In VARTM process where a sacrificial medium is used to facilitate the resin flow, the velocity of resin varies drastically between the sacrificial medium and the fiber preform. Although the thickness-to-length ratio of a VARTM product is usually small, a 3-D analysis is prerequisite to analyze the lead-lag flow in the two different media. The problem associated with the full 3-D analysis is the CPU time. A full 3-D numerical mesh comprising large number of nodes requires an impractical CPU time on average computer platforms. In this study, a dual-scale analysis technique was developed. The flow analysis for the entire calculation domain was conducted in 2.5-D, and the 3-D analysis was performed for a small area of special concern. In some numerical examples, the local 3-D analysis could discover an eccentric flow pattern as well as the lead-lag flow that will inevitably be neglected in 2.5-D simulations. The global-local analysis technique practiced in this study can be used to analyze the intricate flow of resin through non-uniform media in affordable CPU times.
A constraint based on climatology is introduced to the cost function of the three-dimensional variational assimilation (3dVar) to correct the error of the zonal mean wind structure in the global data assimilation system at Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The revised cost function compels the analysis fit to the chosen climatology while keeping the balance between the variables in the course of analysis. The constraint varies selectively with the vertical level and the horizontal scale of the motion. The zonally averaged wind field from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis 40 (ERA-40) is used as a climatology field in the constraint. The constraint controls only the zonally averaged stratospheric long waves with total wave number less than 20 to fix the error of the large scale wind field in the stratosphere. The constrained 3dVar successfully suppresses the erroneous westerly in the stratospheric analysis promptly, and has been applied on the operational global 3dVar system at KMA.
Snowdrifts around buildings can cause serious problems when formed on undesirable places. The formation of snowdrifts is highly connected to the wind pattern around the building, and the wind pattern is again dependent on the building design. The shear stress on the surface and snowdrifting around different buildings are investigated through CFD analysis and compared to measurements. The computations of shear stress shows local minima in the same areas as snowdrifts are formed. The snowdrifting computations utilises a drift-flux model where a fluid with snow properties is allowed to drift through a fluid with air properties. An apparent dynamic viscosity of the snow/air mixture is defined and used as a threshold criterion for snowdrifting. The results from the snowdrifting computations show increased snow density where snowdrifts are expected, and are in agreement with previous large-scale snowdrift measurements. The results show that computational fluid dynamics can be a tool for planning building design in snowdrifting areas.

This study describes computational simulation results in 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional space concerning large scale gap test(LSGT) by using commercial hydrocode such as AUTODYN and LS-DYNA to analyze the detonation phenomenons of high explosives. To consider the possibilities of LSGT simulation, we used Lee - Tarver reaction rate model of PBX-9404 and Comp-B which were implemented AUTODYN's material library. Also we have tried the diverse numerical schemes such as Lagrangian, Eulerian and ALE(Arbitary Lagrangian Eulerian), SPH(Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) in LSGT simulations. After LSGT simulations, we compared the simulation results with published results to verify the LSGT simulations. According to the LSGT simulations, we have concluded as follows. In 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional space, Lagrangian solver provided the most reliable results based on analysis time and accuracy. When using two hydrocodes in 2-dimensional space, the simulation results are almost same except one explosive model. We have verified the modeling method and simulation results of the LSGT by using the commenrcial hydrocode in this study.
Three-dimensional structures of a vortical flow field and heat transfer characteristics in a partially blocked 7-pin fuel assembly mock-up of sodium-cooled fast reactor have been investigated through a numerical analysis using a commercial computational fluid dynamics code, ANSYS CFX. The simulation with the SST turbulence model agrees well with the experimental data of outlet and cladding wall temperatures. From the analysis on the limiting streamline at the wall, multi-scale vortexes developed in axial direction were found around the blockage. The vortex core has a high cladding wall temperature, and the attachment line has a low cladding wall temperature. The small-scale vortex structures significantly enhance the convective heat transfer because it increases the turbulent mixing and the turbulence kinetic energy. The large-scale vortex structures supply thermal energy near the heated cladding wall surface. It is expected that control of the vortex structures in the fuel assembly plays a significant role in the convective heat transfer enhancement. Furthermore, the blockage plate and grid spacer increase the pressure drop to about 36% compared to the bare case.

In this paper we applied a ray tracing method to estimate the scattering characteristics from large scale random rough surfaces. For the electromagnetic field evaluation, we have used the diffracted coefficient of the knife edge diffraction for the diffracted rays and Fresnel's reflection coefficients in connection with reflected rays. In addition, we examine to search for the traced rays using the imaging method which can be obtained all rays to arrived at receivers accurately and the diffracted field from rough surfaces is considered. Numerical examples have been carried out for the scattering characteristics of an ocean wave-like rough surface and delay spread characteristics of a building-like surface. In the present work we have demonstrated that the ray tracing method is effective to numerical analysis of a rough surface scattering.
A two dimensional shallow-water flow around a cavity driven by a sinusoidally oscillating external flow was studied numerically with an Ekman pumping model. A container model of "T" shape was constructed in the numerical computation for comparison with the experimental observation. The material transport in the external region is in good agreement with the experimentally recorded particle trajectories. It turns out that two large coherent vortices situated in the exterior region of the cavity are responsible for clockwise and counterclockwise drift motions, in large scale, of particles. The Ekman pumping model suggested in this study was found to be satisfactory.isfactory.
This study has conducted numerical analysis for lubrication system of transmission for commercial vehicle. The lubrication oil system in transmission can be applied to a large scale commercial vehicle which is over 15tons. The flow rate of lubricating oil has been obtained for each of branch port from the lubrication pipe. The results from numerical simulation are mainly suggested for the mass flow rate of lubrication oil in the rotating main shaft of transmission system. It has been found that the mass flow rate from oil hole increased with an rotating rate of main shaft. The flow characteristic from oil hole has been presented for the lubricating system in the manual transmission.

This paper presents the result of a comparison study to evaluate the performance of several semi-active control algorithms for use with large-scale MR damper applied to a building structure under seismic excitation using real-time hybrid test method. Recently, a variety of semi-active control algorithm studies are developed and generally evaluated the performance by using numerical analysis. In this paper real-time hybrid test method was applied to performance evaluating of semi-active control algorithms including a clipped optimal algorithm and the modulated homogeneous friction algorithm.
The present work presents the development of a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methodology viable for complex geometries and suitable for the simulation of rod-bundles. The use of LES and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) allows for a deeper analysis of the flow field and the use of stochastical tools in order to obtain additional insight into rod-bundle hydrodynamics. Moreover, traditional steady-state CFD simulations fail to accurately predict distributions of velocity and temperature in rod-bundles when the pitch (P) to diameter (D) ratio P/D is smaller than 1.1 for triangular lattices of cylindrical pins. This deficiency is considered to be due to the failure to predict large-scale coherent structures in the region of the gap. The main features of the code include multi-block capability and the use of the fractional step algorithm. As a Sub-Grid-Scale (SGS) model, a Dynamic Smagorinsky model has been used. The code has been tested on plane channel flow and the flow in annular ducts. The results are in excellent agreement with experiments and previous calculations.
