  • To overcome the weakness of spread foundation in large space structure, the research of precast pile for replace spread foundation have been conducted. The new type of joint between PHC pile and steel column is named HAT Joint(Hollow hAlf-sphere cast-sTeel Joint). It connected PHC Pile by bolt that verification of bolt connection should be accomplished. In this paper, pull-out test and flexural performance for HAT Joint to verifying the bolt connection is explained. As a result, the pull-out and flexural capacities of bolt were checked to use in real structure. Furthermore, the equation of pull-out strength was proposed.

  • For long piles driven in deep clay deposits, it is difficult to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity due to large resistance induced by long embedded depth, and also the load transfer curve due to large residual load induced by negative skin friction, even with the performance of pile load tests. In this research, a hi-directional load test on a PHC pile driven in deep soft deposit was performed in order to evaluate the tip and shaft resistances separately, which are feasible to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of the pile. Residual load of the pile was determined by continuous monitoring of pile strains after the pile installation. The true resistance and true load-movement curve of the pile were properly estimated by taking account of the residual load. A model far behavior of the shaft resistance vs. movement was also proposed, which includes the effects of residual load based on the experiment. Consequently, it was proved that the residual load should be taken into consideration for correctly analyzing load test results of piles in deep clay deposits.

  • Composite pile, which is composed of the steel pipe pile in which the large horizontal force acts and the PHC pile in which the small horizontal force acts by a special connecting devices, is being commercialized as a base material for civil engineering structures. The core of such a composite pile can be said to be a design criterion for estimating the joint position and stability of the connection device between steel pipe pile and PHC pile. In Korea, there is no precise specification for the location of composite pile joints. In the LH Design Department (Korea Land & Housing Corporation, 2009), "Application of composite pile design and review of design book marking" was made with reference to Road Design Practice Volume 3 (Korea Expressway Corporation, 2001). this is used as a basis of the design of the composite pile. It can not be regarded as a section change of the composite pile, so it has a limitation in application. Therefore, In this study, we propose a design criterion for the location of the section of the composite pile (joint of steel pipe pile and PHC pile) and evaluate the stability and economical efficiency of it by using experimental method and analytical method. Analysis of composite pile design data installed in 79 domestic bridges abutment showed that the stresses, bending moments, and displacements acting on the pile body and connection of the pile were analyzed. Through the redesign process, it was confirmed that the stresses generated in the connecting device occur within the allowable stress values of the connecting device and the PHC pile. In conclusion, the design proposal of composite pile joint location through empirical case study in this study is an improved design method considering both stability and economical efficiency in designing composite pile.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide an experimental and analytical study on the reinforced large diameter pretensioned high strength concrete (R-LDPHC) pile. R-LDPHC pile was reinforced with infilled concrete, longitudinal, and transverse rebar to increase the flexural and shear strength of conventional large diameter PHC (LDPHC) pile without changing dimension of the pile. To evaluate the shear and flexural strength enhancement effects of R-LDPHC piles compared with conventional LDPHC pile, a two-point loading tests were conducted under simple supported conditions. Nonlinear analysis on the basis of the conventional layered sectional approach was also performed to evaluate effects of infilled concrete and longitudinal rebar on the flexural strength of conventional LDPHC pile. Moreover, ultimate strength design method was adopted to estimate the effect of transverse rebar and infilled concrete on the shear strength of a pile. The analytical results were compared with the results of the bending and shear test. Test results showed that the flexural strength and shear strength of R-LDPHC pile were increased by 2.3 times and 3.3 times compared to those of the conventional LDPHC pile, respectively. From the analytical study, it was found that the flexural strength and shear strength of R-LDPHC pile can be predicted by the analytical method by considering rebar and infilled concrete effects, and the average difference of flexural strength between experimental results and calculated result was 10.5% at the ultimate state.

  • LH applies a uniformly standardized PHC Pile to 15~25 stories of Shear-wall type Apartment Building. Recently it is predicted that LH will construct over 30~40 story Apartment Building to keep varied project condition and faces urgent needs to save construction cost for improving its competitiveness. Therefore, structural analysis and design on the upper part and foundation of apartment building were carried out in this study by subdividing story of apartment building, e.g. 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 stories. Reflecting the result of basement analysis and design, the economic evaluations are performed and the optimum diameters of PHC piles are suggested. The result of this paper is considered to be applied usefully for foundation design of LH apartment housing, and the suggested PHC Piles can be used effectively by increasing efficiency and saving the construction cost of foundation.

  • A pile is a type of medium for constructing superstructures in weak geotechnical conditions. A pretensioned spun high-strength concrete (PHC) pile is composed of high-strength concrete with a specified strength greater than 80 MPa. Therefore, it has advantages in resistance to axial and bending moments and quality control and management since it is manufactured in a factory. However, the skin friction of a pile, which accounts for a large portion of the pile bearing capacity, is only approximated using empirical equations or standard penetration test (SPT) N-values. Particularly, there are some poor research results on the pile-soil interface under the seismic loads in Korea. Additionally, some studies do not consider geoenvironmental elements, such as groundwater pH values. This study performs sets of cyclic simple shear tests using submerged concrete specimens for 1 month to consider pH values of groundwater and clay specimens composed of kaolinite to generate a pile-soil interface. 0.2 and 0.4 MPa of normal stress conditions are considered in the case of pH values. The disturbed state concept is employed to express the dynamic behavior of the interface, and the disturbed function parameters are newly suggested. Consequently, the largest disturbance increase under basic conditions is observed, and an early approach to the failure under low normal stress conditions is presented. The disturbance function parameters are also suggested to express this disposition quantitatively.

  • For the construction of high-rise structures and the optimized foundation design, the use of the large-diameter PHC pile has increased. Especially, the use of the 600 mm diameter PHC pile has significantly increased. In this study, for the evaluation of the suitability of the current design practice, the 46 dynamic pile load tests, which were carried out in the 600 mm diameter preboring PHC pile, are analyzed. The end bearing capacity is obtained from the end of initial driving test and the shaft capacity is estimated from the restrike test. The allowable capacities estimated by the dynamic load test are compared with those based on the current design practice. The analyses show that the allowable end bearing capacity evaluated by the dynamic pile load test is greater than the design practice in most piles. The allowable shaft capacity, however, is smaller than the design practice in many piles. The higher end bearing capacity and the smaller shaft capacity may result from the improvement of the drilling equipment and the increase in the penetration depth. Thus, the portion of the end bearing capacity in the total capacity increases.

  • As increasing demand on marine structures and skyscrapers, a deep shaft pile foundation is more to be used for the place having weak ground strength. Because heavy horizontal force is generally applied on upper part of pile foundation used in civil or architectural construction, steel pile is largely used with its high resistance to shear force and bending moment, and its capability to carry heavy loads. The steel pile has advantage in good constructibility, high applicability on site and easy handing, but has disadvantage in cost, more expensive than other material pile. This study is about the Composite pile that makes economical construction possible by reducing material cost of pile; using steel and PHC pile simultaneously while preserving the advantage of steel pile that large resistance to horizontal force and bending moment. A Non Welding connection method is applied to this composite pile and this method could reduce the cost and period of construction and could increase the quality of construction by solving the problem of current welding method and by improving the workability of pile connection. In this study, characteristics of driveability of non welding composite pile is analyzed prior to main project while the purpose of main project is proving the applicability of Non Welding Composite Pile by conducting various kind of loading test to analyze the characteristics behaviour of Non Welding Composit Pile and by verifying stability of non welding connection pile.
