  • The effects of particle size on the surface properties of hydro-thermally synthesized barium titanate powders were investigated by means of particle size analysis, specific surface area, SEM, zeta potential and XPS. Particle sizes were measured by laser light scattering and are in the range of 150 to 1100nm. Zeta potential increased with increasing particle size and it was large minus value in the range of particle size from 500 to 900nm, which seems to be related with the dissolution of $Ba^{2+}$ ion in these particle sizes from the analysis of surface properties by XPS.

  • Numerical simulations are performed for the thermal fluid flow around a circular cylinder, and the particle trajectories are calculated to investigate the particle motions and deposition characteristics. We aim to understand the effects of three important parameters (particle Stokes number, temperature difference in the flow and on the cylinder surface, and thermal conductivity ratio between the fluid and the particles) on the deposition efficiency. The results show that the thermophorectic effect is insignificant for particles with large Stokes numbers, but it affects particles with small Stokes numbers. The deposition efficiency increases with the increase in temperature difference between the flow and the cylinder or the decrease in ratio of thermal conductivity of the particles to the fluid. When thermophoresis becomes significant, the particles are deposited even on the back side of the cylinder.

  • The finite element method (FEM), discrete element method (DEM), and Discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) are among the standard numerical techniques applied in computational geo-mechanics. However, in some cases there no possibility for modelling by traditional finite analytical techniques or other mesh-based techniques. The solution presented in the current study as a completely Lagrangian and mesh-free technique is smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). This method was basically applied for simulation of fluid flow by dividing the fluid into several particles. However, several researchers attempted to simulate soil-water interaction, landslides, and failure of soil by SPH method. In fact, this method is able to deal with behavior and interaction of different states of materials (liquid and solid) and multiphase soil models and their large deformations. Soil indicates different behaviors when interacting with water, structure, instrumentations, or different layers. Thus, study into these interactions using the mesh based grids has been facilitated by mesh-less SPH technique in this work. It has been revealed that the fast development, computational sophistication, and emerge of mesh-less particle modeling techniques offer solutions for problems which are not modeled by the traditional mesh-based techniques. Also it has been found that the smoothed particle hydrodynamic provides advanced techniques for simulation of soil materials as compared to the current traditional numerical methods. Besides, findings indicate that the advantages of applying this method are its high power, simplicity of concept, relative simplicity in combination of modern physics, and particularly its potential in study of large deformations and failures.

  • A meshless method which is the new computational method being developed recently, is applied to the simulation of large deformation problems. Among the many types of meshless methods, the Reproducing Kernel particle method (RKPM) is used and the nearly incompressible hyperelastic materials are employed in simulations. The meshless methods can avoid metsh distortions and mesh entanglements that may frequently happen when the mesh-based methods like finite element method are used for the simulations of largely deformed materials. A general features of meshless methods are reviewed and the formulation of RKPM is presented. Next, the performance of explicit RKPM is demonstrated by examples.

  • Advanced classification of Cs contaminated soil by using a magnetic force-assisted selection pipe was investigated. A selection pipe is a device that sort particles depending on their particle size, based on the relationship between buoyancy, drag, and gravity force acting on the particles. Radioactive cesium is concentrated in small-particle size soil components with a large specific surface area. Hence, the volume of the Cs contaminated soil can be reduced by recycling the large-particle size soil components with low radioactive concentration. One of the problems of the selection pipe was that the radioactive concentration of the stayed soil in the selection pipe exceeds 8000 Bq/kg, which is the standard value of recycling of Cs contaminated soil, due to low classification accuracy. In this study, magnetic fields were applied to the lab-scale selection pipe from upper side to improve the classification accuracy and to reduce the radioactive concentration of the stayed soil.

  • In this study, the mixing process of two-phase flow generated by two jets with height difference is analyzed. The primary jet is jetted on the condition of the state mixed pulverized solid particles with air. The height difference between the main jet and the secondary jet is changed into three kinds(0, 32.5, 47.5mm). The velocity vector field, concentration field and turbulent properties of solid particles are measured by using 3-Dimensional Particles Dynamics Analyzer. As the height difference of two jets through the two nozzles increases, the solid particle recirculation zone and the dense zone in the combustion chamber become large. The solid particle concentration at the center of the combustion chamber gets dense because the particle velocity remains slow due to the existence of the solid particle recirculation zone. The particle concentration in the combustion chamber can also be influenced by the hight difference of two jets.

  • Characteristics of spatial structure of particle clusters are investigated by using the flow field data obtained from three-dimensional numerical simulations. Eulerian/Lagrangian approach with two-way coupling is applied and individual particle-particle collisions are taken into account by using the hard-sphere model. More than 16 million particles are traced in the maximum case. The results show that the cluster is consisted from the multiple-spatial scale components while the low wave-number, hence the large-scale structure, is dominant. Three-dimensional structure reconstructed from the low-pass filtered data enables us to investigate the essential dynamics of particle clusters in detail.

  • Errors may occur due to analysis methods and water quality during the application of the on-line particle counter In water treatment process. Errors caused by analysis methods include particle destruction by shear force due to inflow speed and tube friction, as well as interruption by screening, bubbles and contaminants. Since errors happen frequently because of these factors, it is necessary to examine and evaluate such errors during the application of a particle counter. Errors can be large due to screening and bubbles. Measurement values are effective for water analysis after filtration process. However, because of screening, only measurement values for particles above $7{\mu}m$ are valid for water with a turbidity between 3-10NTU. As particle numbers around $10{\mu}m$ increase a lot after ozone treatment, sufficient pretreatment process is necessary. Physical conditions should keep stable for inflow to decrease errors caused by shear force.
