The Assessment of Foodservice Management Practices in Elementary School Foodservices (초등학교 급식소의 급식실태조사)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the foodservice management practices in elementary school in order to provide basic information for an efficient foodservice management. A self completed questionnaire survey of 912 schools in Korea was undertaken. Survey questionnaires consisted of 4 parts including general background, foodservice practices, purchasing practices and the status of cooking facilities and equipments. The main results of the empirical survey were as follows. 1. Elementary schools categorized by location were in urban areas (38.2%), provincial areas (48.0%) and in isolated areas (13.8%). 2. Conventional schools were 72.4% of the total followed by commissary management schools(23.5%) and commissary schools(4.1%). 3. The major factors considered for menu planning were nutritional adequacy(77.4%), preference of children(50.8%), food cost(46.0%), and cooking facilities & equipments in order. 4. The average cost of school lunch in provincial areas was 1494.8$\pm$224.9 won followed by in isolated areas (1337.0$\pm$793.3won) and in large cities (1271.4$\pm$308.1won). The average food cost of lunch was approximately 950won with no significant difference by location of schools. 5. 60% processed food were purchased through retailers in schools located in provincial and isolated areas, whereas 6.6% in schools located in urban areas. Food groups such as meat and its processed food, poultries, fish & shellfish, fruits and vegetables were more purchased through wholesalers in schools located in urban areas than in provincial and isolated areas. 6. Cereals including rice were regularily purchased once a month, whereas of other food items were found to be daily purchased in school located in urban and provincial areas.

Identifying Regional Characteristics Faxtors Affecting the Number of Tuberculosis Death - The Comparative Analysis between Urban and Rural areas - (결핵 사망자수에 영향을 미치는 지역특성 요인 규명 - 도시 및 비도시지역 비교분석 -)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of local factors affecting number of tuberculosis death by urban and rural areas. Method: The Partial Least Square(PLS) Regression analysis was used to solve the problem of multicollinearity and number of samples. Result: As a result of analysis, The number of tuberculosis deaths in urban and rural areas is about three times as large. As a result of analysis about Regional Characteristics Factor, In general, children, elderly people, and economically vulnerable populations are more likely to be exposed to tuberculosis. In differential results, it shows that environmental factors such as ultrafine dust and sulfur dioxide have a significant impact on the number of tuberculosis deaths in urban areas and social factors such as depression experience rate in rural areas. Conclusion: The Tuberculosis prevention and management policies that reflect the characteristics of urban and rural areas are needed in the future.

Classification of Metro Station Areas Using Multi-Source Big Data: Case Studies in Beijing

  • Large-capacity public transportation systems, represented by urban metro lines, are the key to alleviating the significant increase in urbanization and motorization in China. But to improve the agglomeration effect of metro stations in a more accurate and targeted way requires scientific evaluation and classification of the surrounding areas of metro stations. As spatial and functional design are the core factors for urban renewal design, this study took Beijing as an example, using multi-source data to evaluate the morphology and functional composition surrounding areas of metro stations, and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) matrix was used to classify and characterize each type of surrounding areas from morphological-functional dimensions. It shows a negative correlation of the mix-use index with the floor area ratio, and only about 20% of the areas achieve the ideal situation of high construction intensity with high mix-use diversity. Hoping to provide a reference for city managers and designers in dealing with the surrounding metro stations with different construction intensities in a more precise way.

Analysis of Changes of Commercial Areas in Yeongdo-gu Urban Regeneration Region (영도구 도시재생사업 대상지의 상권변화 분석)

  • In this study, changes in commercial areas in Yeongdo-gu urban regeneration region were analyzed in terms of regional revitalization. Urban decline can accelerate the decline of downtown commercial functions, and revitalization of stagnant areas can be evaluated as enhancing the vitality of commercial areas. To reach this objective, dynamic changes in the commercial area in urban regeneration region were confirmed through store density, industry diversity, and restaurant/cafe ratio. As a result of the study, it was found that the store density and industry diversity showed an increasing trend in Yeong-do urban regeneration region. Although it is difficult to find a substantial difference in the ratio of restaurant/cafe, it seems that Yeongseon 2-dong has undergone a relatively large commercial change. This research is significant in that it quantitatively evaluated and analyzed commercial changes in Yeongdo-gu urban regeneration region.

Spatial Distribution of Air Pollution in the Ulsan Metropolitan Region (울산지역 대기오염 공간분포)

  • The spatial air pollution distribution of the Ulsan metropolitan region (UMR) was analyzed using monitoring data and high-resolution numerical simulations. A three-year (2011~2014) analysis for the average concentrations from the 13 air quality monitoring sites in the UMR showed that $SO_2$ and $PM_{10}$ levels in industrial regions were much higher than those in other regions, whereas spatial differences of $NO_2$ and CO concentrations were not significant. In particular, elevated $O_3$ concentrations were clearly found at urban sites near petrochemical complex area. Results from high-resolution simulations by CMAQ model performed for four months of 2012 showed large spatial variations in grid-average pollutant concentrations between industrial areas and other areas in the UMR, which displayed significant changes with wind pattern by season. It was noted that the increases of $SO_2$ and $PM_{10}$ levels were limited in costal industrial areas or over the area nearby the sea in all seasons. Modeled $O_3$ concentrations were quite low in industrial areas and main urban roads with large $NO_x$ emissions. However, the model presented that all pollutant concentrations were significantly increased in the urban residential areas near the industrial complexes in summer season with increase of southerly wind.

  • Traffic congestion has become severe in large metropolitan areas by the travel behavior of employees as the low rate of vehicle occupancy and the high rate of Private auto using. In order to relieve traffic congestion, central and local government plan to implement diverse transportation demand management strategies. The governments want to know what employment types and locations in different metropolitan areas lead to the highest rate of vehicle occupancy and Private auto use. This study suggest that in large metropolitan areas, the employment locations of urban and suburban as well as the employment type of service show low vehicle occupancy. In medium metropolitan sizes. low vehicle occupancies are observed in service employment as well as in the employment locations of CBD. CBD fringe. In small metropolitan areas, a low rate of vehicle occupancy exists in service employment as well as in the employment locations of urban and suburban areas. A high rate of auto use shows not only in basic employment but also in the employment locations of CBD and CBD fringe.

Analysis of living population characteristics to measure urban vitality - Focusing on mobile big data - (도시활력 측정을 위한 생활인구 특성 분석 - 이동통신 빅데이터를 중심으로 -)

  • In an era of population decline, depopulated regions facing challenges in attracting inbound population migration must enhance urban vitality through the attraction of living populations. This study focuses on Busan, a city experiencing population decline, comparing the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of registered residents and living populations in various administrative districts (Eup-Myeon-Dong) using mobile communication big data. Administrative districts are typified based on population change patterns, and regional characteristics are analyzed using indicators related to urban decline and vitality. Spatiotemporal distribution analysis reveals generally similar density patterns between registered residents and living populations; however, a distinctive feature is observed in the city center areas where the density of registered residents is low, while the density of living populations is high. Divergent trends in spatial patterns of change between registered residents and living populations show clusters of registered population decline in low-density areas and clusters of living population decline in high-density areas. Areas adjacent to declining living populations exhibit large clusters of population changes, indicating a spillover effect from high-density to neighboring areas. Typification results reveal that, even in areas with a decline in registered residents, there is active population influx due to commuting or visiting. These areas sustain an increase in the number of businesses, confirming the presence of industrial and economic growth. However, approximately 47% of administrative districts in Busan are experiencing a decline in both registered residents and living populations, indicating ongoing regional decline. Urgent measures are needed for enhancing urban vitality. The study emphasizes the necessity of utilizing living population data as an urban planning indicator, considering the increasing limit distance of urban activities and growing interregional interaction due to advancements in transportation and communication.

A Study on the Trade Area Analysis of the Ilsan Subway Area for the Regeneration of Main Street (일산신도시의 중심상권 활성화를 위한 상권 분석에 관한 연구)

  • This article assumes that the first newtown has declined in Korea. Urban regeneration projects should be implemented for regeneration for CBD in Newtown as well as small local cities. The purpose of this article is to analyze the character of the subway area and to suggest the key issues for regeneartion in the subway area. Especially focussing on the local important commercial function in 5 subway areas. As a result of analyzing 5 subway areas according to basic statistical data, field interviews, and legal decline diagnostic index, all five commercial districts showed decline. In particular, the decline of Baekseok Station area appears to be serious, and there is a key factor that attracts the decline of the commercial area such as the long - term building or the closure rate of each commercial area. In addition, the vacancy rate is increasing due to large distribution facilities in new cities, the entry of new floating facilities on the outskirts, and unsold new stores, and the recession is accelerating. In this way, the signs of decline in the core of the new city are enriched, but the current Urban Regeneration Act is a legal system with a policy goal of regeneration of small and medium cities in the provinces as a system to promote the function of core bases rather than the overall redevelopment of new cities. Therefore, preemptive response is needed for the regeneration in those areas.

  • Being one of the municipality belonging to a large metropolitan city, there are areas with a special environment of rural characteristics that are different from general urban areas. Gijang-gun of Busan Metropolitan City is a good example. Although it maintains the highest level of the number of patrons per public library and the number of books per capita in Busan, and is also promoting various projects to strengthen the knowledge and cultural competitiveness, in Gijang-gun, a Complex Area where rural and urban areas coexist, most of the resources are concentrated in urban areas, and cultural facilities that provide public services are lacking in relatively few rural areas. In this regard, this research strives to enhance the vision and strategy of the Gijang-gun's public libraries, reflecting the characteristics and needs of the patrons as viewed through their urban-rural complex environment.

  • Recently, the frequency of heavy rainfall is increasing due to the effects of climate change, and heavy rainfall in urban areas has an unexpected and local characteristic. Floods caused by localized heavy rains in urban areas occur rapidly and frequently, so that life and property damage is also increasing. It is crucial how fast and precise observations can be made on successful flood management in urban areas. Local heavy rainfall is predominant in low-level storms, and the present large-scale radars are vulnerable to low-level rainfall detection and observations. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce a new urban flood forecasting system to minimize urban flood damage by upgrading the urban flood response system and improving observation and forecasting accuracy by quickly observing and predicting the local storm in urban areas. Currently, the WHAP (Water Hazard Information Platform) Project is promoting the goal of securing new concept water disaster response technology by linking high resolution hydrological information with rainfall prediction and urban flood model. In the WHAP Project, local rainfall detection and prediction, urban flood prediction and operation technology are being developed based on high-resolution small radar for observing the local rainfall. This study is expected to provide more accurate and detailed urban flood warning system by enabling high-resolution observation of urban areas.
