Today, vast attention has been paid to periodic arrays of nanostructures due to their potential for applications such as memory with huge storage density. Such application requires large-scale fabrication of well ordered nano-sized structures. One of the most widely used methods for the ordered nanostructures is lithography. This top-down process, however, has the limit to reduce size. Here the promising alternative is the self-organization of ordered nano-sized structures such as large scale 2d carbon-induced reconstructions on W(110). In the present study, we report on the first well-resolved atomic resolution STM studies of the well-known R($15{\times}3$) and R($15{\times}12$) carbon induced reconstruction of the W(110). From the atomic image of R($15{\times}3$) for different values of tunneling gap resistance, we can tell there are no missing atoms in unit cells of R($15{\times}3$) and some atomic displacements are substantial from the clean W(110), even though not all the imaged position of atoms correspond to tungsten, but may include those of carbon. We are considering two cases; First case is related to lattice deformation, or top layer of W(110) is deformed in the process of relief of strain caused by random inserting of carbon atoms possibly in the interstitial position. In the second case, R($15{\times}3$) unit cell results from a coincidence lattice between clean W(110) substrate and tungsten carbide overlayer which has rectangular atomic arrangement and giving R($15{\times}3$) coincidence lattice. beta-W2C showing rectangular unit cell should be a candidate. Further, we report on new reconstructions. Unlike the well-known R($15{\times}12$) consisting of two parts, two inner structures between two "Backbone" structures. The new reconstruction, which we found for the first time, contains more parts between the "Backbone"s. Sometimes we can observe the reconstruction consists of only inner parts without "Backbone" parts. Thus, the observed reconstruction can be built by constructing of two types of "Lego"-like block. Moreover, the rectangle shape of "Backbone" transform to parallelogram-like shape over time, the so-called wavy-R($15{\times}12$). Adsorption of hydrogen can be the reason for this transformation.

IPM bridge is an integral bridge that can be applied from span 30.0m up to 120.0m, the shape conditions of IPM bridge is also applicable to the rahmen bridge. In this study, to perform the structural analysis of Rahmen bridge and IPM Bridge, the researchers compared the distribution types such as load, moment, and displacement of those bridges. Structural analysis was carried out on four span models ranging from single span bridges to four spans of 120.0 m, based on span length of 30.0 m. Structural analysis was carried out on those bridge with span 30.0m up to 120.0m. The conclusions drawn from this study are as follows. 1) The bending moments were calculated to be large for the Rahmen bridge, and the horizontal displacements were estimated to be large for the IPM bridge. 2) Since the bending moments are derived by the span length rather than the extension of the bridge, the permissible bending moment for the span length should be considered in the design. 3) The pile bent of the IPM bridge did not exceed the plastic moment of the steel pipe pile at 120.0m span, but because the horizontal displacement in the shrinkage direction is close to 25mm, the design considerations are needed. 4) In the actual design, it is important to ensure stability against member forces, so review of the negative moment is most important.

Ports are vital social infrastructures that significantly influence both people's lives and a country's economy. In South Korea, the aging of port infrastructure combined with the increased frequency of various natural disasters underscores the necessity of displacement monitoring for safety management of the port. In this study, the time-series displacements of Yeongilman Port and surrounding areas in Pohang, South Korea, were measured by applying Permanent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PSInSAR) to Sentinel-1 SAR images collected from the satellite's ascending (February 2017-July 2023) and descending (February 2017-December 2021) nodes, and the displacement associated with the 2017 Pohang earthquake in the port was analyzed. The southern (except the southernmost) and central parts of Yeongilman Port showed large displacements attributed to construction activities for about 10 months at the beginning of the observation period, and the coseismic displacement caused by the Pohang earthquake was up to 1.6 cm of the westward horizontal motion and 0.5 cm of subsidence. However, little coseismic displacement was observed in the southernmost part of the port, where reclamation was completed last, and in the northern part of the oldest port. This represents that the weaker the consolidation of the reclaimed soil in the port, the more vulnerable it is to earthquakes, and that if the soil is very weakly consolidated due to ongoing reclamation, it would not be significantly affected by earthquakes. Summer subsidence and winter uplift of about 1 cm have been repeatedly observed every year in the entire area of Yeongilman Port, which is attributed to volume changes in the reclaimed soil due to temperature changes. The ground of the 1st and 2nd General Industrial Complexes adjacent to Yeongilman Port subsided during the observation period, and the rate of subsidence was faster in the 1st Industrial Complex. The 1st Industrial Complex was observed to have a westward horizontal displacement of 3 mm and a subsidence of 6 mm as the coseismic displacement of the Pohang earthquake, while the 2nd Industrial Complex was analyzed to have been little affected by the earthquake. The results of this study allowed us to identify the time-series displacement characteristics of Yeongilman Port and understand the impact of earthquakes on the stability of a port built by coastal reclamation.

Beam-column gravity or Intermediate Moment frames subjected to unexpected large displacements are vulnerable when no seismic details are provided, which is typical. Conversely, economic efficiency of those frames is decreased if unnecessary special detailing is applied as the beam and column size becomes quite large and steel congestion is caused by joint transverse reinforcement in beam-column connections. Moderate seismic design is used in Korea for beam-column connections of buildings with structural walls, which are to be destroyed when the unexpected large earthquake occurs. Nonetheless, performance of such beamcolumn connections may be substantially improved by the addition of steel fibers. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of steel fibers in reinforced concrete exterior beam-column connections and possibility for the replacement of some joint transverse reinforcement. Ten half-scale beam-column connections with non-seismic details were tested under cyclic loads with two cycles at each drift up to 19 cycles. Main test parameters used were the volume ratio of steel fibers (0%, 1%, 1.5%) and joint transverse reinforcement amount. The test results show that maximum capacity, energy dissipation capacity, shear strength and bond condition are improved with the application of steel fibers to substitute transverse reinforcement of beam-column connections. Furthermore, several shear strength equations for exterior connections were examined, including the proposed equation for steel fiber-reinforced concrete exterior connections with non-seismic details.

In the seismic region, non-ductile structures often form soft story and exhibit brittle collapse. However, structure demolition and new structure construction strategies have serious problems, as construction waste, environmental pollution and popular complain. And these methods can be uneconomical. Therefore, to satisfy seismic performance, so many seismic retrofit methods have been investigated. There are some retrofit methods as infill walls, steel brace, continuous walls, buttress, wing walls, jacketing of column or beam. Among them, the infilled frames exhibit complex behavior as follows: flexible frames experiment large deflection and rotations at the joints, and infilled shear walls fail mainly in shear at relatively small displacements. Therefore, the combined action of the composite system differs significantly from that of the frame or wall alone. Purpose of research is evaluation on the seismic performance of infill walls, and improvement concept of this paper is use of SHCCs (strain-hardening cementitious composites) to absorb damage energy effectively. The experimental investigation consisted of cyclic loading tests on 1/3-scale models of infill walls. The experimental results, as expected, show that the multiple crack pattern, strength, and energy dissipation capacity are superior for SHCC infill wall due to bridging of fibers and stress redistribution in cement matrix.

Domestic urban railway underground station structures, which were built in the 1970s ad 1980s, had been constructed as Cut-and-Cover construction system without seismic design. Because the trends of earthquake occurrence is constantly increasing all over the world as well as the Korean Peninsula, massive human casualties and severe properties and structures damage might be occurred in an non-retrofitted underground station during an earthquake above a certain scale. Therefore, to evaluate the retrofit effect and soil-structure interaction of seismic retrofitted underground station, a centrifugal shaking table test with enhanced stiffness on its structural main member are carried out on 1/60 scaled model using the Kobe and Northridge earthquakes. The seismic retrofitted members, which are columns, side walls, and slabs, are evaluated to comparing with existing non-retrofitted centrifuge test results Also, to simulate the scaled ground using variation of shear velocity according to site conditions such as ground depth and density, resonant column test is performed. From the test results, the relative displacement behavior between ground and structures shows comparatively similar in ground, but is increased on ground surface. The seismic retrofit effects were measured using relative displacements and moment behavior of column and side walls rather than slabs. Additionally, earthquake wave can be used to main design factor due to large structural deformation on Kobe earthquake wave than Norhridge earthquake wave.
In order to investigate the tendency of general displacements and behaviors with respect to each construction process as well as the applicability of numerical analysis schemes, this research has focused on not only analyzing a variety of field observations made in a NATM tunnel, such as displacement of top and side, stress of shotcrete and axial strength of rock bolt, but also carrying out a series of numerical analyses. It was established from the investigation that the 2-dimensional continuum numerical analysis was the one which could more accurately predict displacement of crown and side in the area of one step excavation (patten, P1-P3), while the 2-dimensional discontinuum analysis was the most suitable scheme to study that of two step excavation (patten, P4-P6). In addition, the 2-dimensional continuum analysis enabled to appropriately predict the axial strength of rock bolt and stress of shotcrete in all the area of the tunnel. Finally, it has been possible to conclude from the study that the 3-dimensional continuum analysis should be applied to inspect the behavior and tendency with respect to each stage of the construction as well as in the case of joints, such as large turnouts where relaxation loads in both of horizontal and vertical direction are piled up.
A flume experiments was used to study the characteristics of the surface displacements and volumetric water contents (VWC) during torrential rain. The surface displacement and VWC of the granite weathered soil were measured for rainfall intensity (100, 200 mm/hr) and initial ground condition (VWC 7, 14, 26%). The test processes were also recorded by video cameras. According to the test results, The shallow failure is classified into three types: retrogressive failure, progressive failure and defined failure. In the case of retrogressive failure and progressive failure, relatively large damage could occur due to the feature that soil is deposited to the bottom of the slope. the shallow failure occurred when the VWC reached a certain value regardless of the initial soil condition. It was found that the shallow failure can be predicted through the increase patton of the VWC under the condition of the ground dry condition (VWC 7%) and the natural condition (VWC 14%). For high rainfall intensity, progressive failure predominated, and rainfall intensity above a certain level did not affect wetting front transition.

In this study nonlinear dynamic behaviors of towed tow-tension cables are numerically analysed. In the case of a taut cable analysis, a bending stiffness term is usually neglected due to its minor effect but it plays an important role in a low-tension cable analysis. A low-tension cable may experience large displacements due to relatively small restoring forces and thus the effects of fluid and geometric non-linearities become predominant. The bending stiffness and non-linearity effects are considered in this work. In order to obtain dynamic behaviors of a towed low-tension cable, three-dimensional nonlinear dynamic equation is described and discretized by employing a finite difference method. An implicit method and Newton-Raphson iteration are adopted for the time integration and nonlinear solutions. For the calculation of huge size of matrices. block tri-diagonal matrix method is applied, which is much faster than the well-known Gauss-Jordan method in two point boundary value problems. Some case studies are carried out and the results of numerical simulations are compared with those of a in-house program of WHOI Cable with good agreements.
As the natural aggregates such as sand and clay are getting exhausted, the quantity of utilizing geosynthetics is being increased in the solid waste landfill. Especially, the waste landfills have been constructed at the gorge in the mountainous area and reclaimed land from the sea in the Korean Peninsula. Those areas are not favorable for construction of waste landfill in geotechnical engineering aspect. In this study, the frictional characteristics of geosynthetics that used in the waste landfill were estimated. Then, the studies of the behavior of geosynthetics and stability of LDCRS (Leachate Detection, Collection, and Removal System) of side slope were conducted in the waste landfill by means of the pilot test, and numerical analysis. Geocomposite which is combined type or separated type is influenced on the strain itself, and also implicated in the stress and strain of geomembrane at the lower layer. The strain on the combined type of geocomposite is about 50% smaller than that of the separated type at the side slope. The lateral displacement and settlement of top at the slope with the separated type are three times greater than that of the combined type. In the numerical analysis, discontinuous plans in between ground and geosynthetic, geosynthetic and geosynthetic, goesynthetic and waste have been modeled with the interface element. The results gave a good agreement with the field large-scale model test. The relative displacements of geosynthetics were also investigated and hence the interface modeling of liner system is appropriate for analysis of geosynthetics liner system in the waste landfill.
