This paper presents the effects of the construction stages using time dependent material properties on the structural behaviour of concrete arch dams. For this purpose, a double curvature Type-5 arch dam suggested in "Arch Dams" symposium in England in 1968 is selected as a numerical example. Finite element models of Type-5 arch dam are modelled using SAP2000 program. Geometric nonlinearity is taken into consideration in the construction stage analysis using P-Delta plus large displacement criterion. In addition, the time dependent material strength variations and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Elasticity modulus, creep and shrinkage are computed for different stages of the construction process. In the construction stage analyses, a total of 64 construction stages are included. Each stage has generally $6000m^3$ concrete volume. Total duration is taken into account as 1280 days. Maximum total step and maximum iteration for each step are selected as 200 and 50, respectively. The structural behaviour of the arch dam at different construction stages has been examined. Two different finite element analyses cases are performed. In the first case, construction stages using time dependent material properties are considered. In the second case, only linear static analysis (not considered construction stages) is taken into account. Variation of the displacements and stresses are obtained from the both analyses. It is highlighted that construction stage analysis using time dependent material strength variations and geometric variations has an important effect on the structural behaviour of arch dams. The maximum longitudinal, transverse and vertical displacements obtained from construction stages and static analyses are 1.35 mm and 0 mm; -8.44 and 6.68 mm; -4.00 and -9.90 mm, respectively. In addition, vertical displacements increase from the base to crest of the dam for both analyses. The maximum S11, S22 and S33 stresses are obtained as 1.60MPa and 2.84MPa; 1.39MPa and 2.43MPa; 0.60MPa and 0.50MPa, respectively. The differences between maximum longitudinal, transverse, and vertical stresses obtained from construction stage and static analyses are 78%, 75%, and %17, respectively. On the other hand, there is averagely 12% difference between minimum stresses for all three directions.

The present study focuses on simulating river profile changes downstream of the Daecheong multipurpose dam by using the computer program HEC-6, which was developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The dam locates at the Keum river, a typical alluvial stream, whose bed material is composed mostly of fine and medium sands. The study reveals that after the completion of dam, a 15 km long reach downstream from the regulatory dam was severely degraded by about 2~3 m. No further severe degradation of this reach is expected, however, because the river-bed of this reach has been well armored since then with gravels and cobbles. Some places in the study reach were degraded locally by 2 m, due mainly to the large-scale gravel mining activities in that reach. On the other hand, a 20 km long reach in downstream study reach is aggraded more or less by 0.5~1 m. Calculation by the computer program HEC-6 is close to measurement for the study river reach. According to the results by HEC-6, the study river reach would remain generally stable in the future, except a few places in the mid-upstream where further river-bed degradation of 1~2 m would occur and a few places in the far downstream where local river-bed aggradations of about 0.5 m would occur.
In this study, we applied the Radar-AWS Rainrates (RAR), weather radar-based quantitative precipitation estimations (QPEs), to the Yongdam study watershed in order to perform the flood runoff simulation and calculate the inflow of the dam during flood events using hydrologic model. Since the Yongdam study watershed is a representative area of the mountainous terrain in South Korea and has a relatively large number of monitoring stations (water level/flow) and data compared to other dam watershed, an accurate analysis of the time and space variability of radar rainfall in the mountainous dam watershed can be examined in the flood modeling. HEC-HMS, which is a relatively simple model for adopting spatially distributed rainfall, was applied to the hydrological simulations using HEC-GeoHMS and ModClark method with a total of eight independent flood events that occurred during the last five years (2014 to 2018). In addition, two NCL and Python script programs are developed to process the radar-based precipitation data for the use of hydrological modeling. The results demonstrate that the RAR QPEs shows rather underestimate trends in larger values for validation against gauged observations (R2 0.86), but is an adequate input to apply flood runoff simulation efficiently for a dam watershed, showing relatively good model performance (ENS 0.86, R2 0.87, and PBIAS 7.49%) with less requirements for the calibration of transform and routing parameters than the spatially averaged model simulations in HEC-HMS.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of End-coating (CO) treatment and Vapor-dam (V) treatment on the air circulating oven drying characteristics of green stock (Paulownia tomentosa) for drum. The reduction of the weight of specimens was greatly displayed in order of control (C-NC) treatment, End-coating (C-CO) treatment, Vapor-dam (V-NC) treatment and Vapor-dam/End-coating (V-CO) treatment after the beginning of drying. The V-CO treated specimen showed smoother temperature gradient compared with the V-NC treated specimen throughout whole drying stage and there was little temperature gradient between the inner and outer part of the cylindrical stock. The C-CO treated specimen showed higher value of vapor pressure in both the inner and outer part of the cylindrical stock until the middle stage of drying, while after the middle stage of drying only the inner part of the cylindrical stock presented higher value compared with the C-NC treated specimen. The distribution of the absolute vapor pressure of the V-CO treated specimen was similar to that of the V-NC treated specimen during the initial stage of drying. However, the former showed a large distribution in order of the hollow, the outer part, the inner part of the cylindrical stock after the initial stage of drying, which was entirely different model of distribution from that of the V-NC treated specimen. Surface checks and ring failures were not observed for all of the specimens, while end checks were severely occurred for the C-NC treated specimen and the V-NC treated specimen.

This study aimed to investigate changes in benthic macroinvertebrate communities caused by erosion control dams using data obtained from three erosion control dams in Wonju, Gangwon Province, before and after the rainy season. Surveys were conducted four times from March to September 2019, and survey points were continuously selected during the installation of closed-type and open-type dams. A total of eight points from the upstream and downstream regions of each dam type were selected. The flow velocity of both the closed and open types increased, but the closed type exhibited a relatively higher flow velocity than the open type. Benthic macroinvertebrate species and individuals mostly decreased after the rainy season. A relatively large number of species and individuals were found upstream of the closed-type dam. An analysis of the ephemeroptera-plecoptera-trichoptera groups showed relatively reduced ephemeroptera in the closed-type dam and reduced trichoptera in the open-type dam. The periods before and after the rainy season could be divided based on the results of a similarity analysis. The open type showed relatively minimal changes before and after the rainy season.
Freshwater soundness can be broadly divided into the health of river ecosystems and social services for human water use, that is, water welfare. In this study the ecological soundness and water welfare index of rivers were calculated, and the freshwater comprehensive soundness was analyzed using the quadrant model for 14 basins in the Geum River basin. As for the ecological soundness of the river, the area upstream of the dam (based on Daecheong Dam) was evaluated as 'good', and the area downstream of the dam was evaluated as 'bad'. On the other hand as for water welfare, the area downstream of the dam with a large population was in a relatively 'good' condition, and the area upstream of the dam had a relatively 'poor' level of water welfare. In terms of freshwater comprehensive soundness, it was found that the basins of Mujunamdaecheon, Bocheongcheon and Daecheongdam showed good ecological soundness and water welfare, and the Geumganggongju, Nonsancheon and Geumganhagueon basins were all poor. The Gapcheon basin showed good results in 2014 due to continuous investment and systematic management. Therefore, it is necessary to find ways to utilize it for other watersheds through benchmarking.
In this study, quantitative sensitivity analysis on rockfill material influencing the dam crest settlement of CFRD (Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dam) subjected to earthquake loading was carried out. The purpose of this study is to indicate the most important input parameter from the results of sensitivity analysis, to show the quantitative variation of settlement at the crest of CFR type dam during earthquake with this input parameter, and to recommend the approximate estimation method of the settlement on the crest of CFRD subjected to earthquake loading. The statistic characteristics of rockfill parameters which were obtained from large triaxial tests were evaluated. The total 108 dynamic numerical analyses (2 input earthquake, 2 magnitudes for each earthquake, 27 rockfill material property combinations) on CFRD were conducted. The global sensitivity analysis was carried out using the results of numerical analysis. From the sensitivity analysis, It was found that the crest settlement of the CFRD subjected to earthquake was absolutely affected by the shear modulus of rockfill material irrespective of the input earthquakes and the magnitude of input acceleration. On the contrary, it was found that the effect of cohesion and friction angle of rockfill was negligible. From the results of sensitivity analysis and numerical analysis, the approximate estimation method of the settlement on the crest of CFRD subjected to earthquake loading was recommended on condition that the rockfill shear modulus and simple dam information was known.

The aim of this study was to assess the associations of some potential risk factors and occurrence of calf mortality in large-scale dairy farms. Njoro area of the Rift valley, Kenya was selected due to its potential of large-scale dairy farms, since the time of the Europeans settlers. The study was retrospective and focused on the calves dying from January 1996 through October 1998. Sample of studied population consisted of 105 calves extracted from the farm records. Data was collected using a questionnaire and were grouped into farm-level and animal-level factors. Calf mortality was 15.6% and important risk factors for calf mortality were sex of calf, season of birth, pneumonia disease, age of dam when calf was born and house type for calves. Female calve born during colder wet seasons and born to dams of 2-4.5 years of age were equally at higher risk. Calves raised in movable pens compared to those raised in permanent pens were at higher risk of mortality from pneumonia. Animal level factors were major causes of calf mortality in commercial farms used in this study and therefore details study is needed in these factors in controlling the calf mortality rates.
A simulation study was conducted to evaluate the effect of reciprocal cross on the detection and characterization of Mendelian QTL in $F_2$ QTL swine populations. Data were simulated under two different mating designs. In the one-way cross design, six $F_0$ grand sires of one breed and 30 $F_0$ grand dams of another breed generated 10 $F_1$ offspring per dam. Sixteen $F_1$ sires and 64 $F_1$ dams were randomly chosen to produce a total of 640 $F_2$ offspring. In the reciprocal design, three $F_0$ grand sires of A breed and 15 $F_0$ grand dams of B breed were mated to generate 10 $F_1$ offspring per dam. Eight $F_1$ sires and 32 $F_1$ dams were randomly chosen to produce 10 $F_2$ offspring per $F_1$ dam, for a total of 320 $F_2$ offspring. Another mating set comprised three $F_0$ grand sires of B breed and 15 $F_0$ grand dams of A breed to produce the same number of $F_1$ and $F_2$ offspring. A chromosome of 100 cM was simulated with large, medium or small QTL with fixed, similar, or different allele frequencies in parental breeds. Tests between Mendelian models allowed QTL to be characterized as fixed (LC QTL), or segregating at similar (HS QTL) or different (CB QTL) frequencies in parental breeds. When alternate breed alleles segregated in parental breeds, a greater proportion of QTL were classified as CB QTL and estimates of QTL effects for the CB QTL were more unbiased and precise in the reciprocal cross than in the one-way cross. This result suggests that reciprocal cross design allows better characterization of Mendelian QTL in terms of allele frequencies in parental breeds.

The study was carried out for the strength parameter of coarse grained Soil and slope stability analysis of earth dam. The test samples were taken fifteen kinds of soil from cohesive soil to coarse gravel. The degree of compaction of test samples for shear test and permeability test was chosen 95 percentage of maximum dry density. The results of this study are as follows ; 1.The maximum dry density(Yd) of coarse grained soil increase in proportion to coarse particles(P) with the relation of Y d= 1.609+0.0043P. 2.The coefficients of permeability(k) decrease by the increase of fine particles(n) with the relation of k=0.0426e-0 185n. 3.The cohesions of soil decrease by the increase of coarse particles, but internal friction angles are more increased in same condition. 4.The internal friction angles(${\Phi}$) decrease in inverse proportion to void ratio(e) with the relation of ${\Phi}$ = 73.068 - 69.268e. 5.The strength parameters( Ct ${\Phi}$t) by triaxial compression test are clearly smaller than that (Cd, ${\Phi}$d) by direct shear test in fine grained soil, but the differences between both parameters are a little in coarse grained soil. The relations of both parameters are as follows; Ct = O.544Cd + 0.04 ${\Phi}$t= 1.282${\Phi}$d-2306 6.In cohesive soil, the strength parameters( Cl ${\Phi}$l) by large size shear test apparatus are similar to the strength parameters(Cs , ${\Phi}$s) by small size shear test appratus, but Cs and ${\Phi}$s values are larger than Cl and ${\Phi}$l values from 10 percentage to 20 percentage in coarse grained soil. 7.The fine grained soil is inappropriate to high dam more than 20 meters and it must be taken coarse grained soil with high internal friction angle for high dam.
