The nonlinear formulation using the principle of virtual work-energy for free vibration of a large-sag extensible catenary riser in two dimensions is presented in this paper. A support at one end is hinged and the other is a free-sliding roller in the horizontal direction. The catenary riser has a large-sag configuration in the static equilibrium state and is assumed to displace with large amplitude to the motion state. The total virtual work of the catenary riser system involves the virtual strain energy due to bending, the virtual strain energy due to axial deformation, the virtual work done by the effective weight, and the inertia forces. The nonlinear equations of motion for two-dimensional free vibration in the Cartesian coordinate system is developed based on the difference between the Euler's equations in the static state and the displaced state. The linear and nonlinear stiffness matrices of the catenary riser are obtained and the eigenvalue problem is solved using the Galerkin finite element procedure. The natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained. The results are validated with regard to the reference research addressing the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed nonlinear formulation. The numerical results for free vibration and the effect of the nonlinear behavior for catenary riser are presented.
In large-scale problem, a huge size of computational resources is needed for a reliable solution which represents the detailed description of dynamic behavior. Recently, eigenvalue reduction schemes have been considered as important technique to resolve computational resource problems. In addition, the efforts to advance an efficiency of reduction scheme leads to the development of the multi-level system condensation (MLSC) which is initially based on the two-level condensation scheme (TLCS). This scheme was proposed for approximating the lower eigenmodes which represent the global behavior of the structures through the element-level energy estimation. The MLSC combines the multi-level sub-structuring scheme with the previous TLCS for enhancement of efficiency which is related to computer memory and computing time. The present study focuses on the implementation of the MLSC on the direct time response analysis and the frequency response analysis of structural dynamic problems. For the transient time response analysis, the MLSC is combined with the Newmark's time integration scheme. Numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.
Present paper deals with the large amplitude flexural vibration of carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) plates. Distribution of CNTs as reinforcements may be uniform or functionally graded (FG). The equivalent material properties of the composite media are obtained according to a refined rule of mixtures which contains efficiency parameters. To account for the large deformations, von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ type of geometrical nonlinearity is included into the formulation. The matrix representation of the governing equations is obtained according to the Ritz method where the basic shape functions are written in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials. Time dependency of the problem is eliminated by means of the Galerkin method and the resulting nonlinear eigenvalue problem is solved employing a direct displacement control approach. Results are obtained for completely clamped and completely simply supported plates. Results are first validated for the especial cases of FG-CNTRC and cross-ply laminated plates. Afterwards, parametric studies are given for FG-CNTRC plates with different boundary conditions. It is shown that, nonlinear frequencies are highly dependent to the volume fraction and dispersion profiles of CNTs. Furthermore, mode redistribution is observed in both simply supported and clamped FG-CNTRC plates.

Component Mode Synthesis (CMS) is a dynamic substructuring technique to get an approximate eigensolutions of large degree-of-freedom structures divisible into several components. But, In practice. most of large structures are modeled by different teams of engineers. and their respective finite element models often require different mesh resolutions. As a result, the finite element substructure models can be non-conforming and/or incompatible. In this work, A hybrid version of component mode synthesis using a localized lagrange multiplier to treat the non-conforming mesh problem was derived. Evolution Strategies (ESs) is a stochastic numerical optimization technique and has shown a robust performance for solving deterministic problems. An ESs conducts its search by processing a population of solutions for an optimization problem based on principles from natural evolution. An optimization example for raising the first natural frequency of a plate structure using beam stiffeners was presented using hybrid component mode synthesis and robust evolution strategies (RES) optimization technique. In the example. the design variables are the positions and lengths of beam stiffeners.

A numerically stable technique to remove the limitation in choosing a shift in the subspace iteration method with shift is presented. A major difficulty of the subspace iteration method with shift is that because of singularity problem, a shift close to an eigenvalue can not be used, resulting in slower convergence. This study solves the above singularity problem using side conditions without sacrifice of convergence. The method is always nonsingular even if a shift is an eigenvalue itself. This is one of the significant characteristics of the proposed method. The nonsingularity is proved analytically. The convergence of the proposed method is at least equal to that of the subspace iteration method with shift, and the operation counts of above two methods are almost the same when a large number of eigenpairs are required. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, two numerical examples are considered.

In order to effectively predict thermo-acoustic instability within real combustors of rocket engines and gas turbines, in the present study, the Helmholtz equation in conjunction with the time lag hypothesis is discretized by the finite element method on three-dimensional hybrid unstructured mesh. Numerical nonlinearity caused by the combustion response term is linearized by an iterative method, and the large-scale eigenvalue problem is solved by the Arnoldi method available in the ARPACK. As a consequence, the final solution of complex valued eigenfrequency and acoustic pressure field can be interpreted as resonant frequency, growth rate, and modal shape for acoustic modes of interest. The predictive capabilities of the present method have been validated against two academic problems with complex impedance boundary and premixed flame, as well as an ambient acoustic test for liquid rocket combustion chamber with/without baffle.

An efficient and numerically stable eigensolution method for structures with multiple natural frequencies is presented. The proposed method is developed by improving the well-known subspace iteration method with shift. A major difficulty of the subspace iteration method with shift is that because of singularity problem, a shift close to an eigenvalue can not be used, resulting in slower convergence. In this paper, the above singularity problem has been solved by introducing side conditions without sacrifice of convergence. The proposed method is always nonsingular even if a shift is on a distinct eigenvalue or multiple ones.
Recently, CG (Conjugate Gradient) scheme for the optimization of the Rayleigh quotient has been proven a very attractive and promising technique for interior eigenvalues for the following eigenvalue problem, Ax=λx (1) The given matrix A is assummed to be large and sparse, and symmetric. Also, the method is very amenable to parallel computations. A proper choice of the preconditioner significantly improves the convergence of the CG scheme. We compare the parallel preconditioners for the computation of the interior eigenvalues of a symmetric matrix by CG-type method. The considered preconditioners are Point-SSOR, ILU (0) in the multi-coloring order, and Multi-Color Block SSOR (Symmetric Succesive OverRelaxation). We conducted our experiments on the CRAYT3E with 128 nodes. The MPI (Message Passing Interface) library was adopted for the interprocessor communications. The test matrices are up to $512{\times}512$ in dimensions and were created from the discretizations of the elliptic PDE. All things considered the MC-BSSOR seems to be most robust preconditioner.
The main goal of this study is to investigate the free vibration analysis of a large sag catenary with application to the jumper in hybrid riser system. The equation of motion is derived by using the variational method based on the virtual work principle. The finite element method is applied to evaluate the numerical solutions. The large sag catenary is utilized as an initial configuration for vibration analysis. The nonlinearity due to the large sag curvature of static configuration is taken into account in the element stiffness matrix. The natural frequencies of large sag catenary and their corresponding mode shapes are determined by solving the eigenvalue problem. The numerical examples of a large sag catenary jumpers are presented. The influences of bending rigidity and large sag shape on the free vibration behaviors of the catenary jumper are provided. The results indicate that the increase in sag reduces the jumper natural frequencies. The corresponding mode shapes of the jumper with large sag catenary shape are comprised of normal and tangential displacements. The large sag curvature including in the element stiffness matrix increases the natural frequency especially for a case of very large sag shape. Mostly, the mode shapes of jumper are dominated by the normal displacement, however, the tangential displacement significantly occurs around the lowest point of sag. The increase in degree of inclination of the catenary tends to increase the natural frequencies.
