The unloading effect from excavations can cause the deformation of adjacent tunnels, which may seriously influence the operation and safety of those tunnels. However, systematic studies of the deformation characteristics of tunnels located along side excavations are limited, and simplified methods to predict the influence of excavations on tunnels are also rare. In this study, the simulation capability of a finite element method (FEM) considering the small-strain characteristics of soil was verified using a case study. Then, a large number of FEM simulations examining the influence of excavations on adjacent tunnels were conducted. Based on the simulation results, the deformation characteristics of tunnels at different positions and under four deformation modes of the retaining structure were analyzed. The results indicate that the deformation mode of the retaining structure has a significant influence on the deformation of certain tunnels. When the deformation magnitudes of the retaining structures are the same, the influence degree of the excavation on the tunnel increased in this order: from cantilever type to convex type to composite type to kick-in type. In practical projects, the deformation mode of the retaining structure should be optimized according to the tunnel position, and kick-in deformation should be avoided. Furthermore, two methods to predict the influence of excavations on adjacent tunnels are proposed. Design charts, in terms of normalized tunnel deformation contours, can be used to quantitatively estimate the tunnel deformation. The design table of the excavation influence zones can be applied to determine which influence zone the tunnel is located in.
The connection between a column and a beam is of particular importance to ensure the safety of civil engineering structures, such as high-rise buildings and bridges. While the connector must bear sufficient force for load transmission, increase of its ductility, toughness and damping may greatly enhance the overall safety of the structures. In this work, a composite beam-column connector is proposed and analyzed with the finite element method, including effects of elasticity, linear viscoelasticity, plasticity, as well as geometric nonlinearity. The composite connector consists of three parts: (1) soft steel; (2) polymer; and (3) conventional steel to be connected to beam and column. It is found that even in the linear range, the energy dissipation capacity of the composite connector is largely enhanced by the polymer material. Since the soft steel exhibits low yield stress and high ductility, hence under large deformation the soft steel has the plastic deformation to give rise to unique energy dissipation. With suitable geometric design, the connector may be tuned to exhibit different strengths and energy dissipation capabilities for real-world applications.

In this study, a finite element analysis of a cylindrical multi-pass weldment for dissimilar metals was performed. The effects of the heat input method and weld bead generation method were considered. We compared two heat input methods: the heat flux method and the temperature method. We also compared two weld bead generation methods: the element birth method and the quiet element method. Although the results of the thermal analysis show deviations between the two heat input methods, the welding residual stresses were similar. Because the areas exposed to high temperature were similar and the strength of the material was very low in high temperature (above the $1000^{\circ}C$), the effects of the weld bead temperature were insignificant. The distributions of the welding residual stress were similar to each other. However, gaps and overlaps occurred on the welding boundary surfaces when the element birth method was applied. The quiet element method is more suitable for a large deformation model in order to simulate a more accurate weld shape.
The ancient underground cities are a collection of self-supporting spaces that have been manually excavated in the soil or rock in the past. Because these structures have a very high cultural value due to their age, the study of their stability under the influence of natural hazards, such as earthquakes, is very important. In this research, while introducing the underground city of Ouyi Nushabad located in the center of Iran as one of the largest man-made underground cities of the old world, the analysis of dynamic stability is performed. For this purpose, the dynamic stress-displacement analysis has been performed through numerical modeling using the finite element software PLAXIS. At this stage, by simulating the Khorgo earthquake as one of the large-scale earthquakes that occurred in Iran, with a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale, dynamic analysis by time history method has been performed on three selected sections of underground spaces. This study shows that the maximum amount of horizontal and vertical dynamic displacement is 12.9 cm and 17.7 cm, respectively, which was obtained in section 2. The comparison of the results shows that by increasing the cross-sectional area of the excavation, especially the distance between the roof and the floor, in addition to increasing the amount of horizontal and vertical dynamic displacement, the obtained maximum acceleration is intensified compared to the mapping acceleration applied to the model floor. Therefore, preventive actions should be taken to stabilize the excavations in order to prevent damage caused by a possible earthquake.

For analyze of the bearing capacity, skin friction and settlements of pile on axial compressive loading, both Load transfer tests of pile and pile loading test in field have application to commonly before pile installing. A bearing capacity of pile was affected by the characteristics of surrounding ground of pile. Especially, that is very different because of evaluation of settlement due to each soil conditions of ground depths. The ground characteristics using evaluation of bearing capacity of pile through load transfer analysis depends on N values of SPT, and then a bearing capacity of pile installed soft ground and refilled area may be difficult to rational evaluation. An evaluation of bearing capacity on pile applied axial compressive loading was effected by strength of ground installed pile, unconfined compressive strength at pile tip, pile diameter, rough of excavated surface, confining pressure and deformation modules of rock etc and these are commonly including the unreliability due to slime occurred excavation works. Load transfer characteristics considered ground conditions take charge of load transfer of large diameter pile was investigated through case study applied load transfer tests. To these, matrix analytical technique of load transfer using finite differential equation developed and compared with the results of pile load test.

A reliable steady/transient hydro-elastic analysis is developed for flexible (composite) marine propeller blade design which deforms according to its environmental load (ship speed, revolution speed, wake distribution, etc.) Hydro-elastic analysis based on CFD and FEM has been widely used in the engineering field because of its accurate results however it takes large computation time to apply early propeller design stage. Therefore the analysis based on a boundary element method-Finite Element Method (BEM-FEM) Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is introduced for computational efficiency and accuracy. The steady FSI analysis, and its application to reverse engineering, is designed for use regarding optimum geometry and ply stack design. A time domain two-way coupled transient FSI analysis is developed by considering the hydrodynamic damping ffects of added mass due to fluid around the propeller blade. The analysis makes possible to evaluate blade strength and also enable to do risk assessment by estimating the change in performance and the deformation depending on blade position in the ship's wake. To validate this hydro-elastic analysis methodology, published model test results of P5479 and P5475 are applied to verify the steady and the transient FSI analysis, respectively. As the results, the proposed steady and unsteady analysis methodology gives sufficient accuracy to apply flexible marine propeller design.

The plastic deformation of polycrystalline materials is induced by changes of the microstructure when the loading is beyond the critical state of stress. Constitutive models for the crystal plasticity have the common objective which relates microscopic single crystals in the crystallographic texture to the macroscopic continuum point. In this paper, a new consistent tangent stiffness for the anisotropic elasto-viscoplastic analysis of polycrystalline deformation is developed, which can be used in the finite element analysis for the slip-dominated large deformation of polycrystalline materials. In order to calculate the consistent tangent stiffness, the state function is defined based on the consistency condition between the elastic and plastic stress. The rate of shearing increment($\Delta{\gamma}^{\alpha}$) is calculated with satisfying the consistency condition. The consistency condition becomes zero when the trial resolved shear stress($\tau^{{\alpha}^*}$) becomes resolved shear stress($\tau^{\alpha}$) at every step. Iterative method is utilized to calculate the rate of shearing increment based on the implicit backward Euler method. The consistent tangent stiffness can be formulated by differentiating the rate of shearing increment with total strain increment after the instant rate of shearing increment converges. The proposed tangent stiffness is applied to the ABAQUS/Standard by implementing in the ABAQUS/UMAT.

As the interface bonding phenomenon between the matrix and the reinforcements has a large effect on the mechanical properties of MMCs, a sugestion of the strength analysis technique considering the residual stress and the interface bonding phenomenon is very important for the design of pans and the estimation of fatigue behavior. In this paper the three dimensional finite element anaysis is performed during the elasto-plastic deformation of the particulate reinforced metal matrix composites. It was analyzed with the volume fractions in view of microscale. Bonding strength. interface separation and matrix void growth between the matrix and the reinforcements will be predicted on deformation under tensile loading. An interface seperation is estimated by the fracture criterion which is a critical value of generalized plastic work per unit volume. The shape of the reinforcement is assumed to be a perfect sphere. And the type of the reinforcement distribution is assumed as FCC array. The thermal residual stress in MMCs is induced by the heat treatment. It is included at the simulation as an initial residual stress. The element birth and death method of the ANSYS program is used for the estimation of the interface bonding strength, void generation and propagation. It is assumed that the fracture in the matrix region begin to occur under the external loading when the plastic work per unit volume is equal to the critical value. The fracture strain will be defined. The experimental data of the extruded $SiC_p$>/606l Al composites are compared with the theoretical results.

Flexible media such as the paper, the film, etc. are thin, light and very flexible. They behave in geometrically nonlinear. Any of small force makes large deformation. So we must including aerodynamic effect when its behavior is predicted. Thus, it becomes fully coupled fluid-structure interaction(FSI) problem. In FSI problems, where the fluid mesh near the structure undergoes large deformations and becomes unacceptably distorted, which drive the time step to a very small value for explicit calculations, the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) methods or rezoning are used to create a new undistorted mesh for the fluid domain, which allows the calculations to continue. In this paper, FE sheet model considering geometric nonlinearity is formulated to simulate the behavior of the flexible media. Aerodynamic force to the media by surrounding air is calculated by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Q2Q1(Taylor-Hood) element which means biquadratic for velocity and bilinear for pressure is used for fluid domain. Q2Q1 element satisfies LBB condition and any stabilization technique is not needed. In this paper, cantilevered sheet in the viscous incompressible Navier-Stokes flow is simulated to check the mesh motion and numerical integration scheme, and then falling paper in the air is simulated and the effects of some representative parameters are investigated.

The shearing and punching processes are analyzed with the finite element method using an isotropic material model. The experimental result in the punching process shows that final radiuses of sheet metal according to the rolling direction and transverse direction are different because of the material anisotropy. The material anisotropy is induced by complicated large deformation in the polycrystalline aggregate. The contact region between the punch and sheet metal experiences severe deformation such as shear, compression and tension in the punching process. In this paper, the analysis of punching process for Al 1100 is performed with the ABAQUS Standard. The analysis of texture development and evolution is carried out based on the deformation history in the punching process. The deformation histories are extracted by UMAT in the ABAQUS Standard. The torture development is investigated with the pole figure and yield surface during the punching process.
