Experiment was performed to investigate the effect of light intensity on growth and flowering status of Korean native Dianthus superbus var. longicalycinus, Sedum middendorifianum, Hemerocallis aurantiaca, Iris ensata var. spontanea and Aquilegia buergeriana var. oxysepola for effective landscaping. Number of floret and flower stalk per a plant were markedly increased under full sun(about 100,000lux), and decreased with decreasing light intensity in all tested plants. This result indicate that it will be cultivated in the open for promote landscaping values. However, leaf area and plant height were more increased under half sun(22,000lux) than open(100,000lux) or shade(7,700lux) in all plants except Sedum middendorifianum. Especially, Hemerocallis aurantiaca had same number of shoot and leaf size, even if planted under shade condition to show a wide adaptation to various light intensities.

Currently, Hyphantira cunea Drury, the fall webworms (FWW), is one of the most severe insect pest for various landscaping trees and mulberry trees. In this study, we investigated whether FWW might be managed by Sodium saccharin (SAC) which is a food additive and not toxic to humans and environment. We found that FWW larvae treated with various concentrations of SAC showed dose-dependent delayed development and low survival rates. The lethal-concentration 50% of FWW larvae to SAC was 0.03 M. We also confirmed that SAC can be used to control FWW larvae attacking mulberry trees in the field. Compared to not-treated or tap-water-spraying control groups, SAC-spraying groups showed significantly higher mortality rates of FWW larvae (56.2%). Thus, SAC can be used for control FWW larvae in mulberry trees.

This study focused on the regulations and support system of green rooftop landscaping between Korea and China. Our research found out regulations and support system to review the supplement point to understand the present state of green rooftop landscaping in the two countries. We aimed to provide basic legal information for the development of green rooftop landscaping regulations. Also, a management plan guide and after-evaluation guide were suggested. First, roof load safety is the foremost factor for the structure of green rooftop landscaping. It includes not only considering the weight of construction materials, but also accurately calculating weight of rain, snow and the rooftop's capacity for people when the rooftop is designed. Second, the appropriate waterproof and root material should be selected basing on climatic conditions. Third, a maintenance and management plan needs to be established to regularly check the plant, facilities, soil and to maintain them. Fourth, the criteria of quality inspection are waterproof and root resistant material, and the growth and development of plants. Waterproof and root resistant materials are a very important part of rooftop greening, so they must be strictly inspected after construction. Fifth, the support system of rooftop greening should be continuously improved. The choice of the object and the amount of support should be strictly stipulated so that the construction of rooftop is promoted when volunteers do rooftop greening.

This study was executed to find out how to improve the planting and use of landscaping plants in Chuncheon. The number of street trees was 17,877 in 2003. The major species of street trees were Ginkgo biloba(52.7%), Prunus sargentii(15.3%), Zelkova serrata(8.9%), Platanus occidentalis(7.3%). Salix babylonica and Platanus occidentalis were decreased, while Prunus sargentii and Zelkova serrata were increased. Salix babylonica is a good species for a lakeside city, but its seeds cause allergies to some people. Most of the trees have been removed in Chuncheon. The planting of Salix babylonica(♂) resulted in no problems, and it should be propagated to plant. The soil of several areas was analysed to investigate soil conditions. The outskirts of city had good conditions in pH, organic matter and minerals, but the downtown areas had high alkalic, due to alkali from footpath concrete blocks. Appropriate pruning adds to the aesthetic and prolongs the useful life; it also requires less managing of insects and diseases to maintain good healthy of street trees. Street trees were not properly pruned due to electric lines and shortage of pruning information. The pruning was controlled by Korea Electric Power Co, which has no pruning information. Pruning must be maintained by a professional landscape company to maintain good shape such as with Bonsai. The Shrubs planting zone between street trees and other trees, and preservation plates were established for healthy of street trees. They have to be repaired and maintained well to keep better environmental conditions. The number of tree and flower species of 68 schools in Chuncheon were 12 and 16, respectively. The species that showed high preference were Juniperus chinensis, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus densiflora, Rosa centifolia, Forsythia koreana, and Rhododendron schlippenbachii. The high frequency of the protection trees designated by Chuncheon were Pinus densiflora, Ginko biloba, Zelkova serrata, Quercus species. It was thought that the diversification of street tree species, the selection of street trees suitable to each space, the generalization of use of native species, the appropriate pruning and proper fertilization, the control of pests and diseases, and the opinions of citizens concerning landscape plants were needed to improve the planting, use and maintenance of landscaping plants in Chuncheon.

After 60 years since the enactment of the cultural property protection act, Korea's national system of protecting what has been valued has been transformed into a 'National Heritage System'. To meet the new system, the classification of national heritage has been re-classified into three categories as cultural heritage, natural heritage, and intangible heritage. In accordance with the sub-classification, acts for cultural heritage act and intangible heritage has been amended and act for natural heritage has been enacted. Act for natural heritage defines natural heritage as natural objects or cultural heritage formed through the interaction between human beings and natural environment. The sub-classification are categorized as follows; animal, plant, geological and natural reserves, natural landscapes, historical-cultural landscapes, and mixed landscapes. It also allows creating traditional landscapes so that traditional way of landscaping can be encouraged and integrated with modern life within historic environment. In line with the new concept of traditional landscaping, existing practices will be also needed to be changed. Traditional landscaping will play a significant role in setting out the new administrative paradigm which focuses on more value preservation. This paper recommends that effective collaboration between government, experts of traditional landscaping, and owners should be established to integrate the new policy in practice.

Constructed wetlands and other aquatic systems have been successfully used for waste and wastewater treatment in either temperate or tropical regions. To treat waste or wastewater in a sustainable manner, the integrated eco-engineering designs are explained in this paper with 2 case studies: (i) a combination of vertical-flow constructed wetland (CW) with plant irrigation systemfor fecal sludge management and (ii) integrated CW units with landscaping at full-scale application for domestic wastewater treatment. The pilot-scale study of fecal sludge management employed 3 vertical-flow CW units, each with a dimension of $5{\times}5{\times}0.65m$ (width ${\times}$ length ${\times}$ media depth) and planted with cattails (Typha augustifolia). At the solid loading rate of 250 kg total solids (TS)/$m^2.yr$ and a 6-day percolate impoundment, the CW system could achieve chemical oxygen demand (COD), TS and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) removal efficiencies in the range of 80 - 96%. The accumulated sludge layers of about 80 - 90 cm was found at the CW bed surface after operating the CW units for 7 years, but no clogging problem has been observed. The CW percolate was applied to 16 irrigation Sunflower plant (Helianthus annuus) plots, each with a dimension of $4.5{\times}4.5m$ ($width{\times}length$). In the study, the CW percolate were fed to the treatment plots at the application rate of 7.5 mm/day but the percolate was mixed with tap water at different ratio of 20%, 80% and 100%. Based on a 1-year data of 3-crop plantation were experimented, the contents of Zn, Mn and Cu in soil of the experimental plots were found to increase with increasing in CW percolate ratios. The highest plant biomass yield and oil content of 1,000 kg/ha and 35%, respectively, were obtained from the plots fed with 20% or 50% of the CW percolate, whereas no accumulation of heavy metals in the plant tissues (i.e. leaves, stems and flowers) of the sunflower is found. In addition to the pilot-scale and field experiments, a case study of the integrated CW systems for wastewater treatment at Phi Phi Island (a Tsunami-hit area), Krabi province, Thailand is illustrated. The $5,200-m^2$ CW systems on Phi Phi Island are not only for treatment of $400m^3/day$ wastewater from hotels, households or other domestic activities, but also incorporating public consultation in the design processes, resulting in introducing the aesthetic landscaping as well as reusing of the treated effluent for irrigating green areas on the Island.
A new Hibiscus cultivar 'Daewangchun', having vigorous growth, uniform plant habit, upright, compact branches, and a long red eye was developed through interspecific crosses between H. syriacus 'Samchully' (♀) and H. sinosyriacus 'Seobong' (♂). The Hibiscus breeding program was initiated in 2005 and Hibiscus ${\times}$ 'Daewangchun' was preliminarily selected as '05-R-204' in 2 008 due to its vigorous growth and stable flower quality w ith rich pink flowers. The s elected line was further evaluated for different growth characteristics, leaf shape, leaf size, and flowering characteristics, as well as tested for distinctness, homogeneity, and stability during 2010-2012. The new cultivar 'Daewangchun' had violet pink flowers (RHS N80C) with a long red eye spot, medium size and fan petals. The size of flower was 12.0 cm and size of the red eye was 3.0 cm. Leaves were 8.7 cm long and 4.7 cm wide. After plant characteristic evaluation for 3 years (2010-2012), 05-R-204 was registered as cultivar 'Daewangchun' (4731, No. of plant variety protection rights) in 2013. This newly developed cultivar 'Daewangchun' has tall vigorous growth and unique flowers with a long red eye and can be used as specimen plants in landscaping.

In a city where the greenery always lacks landscaping roofs of existing buildings offers a way to solve the problem. But the most serious problem that poses is the matter of load limit. At present most existing buildings have the loading capacity of 200 kg/$m^2$ or less on their roofs. If the natural soil is used the loading capacity is easily surpassed because it simply is too heavy. To alleviate this problem it is realized to introduce the light weight artificial soil. The specific gravity of light soil is 0.65 whereas the natural soil is 1.8 when wet. It is three times lighter than the natural soil, thus eases the burden to the roof. The next problem to be confronted is the plant species to plant. It is possible to plant trees but they soon outgrow the loading capacity by weighing 8 times heavier in 10 years. Therefore shrubs and perennials are suggested to be planted because they don't weigh much even when they reach the mature height. The last problem is the stress put on roofs by the weight of the users. By some unexpected event the crowd gathered on a weak roof can cause the structural damage or even the collapse of the roof. The avoid the possibility of collapse a plaza or big pocket should not be designed in a roof garden because they hold crowd. By following the suggested means the old roofs of existing buildings can turn into the urban oases in the sky.
Boxwood is a representative ornamental shrub that is widely used in landscaping horticulture. After pruning, damaged leaves or stems of boxwoods are unavoidably vulnerable to infection by various plant pathogens. Several boxwood diseases caused by fungi, such as Volutella blight and Macrophoma leaf spot, have been reported worldwide including Republic of Korea. In this study, we isolated and identified fungal pathogens of boxwood diseases that occurred in Korea and characterized their morphological and taxonomic characteristics. Boxwood samples showing blight symptoms were collected in Seoul, Republic of Korea, and the putative fungal pathogens Pseudonectria buxi, P. foliicola, and Neofusicoccum buxi were successfully identified. Investigation of the morphological features of the field isolates, including mycelial growth and conidial morphology, and phylogenetic analysis of multiple DNA barcode loci revealed that there were some morphological and genetic variations among isolates, but all of the analyzed isolates were closely related to the corresponding reference strains. We also found that P. foliicola strains were more virulent than P. buxi, and the N. buxi strains isolated in this study were weak pathogens or saprophytes. The results of our study will contribute to the development of control strategies for boxwood diseases caused by fungi and accelerate research on the complex ecology of boxwood diseases.
Prunus subg. Cerasus is the most planted street and landscaping tree in South Korea, but it is difficult to identify species according to their macro-morphologies, leading to problems when attempting properly to manage species quantities. The purpose of this study is to understand the current status of plant types and species compositions in Bundang Central Park in Bundang-gu of Seongnam City and to discuss the necessity of the management of landscaping tree planting. In April of 2021, during the cherry blossom season, a total of 5,866 planted cherry trees were investigated within an area of 6 km2 of Bundang-gu in Seongnam City. As a result, 5,744 trees were sorted into eleven taxa, but the remaining 122 trees were not determined due to their complex morphologies. Prunus ×yedoensis Matsum. accounted for the highest proportion (52.1%), followed by P. serrulata Lindl. var. pubescens Nakai and P. jamasakura Siebold ex Koidz. P. ×nudiflora (Koehne) Koidz., a plant native to Jejudo Island, was not found in this survey. In order to help identify cherry trees based on micro-morphologies, an identification key was presented for the eleven taxa planted as major landscaping trees. It is known that cherry trees frequently form interspecific hybrids in nature. In order to prevent a loss of the genetic originality of native species due to hybridization and gene introgression from foreign cherry trees, it is necessary to manage planting species near the habitats of native taxa and track their origins.
