  • In relation to the preparation of Langmuir-Blodgett thin film, four kinds of N-alkylpyridiniurn bromide were synthesized. The values of surface tensions of these materials, measured with a Traube stalagmometer, gave the relationship between the critical micells hydrophobic radical and between CMC and temperature. Values of thermodynamic properties(${\Delta}H^0_m,\;{\Delta}S^0_m,\;{\Delta}G^0_m,$) for the formatoin of micelle were also obtained. Experiments gave the following results; at the temperature range between 40 and 60$^{\circ}C, CMC of Hexadecyl-, Octadecyl-, Eicosyl-, and Docosyl-Pyridinium Bromide were $7.64{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}9.13{\times}10^{-4},\;3.85{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}4.60{\times}10^{-4},\;2.00{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}2.39{\times}10^{-4},\;and\;1.07{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}1.28{\times}10^{-4}$ mol/l, respectively. Surface tension, ${\Gamma}_{CMC}$, of those were 33.49${\sim}$36.00, 34.78${\sim}$37.61, 35.49${\sim}$37.61 and 38.76${\sim}$55.80 dyne/cm, respectively, The relationship between CMC and the mumber of carbon atoms in the hydrophobic radical, N was expressed as follows : Log(CMC)=A-BN where A and B are constants. At the temperature range between 40 and 60$^{\circ}C$, the change of Gibbs evergy (${\Delta}G_m$) for one methylene group ($-CH_2-$) were -0.65RT, respectively, The minus values of enthalpy change (${\Delta}H_m$) suggest that the formation of micelle is exothermic. Additionally, the overall increase in the entropy change (${\Delta}S_m$) with respect to the temperature increase suggests that the formation of micelle is attained by a exothermic enthalpy directed process.

  • An artificial photoreceptor composed of bacteriorhodopsin(bR)/flavin complex Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films was developed by mimicking the human visual system. bR and flavin molecules were deposited onto solid substrate by LB technique, and the deposition of two molecules was proved by UV/VIS absorption spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy(AFM). Based on AFM images and photocurrent generation from the LB films, the optimal conditions for device fabrication were determined. With a series of light illuminations, the generated photocurrent could be detected, and the response characteristics of two molecules could be clearly distinguished from each other. According to the obtained signal shapes, three distinctive regions could be found in the obtained action spectrum. Using a correlation between the photocurrent generation and the wavelength of the input light, it was possible to organize the basic rules to interpret the wavelength of the input light. It is concluded that the proposed artificial photoreceptor would e applicable to the bioelectronic device for color recognition.

  • ${\pi}$-A isotherms of the Palmitic acid(PA) with increasing pH shifted to the low area/molecule due to the dissociation of PA at the air-water interface. More condensation of PA monolayers occurred by the addition of Mg$^{2+}$, Ca$^{2+}$ and Ba$^{2+}$ ion in subphase. This condensing effect was increased with increasing the concentration of these ions. Due to the interaction with each ion, PA were formed Mg, Ca, Ba-Palmitate complex. The binding structure between alkaline earth ion and carboxylate ligand in PA has been identified by IR spectrometry. The order of condensing effect of alkaline earth ions at pH 8 was Ca$^{2+}$ > Ba$^{2+}$+ > Mg$^{2+}$. The condensing effect except for Mg$^{2+}$ decreased with increasing atomic number. Whereas, the condensing effect in pure water system decreased with decreasing atomic number in the sequence: Ba$^{2+}$ > Ca$^{2+}$ > Mg$^{2+}$. The miscibility of binary system of PA and hexadecanol in monolayer showed that the miscibility was good for the pure water system. But, in the buffered pH 8 system, bad miscibility was found.
