Because general laboratory tests for sand compaction pile method including unit-cell test device have fixed outside diameter, as area replacement ratio increase, diameter of sand pile increase. These condition can bring about overestimation of stiffness of composite ground. In addition, existing large soil box which consist of bellows type loading plate can occur serious mistake in checking the amount of drained water because there are additional drainage along the inside wall in device. Overcoming these shortcoming, this paper developed modified large scale soil box consist of piston type load plate. In this study, using this device, series of modified large scale soil box tests were performed, and investigated the settlement and stress transportation characteristics with area replacement ratio in sand compaction pile method.

In this study, it was to investigate the possibility to use the converts slag, by product in producing steel as a substitute material with sand that is used fur a civil construction materials, in developing techniques to use converts slag to improve soft clay ground. To do this, it was investigated the physical and mechanical properties of the converts slag as a civil construction material. For this, cylindrical cell consolidation with a single vertical drains and large scale soil box test were performed. Through large scale soil box test, the applicability of the converts slag to the present vertical drain techniques which is dependent on sand and plastic drains was studied. As a result of that, it was found that the shape of inserted drains was maintained after completing a consolidation process of a soft clay with slag drains. In addition, we could find that the slag drains showed the similar results with sand drains in soft clay by analyzing the effect of acceleration of consolidation.

Although mud shrimp (Upogebia Major) provides benefits on the tidal flat ecosystem, it is causing the mass mortality of Manila clam (Tapes philippinarum) and large economic loss to the aquaculture farmer due to spreading in the entire coastal clam farm area of the West Sea of Korea. In this study, a mud shrimp blocking box for cultivating clam was tested to prevent the mud shrimp from invading the habitat of the clam. To determine the effect of the blocking box, the growth characteristics of the clams under various culture conditions were investigated. The shell length, total weight, condition index, the presence of mud shrimp in the box, and the soil decay in the box were examined according to whether the clams were raised in the box or in natural state, whether the box is covered with a net or not and the gap size of the box. As a result, no significant differences in shell length, total weight, and condition index were found between the clam grown in the box and the natural state (P>0.05) without any evidence of invading of mud shrimp to the box. In addition, the soil inside the box was in good condition, not decayed. Therefore, using the mud shrimp blocking box, mud shrimp can be prevented from propagating to the habitat of the clam, thereby contributing to the normal production of the clam and thus to restoring the clam farming.
This paper presents an investigation on bearing capacity, load-settlement behavior and safety factor of rock-soil slopes reinforced using geogrid-box method (GBM). To this end, small-scale laboratory studies were carried out to study the load-settlement response of a circular footing resting on unreinforced and reinforced rock-soil slopes. Several parameters including unit weight of rock-soil materials (loose- and dense-packing modes), slope height, location of footing relative to the slope crest, and geogrid tensile strength were studied. A series of finite element analysis were conducted using ABAQUS software to predict the bearing capacity behavior of slopes. Limit equilibrium and finite element analysis were also performed using commercially available software SLIDE and ABAQUS, respectively to calculate the safety factor. It was found that stabilization of rock-soil slopes using GBM significantly improves the bearing capacity and settlement behavior of slopes. It was established that, the displacement contours in the dense-packing mode distribute in a broader and deeper area as compared with the loose-packing mode, which results in higher ultimate bearing load. Moreover, it was found that in the loose-packing mode an increase in the vertical pressure load is accompanied with an increase in the soil settlement, while in the dense-packing mode the load-settlement curves show a pronounced peak. Comparison of bearing capacity ratios for the dense- and loose-packing modes demonstrated that the maximum benefit of GBM is achieved for rock-soil slopes in loose-packing mode. It was also found that by increasing the slope height, both the initial stiffness and the bearing load decreases. The results indicated a significant increase in the ultimate bearing load as the distance of the footing to the slope crest increases. For all the cases, a good agreement between the laboratory and numerical results was observed.
Cast in situ and grouted concrete helical piles with 150-200 mm diameter half cylindrical ribs have become an economical and effective choice in Shanghai, China for uplift piles in deep soft soils. Though this type of pile has been successful used in practice, the reinforcing mechanism and the contribution of the ribs to the total resistance is not clear, and there is no clear guideline for the design of such piles. To study the inclusion of ribs to the contribution of shear resistance, the shear behaviour between silty sand and concrete slabs with parallel ribs at different spacing and angles were tested in a large direct shear box ($600mm{\times}400mm{\times}200mm$). The front panels of the shear box are detachable to observe the soil deformation after the test. The tests were modelled with three-dimensional finite element method in ABAQUS. It was found that, passive zones can be developed ahead of the ribs to form undulated failure surfaces. The shear resistance and failure mode are affected by the ratio of rib spacing to rib diameter. Based on the shape and continuity of the failure zones at the interface, the failure modes at the interface can be classified as "punching", "local" or "general" shear failure respectively. With the inclusion of the ribs, the pull out resistance can increase up to 17%. The optimum rib spacing to rib diameter ratio was found to be around 7 based on the observed experimental results and the numerical modelling.
This study examined root growth and distribution under the direct seeding of rice cultivars developed in Korea, Japan, and the U.S. Cultivars from the U.S., especially 'M202' and 'Caloro', had a high ratio of the dry matter partitioning for root and top plant components. Caloro had high root and top growth. 'Koshihikari' from Japan showed the lowest ratio of R/T (root/total dry matter) due to the small amount of root and top plant growth. Most Japanese cultivars except transplanted 'Hatsuboshi' showed low ratio of R/T. Patterns of root distribution for each soil block were recorded by the root box-pin board method. Roots of all cultivars were distributed in blocks A, C, and E in the middle of box, i.e., just below the plant base. Roots of 'Dongjin', M202, and Caloro were distributed deeper than the others. Roots of transplanted Hatsuboshi developed much better than direct seeded Hatsuboshi. Total root weight density was highest in Caloro followed by Dongjin, 'Gancheok', 'Calrose', and the others. The root density of Caloro was twice as much as those of the others except Dongjin. According to cumulative percentages of root distribution on each soil layer, roots of most cultivars were distributed below 20cm. The U.S. cultivars showed vertically well developed root systems as compared to others. A large amount of roots were distributed in the top 15cm of soil layer for Hatsuboshi and Koshinikari, and their root systems appeared to be shallow. In contrast, the rates of root distribution in the top 10cm of soil layer were low for Dongjin, Calrose, and Caloro. These cultivars had relatively deep root systems.

In this study, the effect of void formation resulting from gas hydrate dissociation or loss of some particles within soil structure on the strength of soil is examined. Beag-ma river sands with uniform gradation were used to simulate a gas hydrate bearing or washable soil structure. Empty capsules for medicine are used to mimic large voids, which are bigger than soil particle. Beag-ma river sand was miced with 8% cement ratio and 14% water content and compacted into a shear box. The number and direction embedded into a specimen. After 4 hours curing, a series of direct shear test is performed on the capsule embedded cemented sands. Shear strength of cemented sands with capsules depends on the volume and direction. The volume and direction formed by voids are most important factors in strength. A shear strength of a specimen with large voids decreases up to 39% of a specimen without void. The results of this study can be used to predict the strength degradation of gas hydrate bearing sediments after dissociation and loss of fine particles within soil structure.
In this study, the deposition of dredged soils from domestic rivers is simulated in the laboratory using a small soil box. In the tests, small sand with 0.002-0.85 mm, large sand with 0.85-2 mm, and gravel 4.75-5.6 mm are air or water-pluviated into the box. Such various deposition processes are simulated and their dry densities are measured. While dredging or piling such soils, their volume may change. The loss of such soils is calculated by a soil conversion factor C. The C value was determined as 0.91 for small sand, 0.96 for large sand, and 0.91 for gravel. The drainage through soil piles may occur and result in effective stress increase. This may cause the volume change of soils and in order to consider such effect it is necessary to recalculate C values. As a result, dry density increased by 5-12% when the drainage effect is considered. When the drainage effect is considered, the value of soil conversion factor C was 0.81 for small sand, 0.92 for large sand, and 0.82 for gravel. Eventually, the C value decreased up to 4-12%.

It was investigated whether the waste polyethylene chips can be recycled as construction materials in geotechnical engineering field. The standard Proctor test, the hydraulic conductivity test, the large box direct shear test, the thermal conductivity test, the frost heaving test and the time domain reflectometry test were performed on weathered granite soil mixed with variable amount of the waste polyethylene chips. The experimental results showed that the hydraulic conductivity and the shear strength of weathered granite soil increase with increasing the amount of the waste polyethylene chips. On the other hand, the thermal conductivity, the amount of frost heaving and the unfrozen water contents of weathered granite soil decrease with increasing the amount of the waste polyethylene chips.

There are lots of tunnel intervals in the KTX II stage construction line for the linearity of railway line passing mountain region. In order to use the rocks from tunnel excavations, railway subgrades are constructed with crushed rock-soil mixtures. In this study, plain strain test using large scale box was conducted in order to analyze the characteristics of deformation behavior of railway subgrades composed of crushed rock-soil mixtures. The effects of variation of degree of saturation, stress level of applied loadings, and number of loading cycles on the resilient and permanent deformation behavior were analyzed. The results show that degree of saturation have a great effect on the deformation behavior of crushed rock-soil mixtures. The axial strain ranges between $0.1{\sim}0.8%$ with variation of degree of saturation, in assumption that deviatoric stress applied on the subgrade by high-speed train load is 55kPa.
