  • The Bimodal tram is developed in KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute). This vehicle will be used in the public transportation system. The Bimodal tram has the advantages of both bus and train. Bus system has the advantages of flexibility of the routes delivering passengers to the destination and easy accessibility. Train is to meet the scheduled arrival and massive public transportations. The vehicle is the rubber tired tram and is all wheel steered single articulation. The vehicle can be automatically operated by navigation control system (NCS). For the automatic driving, the vehicle lanes will be marked with permanent magnets that are buried in the road. The control algorithm developed for navigation control has to be verified before being applied in the vehicle. In this purpose, we design the simulator for controller test of the bimodal tram.

  • The objective of bridge construction cost allocation is to distribute in a fair and rational manner the bridge construction costs among those vehicles using the bridge. In most bridge construction cost allocation studies, bridge construction costs are mainly distributed according to traffic load(gross vehicle weight), without any consideration of bridge capacity requirements(the number of lanes). In this paper, a bridge cost allocation method for considering both traffic capacity and traffic loads is developed. The proposed method is based on cooperative game theory, particularly two concepts known as the Aumann-Shapley (A-S) value and Shapley value. This method can help to analyze the impact of traffic capacity costs. By applying the proposed method to an example, traffic capacity cost is found to be high so that traffic capacity should be considered to allocate the bridge construction costs to vehicle classes in a more equitable manner.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient and robust lane detection method for detecting immediate left and right lane boundaries of the lane in the roads. The proposed method are based on hyperbolic lane model and the reliable line segment clustering. The reliable line segment cluster is determined from the most probable cluster obtained from clustering line segments extracted by the efficient LSD algorithm. Experiments show that the proposed method works robustly against lanes with difficult environments such as ones with occlusions or with cast shadows in addition to ones with dashed lane marks, and that the proposed method performs better compared with other lane detection methods on an CMU/VASC lane dataset.

  • Most simulated shooting systems are TDM based method and dot type laser has been used. The proposed laser pattern based simulated shooting system is a new approach. It can distinguish shooters by calculating the angle of bar shaped laser pattern by each shooter. Unlike the existing TDM method, it is possible to distinguish shooters and lanes by patterns so that there is no time division restriction like TDM method. It is also possible to recognize overlapped impact points of laser patterns launched by multiple shooters. After the laser pattern based simulated shooting system was implemented, general shot and overlapped shot were tested for each lane. Through experiments, we confirmed the possibility of continuous shooting. In addition, it is possible to separate the pattern by each lane, and 100% recognition result was obtained even if impact points overlapped.

  • Autonomous driving vehicle research demands complex road and lane understanding such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and centering, lane change and turn assist, and driving under complex road conditions. A fast and robust road lane detection subsystem is a basic but important building block for this type of research. In this paper, we propose a method that performs road lane detection from black box input. The proposed system applies Random Sample Consensus to find the best model of road lanes passing through divided regions of the input image under HSV color model. HSV color model is chosen since it explicitly separates chromaticity and luminosity and the narrower hue distribution greatly assists in later segmentation of the frames by limiting color saturation. The implemented method was successful in lane detection on real world on-board testing, exhibiting 86.21% accuracy with 4.3% standard deviation in real time.

  • PURPOSES : This study deals with traffic accidents involving trucks. The objective of this study is to develop a traffic accident model for trucks at roundabouts. METHODS : To achieve its objective, this study gives particular attention to develop appropriate models using Poisson and negative binomial regression models. Traffic accident data from 2007 to 2014 were collected from TAAS data set of road traffic authority. Thirteen explanatory variables such as geometry and traffic volume were used. RESULTS : The main results can be summarized as follows: (1) two statistically significant Poisson models (${\rho}^2=0.398$ and 0.435) were developed, and (2) the analysis revealed the common variables to be traffic volume, number of exit lanes, speed breakers, and truck apron width. CONCLUSIONS : Our modeling reveals that increasing the number of speed breakers and speed limit signs, and widening the truck apron width are important for reducing the number of truck accidents at roundabouts.

  • A high speed train passing through a station may have undesired effects to passengers on platform due to abrupt pressure transients. Therefore it is very important to reduce the possible degree of danger by installing partition walls in passing lanes in designing the stations having passing train. In the present study, a pressure load to a passenger on platform is studied for the cases of various heights of the partition wall to assess the effectiveness of the wall on the passenger safety. From the results, it is seen that the pressure load on a passenger may be largely reduced by the partition wall. The heights of the partition wall for various passing speed are also studied based on the safety regulation.

  • Alternate use of lane at a signalized intersection is a quite different control of the operation of an intersection. This control introduces a new stop line and signal before the original stop line. All of the lanes between the two stop lines are used for left turn traffic or through traffic at a time. The purpose of the control is increasing the capacity of a n intersection without widening the approach width. this paper contains a study on the condition of a application, the proper distances between the two stop lines, the reasonable offsets(rear) to guarantee clearing the vehicles of previous phase, the comparison of approach capacity between the existing control and this control. The study results reveals that the offsets(rear) are rather stable showing the range(maximum value minus minimum value) of it's value does not exceed 3.6 seconds according to the field data. The approach capacity will be increased by 27%, 43%, 59%, 84% when the distances between the stop lines are 30.0m respectively. The control might have theoretical limitation to operate in practice. So an experimental application of the control at some suitable intersections prior to expanding it.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the program for efficient operation of a multi-functional surface mounting device(SMD) which mount various components on a printed circuit board(PCB). These components are provided by diverse types of feeders such as cassette, stick and tray feeders. The SMD has one or two heads. In the SMD, the positions of PCB and feeders and fixed, and the head moves to pick up a component from a feeder and to mount it on the PCB. The number of lanes occupied by each feeder and the nozzle used for each component can be different. We develop an off-line program to minimize the cycle-time of the SMD by studying the optimal assignment of feeders and the optimal mounting sequence of components. Graphical User Interface(GUI) is also developed. Additionally, we consider the line balancing problem which appears when two SMDs are used sequentially.

  • This study deals with the accident models of arterial link sections by vehicle type. The objectives are to analyze the characteristics of accidents, and to develop the models by type. In pursuing the above, this study uses the data of 414 accidents occurred on 24 major arterial links in 2007. The main results analyzed are as follows. First, the number of accidents is analyzed to account for about 47% in passenger car, 15% in SUV and 10% in trucks. Second, 3 Poisson regression models which are all statistically significant are developed using passenger car, SUV and truck as dependant variables. Finally, AADT and the number of traffic islands as common variables, and the number of pedestrian crossings, lanes, connecting roads, intersections(4-Leg), rate of medians and the number of bus stops as specific variables of the models are selected.
