacity of muffler. Factors are arranged using L18, L27 table of orthogonal array and the fractional factorial design for analysis. We find some significant interaction effects using 1/3 fractional factorial design and accomplish the reduction of noise from the muffler.

  • This paper proposes an optimal design scheme to improve the muffler's capacity of noise reduction of the exhaust system by combining the Taguchi method and a fractional factorial design. As a measuring tool for the performance of a muffler, the performance prediction software which is developed by Oh, Lee and Lee (1996) is used. In the first stage of a design, the length and radius of each component of the current muffler system are selected as control factors. Then, the $L_{18}$ table of orthogonal arrays is adopted to extract the effective main factors. In the second stage, the fractional factorial design is adopted to take interactions into consideration, which the $L_{18}$ table of orthogonal arrays can not consider. For an optimal design, the $L_{27}$ table of orthogonal arrays with main and interaction effects is proposed and the noise factors such as temperature, background noise and humidity are analyzed for more efficient design simultaneously.

  • In this paper, we propose a new multiple access scheme for VSAT(Very Small Aperture Terminal) data communications. The proposed scheme has better performance in terms of delay throughput than Controlled Multiaccess Scheme which has excellent performance. The proposed scheme use the spare reservation method, adaptation method to offered load, and fixed bandwidth reservation method. In this paper, we analyze the performance using simple queueing model and present the simulation results. When network traffic is very low, the new scheme and the controlled multiaccess scheme have almost the same access delay characteristic. As the network load becomes higher, the new scheme's access delay gain becomes larger. Futhermore, even when the network traffic is very high it is possible to access satellite link within the delay similar to one round-trip delay. In addition to access delay performance enhancement, the new scheme has facility that supports fixed bandwidth reservation. So it shows more enhanced performance in the environment that stream traffic is dominant such as in VSAT communication environment.

  • Recently, the study on development of electrical and electronic device is done to get miniature, high degrees of integration and efficiency by using inorganic materials, the study of Langmuir-Boldgett(LB) method that uses organic materials because of the limitation for the ultra small size. In this paper, detected displacement current using PBLG and PBDG, deposition and observed the electrical characteristics to each 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 layers by LB method. Maximum value of change ratio of displacement current by the detected speed and temperature appeared almost lineally, could confirm that it are in comparison relation each other speed-temperature and displacement current. The structure of manufactured device is MIM. Also, we then examined of the MIM device by means of I-V. The I-V characteristic of the device is measured from 0 to +2[V]. The insulation property of a thin film is better as the distance between electrodes is larger.

  • We investigate the qualities of organic materials by which can manufacture organic thin films for solar cells and make thin films for insulation layers of an insulated cable. We give pressure stimulation into organic thin films and detect the induced displacement current. In processing of a device manufacture, We can see the process is good from the change of a surface pressure for organic thin films and transfer ratio of area per molecule. The structure of manufactured device is Au/organic thin films(polyimide)/Au and I-V characteristic of the device is measured from 0[V] to +5[V]. The maximum value of measured current is increased as the number of accumulated layers are decreased. The resistance for the number of accumulated layers, the energy density for an input voltage show desired results, and the insulation of a thin film is better as the interval between electrodes is larger.
