  • To specify a formal semantics for a programming language is to do a significant part for design, standardization and translation of it. The Python is popular and powerful, it is necessary to do research for a formal semantics to specify a static and dynamic semantics for Python clearly in order to design a similar language and do an efficient translation. This paper presents the Action Equation 2.0 that specifies a formal semantics for Python to change and update Action Equation. To measure the execution time for Python programs, we implemented the semantic structure specified in Action Equation 2.0 in Java, and prove through simulation that Action Equation 2.0 is a real semantic structure that can be implemented. The specified Action Equation 2.0 is compared to other descriptions, in terms of readability, modularity, extensibility, and flexibility and then we verified that Action Equation 2.0 is superior to other formal semantics.

  • The semantics of whole involves distributivity, which may not be accounted for by the distributive operator for plurals or quantifiers. I review the pragmatic approach to whole by Moltmann (2005) and propose that the semantics of whole can be explained by the member specification function, which maps a group to its members. Although NPs with whole are morphologically singular, they become semantically plural with the application of the function. The distributive operator for plurals is introduced on a sentence with whole, which explains the distributivity of whole.

  • This study reviews (i) the (dis)advantages of two major semantic theories of focus, i.e., the Alternative Semantics (AS) and the Structured Meaning Theory (SM), and (ii) the hybrid analysis consisting of these two theories proposed by Krifka (2006). After pointing out a problem of this hibrid analysis, this study attempts to show the third alternative, i.e., the theory of identificational predication for focus can solve this problem.

  • This paper deals with temporal markers -ess and -(nu)n in Korean, and provides formal interpretations of these markers within the framework of interval semantics. I propose that the truth-conditional interpretation of -ess and -(nu)n sentences is obtained by locating the involved eventuality within a 'completive interval' and 'imcompletive interval', respectively. Since characterization of these two invervals makes reference to the evaluation time, the basic distinction between the two lies on tense. Furthermore, I will argue that perfective/imperfective aspect meaning that usually arises in -ess/-nun sentences should be explained in terms of a conversational implicature.

  • This paper investigates the semantics of English there existential sentences. By examining discourse functions and pragmatic facts, it accounts for semantic facts which have not been discussed elsewhere. Further, it is a new attempt to incorporate information-theoretic notions into formal semantics. I propose that existential statements as expressing Austinian propositions. The proposed meanings account for the fact that post-copular NPs cannot constitute the restruction of an adverb of quantification nor admit a partitive reading.

  • This paper describes Korean Nominal Bank, a project that provides argument structure for instances of the predicative nouns in the Sejong parsed Corpus. We use the language resources of the Sejong project, so that the same set of data is annotated with more and more levels of annotation, since a new type of a language resource building project could bring new information of separate and isolated processing. We have based on the annotation scheme based on the Sejong electronic dictionary, semantically tagged corpus, and syntactically analyzed corpus. Our work also involves the deep linguistic knowledge of syntaxsemantic interface in general. We consider the semantic theories including the Frame Semantics of Fillmore (1976), argument structure of Grimshaw (1990) and argument alternation of Levin (1993), and Levin and Rappaport Hovav (2005). Various syntactic theories should be needed in explaining various sentence types, including empty categories, raising, left (or right dislocation). We also need an explanation on the idiosyncratic lexical feature, such as collocation and etc.

Abstract Attribute grammars are a formal notation which expresses the static semantics of programming languages, but they are not suitable for expressing dynamic semantics. To describe dynamic semantics and implement a specified language, we extend attribute grammars and present new action equations which describe static and dynamic semantics. The incremental interpreter of a SIMP language is designed and implemented from the dynamic semantics of presented action equations. The incremental interpreter is to translate only modified part in the language-based programming environments and have results of whole program. Our interpreter is implemented in C with Lex and Yacc on SUN 1000. When we execute example programs, the incremental evaluation of any assignment and IF statements executes efficiently. But in the case of loop, we execute efficiently when the effected statements to be reexecuted in the loop are of small number.

  • Most of the previous approaches to English agreement phenomena have relied upon only one component of the grammar (e.g., either syntax, or semantics, or pragmatics). This paper argues that interrelationships among different grammatical components play crucial roles in such phenomenon too (cf. Kathol 1999 and Hudson 1999). The paper proposes that, contrary to traditional wisdom, English determiner-noun agreement is morpho-syntactic whereas subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent agreement are reflections of index agreement (cf. Pollard and Sag 1994). The present hybrid analysis of English agreement shows the importance of the interaction of different components of the grammar in accounting for English agreement phenomena. In particular, once we allow morphology to tightly interact with the system of syntax, semantics, or even pragmatics, we could provide a solution to some puzzling English agreement phenomena. This allows a more principled theory of English agreement.
