  • One of the primary factors limiting the application of composite-metal adhesively bonded joints in structural design is the lack of a good evaluation tool for the interfacial strength to predict the load bearing capacity of boned joints. In this paper composite-steel adhesion strength is evaluated in terms of stress intensity factor and fracture toughness of the interface corner. The load bearing capacity of double lap joints, fabricated by co-cured bonding of composite-steel adherends has been determined using fracture mechanical analysis. Bi-material interface comer stress singularity and its order are presented. Finally stress intensities and fracture toughness of the wedge shape bi-material interface corner are determined. Double lap joint failure locus and its mixed mode crack propagation criterion on $K_1-K_{11}$ plane have been developed by tension tests with different bond lengths.

  • In this paper, the bonding strengths of co-cured T800 carbon/epoxy composite-aluminum single lap joints with and without additional pressures were investigated using the pressure information induced by the fiber tension during a filament winding process. The specimens of all the tests were fabricated by an autoclave vacuum bag de-gassing molding being controlled forming pressures (absolute pressures of 0.1MPa, 0.3MPa and 0.7MPa including vacuum). A special device which can act uniform additional pressures on the joining part of the single lap joint specimen was designed to measure the bonding strengths of composite-aluminum liners of type III hydrogen pressure vessel fabricated by a filament winding process. After the three different additional pressures (absolute pressures of 0.1MPa, 0.3MPa and 0.7MPa) were applied to the specimens the effect of the additional pressures on the bonding strengths of the co-cured single-lap joints were evaluated.

  • In this study, the stress reduction effect was evaluated for GFRP/Mg single lap bonded joints according to six different adherend shapes. Six different types of the single lap joint specimen were modeled and assessed using geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis. Moreover, three dimensional effect of stress distribution for the different adherend shapes was investigated. From the analysis, the dissimilar single lap bonded joint with the normal tapering and without the spew fillet (model 2) showed the highest stress values. In contrast, the peel stress values of both the square ended adherends with the spew fillet (model 3) and the reverse tapered adherends with the spew fillet (model 5) were 65.8% and 65.5% lower than the reference model.

  • In the development of a cryogenic propellant tank, the proper selection of adhesives to bond composite and metal liner is important for the safety of operation. In this study, 3 types of adhesives were tested for the ability to bond CFRP composites developed for cryogenic use and aluminum alloy (Al 6061-T6) for lining the tank using double-lap joint specimens. The double-lap joint specimens were tested inside an environmental chamber at room temperature and cryogenic temperature ($-150^{\circ}C$) respectively to compare the bond strength of each adhesive and fracture characteristics. The material properties with temperature of component materials of double-lap joints were measured. In addition, ABAQUS was used for the purpose of analyzing the experimental results.

  • The influence of the notch length on the stress distribution of mid-bondline and adherend was investigated using elasto-plastic finite element method. The results from the simulation showed that peak stress of mid-bondline decreased markedly as adherend with notch in the middle of lap zone, and the stress in the middle of joint with low stress originally increased evidently. All the peak stresses decreased firstly and increased again as the length of notch increased. The relative higher peak stress appeared at the point near the notch of adherend where might be failed previously during the loading procedure.

  • Since stainless steel plates have good mechanical properties, weldability, appearance and resistance of corrosion, these are traditionally used for vehicles such as the bus and the train. And they are mainly fabricated by spot welding. But fatigue strength of their spot welded joint is considerably influenced by welding conditions as well as geometrical factors. Thus a reasonable and systematic criterion for long life design of spot welded body structure must be established. In this report, strain energy density was analyzed by using 3-dimensional finite element model about the IB-type spot welded lap joint under tension-shear load. Fatigue tests were conducted on them having various thickness, joint angle, lapped length and width. From their results, it was found that fatigue strength of the IB-type spot welded lap joints could be effectively and systematically rearranged by strain energy density at the edge of nugget.

  • Recently, a new issue in designing spot welded structures such as automobile and train car bodies is to predict an economical fatigue design criterion. One of the most typical and traditional methods is to use a ΔP-N$\sub$f/ curve. However, since the fatigue data on the ΔP-N$\sub$f/ curve vary according to the welding conditions, materials, geometry of joint and fatigue loading conditions, it is necessary to perform the additional fatigue tests for determining a new fatigue design criterion of spot-welded lap joint having specific dimension and geometry. In this study, the stress distributions around spot welds of various spot welded lap joints such as in-plane bending type (IB type), tension shea. type (TS type) and cross tension type (CT type) were numerically analyzed. Using these results, the ΔP-N$\sub$f/ curves Previously obtained from the fatigue tests for each type were rearranged into the Δ$\sigma$-N$\sub$f/ relations with the maximum stresses at the nugget edge of the spot weld.

  • This paper describes the prediction of eigenfrequencies due to changes in stiffness and mass in the connection area of the lap joint beam in terms of linear and torsional stiffness as well as connection length. The sensitivities of mass and stiffness in the finite element model were derived by using the first-order differential and algebraic equation and were thereafter applied to obtain new natural frequencies that were compared with theoretical exact solutions. Newly predicted natural frequencies due to only a change in stiffness were in relatively good agreement with those in lower modes for rigid joints, while further investigation was needed for flexible joints. On the other hand, only the change in mass resulted in a large discrepancy in the flexible joint case. It may be strongly anticipated that this study will provide a useful tool for estimating modal parameters by change in any design variable, such as the structural dimension, material property, or connection type for a large-scale structure, even though the proposed methodology is currently limited to a jointed beam.

  • This paper was designed to estimate the adhesion strength of galvannealed coatings on steel sheets. The adhesion strength were evaluated using single lap - shear tests where the lap joint was bonded by structural adhesive. Tests were performed for overlap length of 5mm, 10mm and 15 mm and three directions (0, 45, 90) of steel sheets used as the adherend of the overlap joint. After the tests, FE simulations of the single lap-shear test were also carried out to observe the stress distribution in the interface between the adhesive and the coated sheet. The results showed that the joint failure loads obtained from the tensile tests of bonded single lap-joints were the same, regardless of overlap lengths and directions of steel sheets. Also, the failure of galvannealed coatings greatly depended on shear stress distribution in the interface and the value was about 30MPa.

  • This paper is designed to estimate the adhesion strength of coating layer on galvannealed steel sheet using lap shear test. The single lap shear test is the most commonly used standard test for determining the strength of medium-strength and high strength bonds. The bond strength of bonded single lap joints on subjecting the substrates to loads is determined by lap shear forces in the direction of the bonded joint. In this study, specimen for adhesion strength test was made to attach coated sheet to cold rolled sheet and were heated in temperature of 180 for 20minutes. After test, detached parts of coatings on coated sheet were observed using SEM and EDX to identify substrate and complete detachment. The tested results showed that adhesive strength of coating is unrelated to anisotropy of sheet and is difficult to be extracted using conventional theory because of fine cracks of coating layers which were created during annealing process.
