  • Hierarchical structure parameters, proposed in She-Leveque model, are investigated for velocity components obtained from different flow types over a large range of Reynolds numbers 255 < Re𝜆 < 720. The values of intermittency parameter 𝛽, with respect to a fixed velocity component, are observed nearly same for all four types of turbulence. The parameter 𝛾, for streamwise velocity components is nearly the same but significantly different for vertical components in different flows. It is also observed that for both parameters, an obvious relation between the longitudinal and transverse components 𝛽T < 𝛽L (and 𝛾T < 𝛾L) always holds. However, the difference between 𝛽L and 𝛽T is found very small in all types of turbulent flows, we studied here. It is evidenced that at low Reynolds numbers, the deviations from K41 scaling are mainly due to the most intense structures and slightly because of more heterogeneous hierarchy of fluctuation structures. However, at higher Reynolds numbers the deviations seem as a consequence of the most intense structures only. Over all, the study suggests that the hierarchy parameter 𝛽 may be consider as a universal constant.

  • The performance of an inverter-driven water-to-water heat pump with an electronic expansion valve (EEV) was measured as a function of compressor frequency, load conditions, and EEV opening. Based on the test results, a controller using proportional integral (PI) feedback or PI feedforward algorithm was designed and tested to investigate capacity modulation and transient response control of the system. Although the relation between superheat and EEV opening of the heat pump showed nonlinear characteristics, a control gain obtained at the rated frequency was applicable to various operating conditions without causing large deviations. When the simple PI feedback control algorithm was applied, a large overshoot of superheat and wet compression were observed due to time delay effects of compressor frequency. However, applying PI feedforward control scheme yielded better system performance and higher reliability, compared to the PI feedback algorithm.

  • We study the three-dimensional genus topology of large-scale structure using the CMASS Data Release 11 sample of the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). The CMASS sample yields a genus curve that is characteristic of one produced by Gaussian random-phase initial conditions. The data thus supports the standard model of inflation where random quantum fluctuations in the early universe produced Gaussian random-phase initial conditions. Modest deviations in the observed genus from random phase are as expected from the nonlinear evolution of structure. We construct mock SDSS CMASS surveys along the past light cone from the Horizon Run 3 (HR3) N-body simulations, where gravitationally bound dark matter subhalos are identified as the sites of galaxy formation. We study the genus topology of the HR3 mock surveys with the same geometry and sampling density as the observational sample, and the observed genus topology to be consistent with LCDM as simulated by the HR3 mock samples.

  • Consider a multitype queue where queued customers arc served in their order of arrival at a rate which depends on the customer type. Here we calculate the sharp asymptotics of the probability the total number of customers in the queue reaches a high level before emptying. The natural state space to describe this queue is a tree whose branches increase in length as the number of customers in the queue grows. Consequently it is difficult to prove a large deviation principle. Moreover, since service rates depend on the customer type the stationary distribution is not of product form so there is no simple expression for the stationary distribution. Instead, we use a change of measure technique which increases the arrival rate of customers and decreases the departure rate thus making large deviations common.

  • Large fluctuations in surface strain at the level of steel are expected in reinforced concrete flexural members at a given stage of loading due to the emergent structure (emergence of new crack patterns). This has been identified in developing deterministic constitutive models for finite element applications in Ibrahimbegovic et al. (2010). The aim of this paper is to identify a suitable probability distribution for describing the large deviations at far from equilibrium points due to emergent structures, based on phenomenological, thermodynamic and statistical considerations. Motivated by the investigations reported by Prigogine (1978) and Rubi (2008), distributions with heavy tails (namely, alpha-stable distributions) are proposed for modeling the variations in strain in reinforced concrete flexural members to account for the large fluctuations. The applicability of alpha-stable distributions at or in the neighborhood of far from equilibrium points is examined based on the results obtained from carefully planned experimental investigations, on seven reinforced concrete flexural members. It is found that alpha-stable distribution performs better than normal distribution for modeling the observed surface strains in reinforced concrete flexural members at these points.

  • This paper proposes a cost-efficient and automatic method for large data acquisition from a test chip without expensive equipment to characterize random process variation in an integrated circuit. Our method requires only a test chip, a personal computer, a cheap digital-to-analog converter, a controller and multimeters, and thus large volume measurement can be performed on an office desk at low cost. To demonstrate the proposed method, we designed a test chip with a current model logic driver and an array of 128 current mirrors that mimic the random process variation of the driver's tail current mirror. Using our method, we characterized the random process variation of the driver's voltage due to the random process variation on the driver's tail current mirror from large volume measurement data. The statistical characteristics of the driver's output voltage calculated from the measured data are compared with Monte Carlo simulation. The difference between the measured and the simulated averages and standard deviations are less than 20% showing that we can easily characterize the random process variation at low cost by using our cost-efficient automatic large data acquisition method.

  • The objective of this study Is to investigate the heat transfer performance of plate discrete fin-and-tube heat exchangers with large fin pitch. In this study, twenty-two heat exchangers were tested with a variation of fin pitch, number of tube row, longitudinal tube pitch and fin alignment. Discrete fin type exchangers improved heat transfer performance more than 10% compared to tile continuous fin type heat exchangers. The air-side heat transfer coefficient decreased with a reduction of the fin pitch and an increase of the number of tube row, The staggered fin alignment improved heat transfer performance more than 6% compared to the inline fin alignment. The effect of longitudinal tube pitch was insignificant on the j-factor and experiments found opposite effects on the j-factor with respect to fin alignment. Heat transfer correlations were developed from the measured data for flat plate discrete fin-and-tube heat exchangers with large fin pitch. The correlations yielded good predictions of the measured data with mean deviations of 1,4% and 0.3% for tire inline and staggered tube alignment, respectively.

  • New experiments focusing on the evolution characteristics of nonlinear wave trains were conducted in a large wave flume. A series of wave trains with added sidebands, varying initial steepness, perturbed amplitudes and frequencies, were physically generated in a long wave flume. The experimental results show that the increasing wave steepness, increases the speed of sidebands growth. To study the frequency and phase modulation, the Morlet wavelet transform is adopted to extract the instantaneous frequency of wave trains and the phase functions of each wave component. From the instantaneous frequency, there are local frequency downshifts, even an effective frequency downshift was not observed. The frequency modulation increases with an increase in amplitude modulation, and abrupt changes of instantaneous frequencies occur at the peak modulation. The wrapped phase functions show that in the early stage of the modulation, the phase of the upper sideband first diverges from that of the carrier waves. However, at the later stage, the discrepancy phase from the carrier wave transformed to the lower sideband. The phase deviations appear in the front of the envelope's peaks. Furthermore, the evolution of the instantaneous frequency exhibits an approximate recurrence-type for the experiment with large imposed sidebands, even when the corresponding recurrence is not observed in the Fourier spectrum.
