The Past Landscapes of Gyeong-Po Lake (경포호의 옛모습 추정- 기록자료를 중심으로 -)

  • Due to the pressures from surrounding conditions, the current Gyeong-Po Lake has been loosing its original appearance. Historically, the value of Gyeong-Po Lake has been highlighted at the Ru-Jeongs, which were once used to enjoy the various lakeside landscapes. However, the changes in physical appearance of the lake surroundings have ruined the value of the Ru-Jeongs, and even more changed the view point. As an initiating effort to reestablish and to manage the traditional visual landscapes of the lake, this study puts its emphasis on the traditional point of view. Also, this study tries to find the traditional visual values that are not visible at the current time, based on historic literature such as historic documents, paintings and poems. One of the important findings of this study is that viewing the different landscapes was more highly valued than their physical configurations in historic literatures, and that the focal points in viewing landscape were the Ru-Jeongs(누정). Hence, this study suggests that it is necessary to set the Ru-Jeongs, including Gyeong-Po(경포), Bang-Hye(방해), Hwan-Sun(환선), and Ho-Hae(호해), as the focal points for viewing the landscapes in order to reestablish and manage the traditional landscapes of Gyeong-Po Lake.

A Basic Study on the Yuarye of Ji Cheng (계성의『원치』에 관한 기초적 연구)

  • Ji Cheng's great work on garden design, the 'Yuanye'(Craft of garden), written in 1631 and originally published in 1634 is the first surviving manual on landscape gardening in the Chinese tradition. This study aims at investigating not only Ji Cheng's life, achievements companionship and design activities, but also the xylographic copies, literary style, and framework of Yuanye in their historical context in order to provide the bases for further study, Ji Cheng was exellent in poetry and painting. And he constructed Dongdiyuan in Changzhou around 1623, Wuyuan in Yiaheng in 1631, and Yingyuan in Yangzhou around 1634 But no poems, paintings, and gardens designed by hi shill exist Therefore his design phi philosophy is able to be interpreted only by his work, Yuanye. After publishing, Yuanye fell into obscurity for several centuries in Chlna. It was redescovered and reprinted for the first time in 1931. Yuanye is composed of prefaces and main text The main text is divided into 'the Theory of Construction' and 'on Gardens', and the latter also into 10 sections. In this text Ji Cheng explains the aesthetic principles underlying garden design and the appropriate emotional response to various efftcts Especially, he emphasizes the importance of basin the garden design on the taxi ting nature and features of landscape and making use of natural scenery. The literary style of the book is highly mannered, and there are so many poetic descriptions and Ji Cheng's native Jiangsu dialects. So the translation of the original text is very difficult After this, the major design concepts of Ji Cheng's landscape gardening theory and whole network of these concepts have to be studied.

The Development Patterns of Visual Concepts in Contemporary Landscape Design - With a Focus on Visibility from Expanded Visuality - (현대조경설계에 있어서 시각 개념의 전개 양상 - 가시성에서 확장된 시각성을 중심으로 -)

  • This study emphasizes users' participation, a living-transforming visuality, as users have appeared to be a central element of landscape design but ignored before. Also this study tries to propose meaning of extended visuality in contemporary landscape design on the basis of visual criticism on simple perception-and contemplations convention-based landscape design. For these purposes, this study reviews characteristics of visual changes appeared in modern reductionist paintings. In other words, arts can be interpreted in polysemous ways through bodies' experience. Deconstructive concepts derived from the theoretical reviews can be categorized into three including the participation of the users' bodies from a contemplative point of view, textuality and intertextuality, and experiences from works. Those concepts were used to criticize the previous discourse on landscape designs and to analyze various issues in the theories, themes and techniques in contemporary landscape design. The significance of the expanded visuality in contemporary landscape design is that it brings the users' voluntary participation. This structure can serve as a tool to obtain the users' perceptive effects. At the same time, it can be regarded as a process of establishing the relationships between the users and the works. Thus emphasis is placed not only on the influences of the effects structure of the works themselves, but also on the many different dimensions related to the users' bodies. It implies that the meaning of design is not determined by the designer but a product resulted from the voluntary relationships between users and works. These findings lead to ambiguous distinctions between arts everyday life, and eventually to the end of the concepts of formative dichotomous aesthetics and their effectiveness. Finding of this study call for not only redefining the space where landscape design is created and communicated, but also reconsidering the concepts of landscape design and its ontological meanings.

A Study on Plant Symbolism Expressed in Korean Sokwha (Folk Painting) (한국 속화(俗畵)(민화(民畵))에 표현된 식물의 상징성에 관한 연구)

  • The results of tracking the symbolism of plants in the introduction factors of Sokhwa(folk painting) are as the following. 1. The term Sokhwa(俗畵) is not only a type of painting with a strong local customs, but also carries a symbolic meaning and was discovered in "Donggukisanggukjip" of Lee, Gyu-Bo(1268~1241) in the Goryo era as well as the various usage in the "Sok Dongmunseon" in the early Chosun era, "Sasukjaejip" of Gang, Hee-mang(1424~1483), "Ilseongrok(1786)" in the late Chosun era, "Jajeo(自著)" of Yoo, Han-joon(1732~1811), and "Ojuyeonmunjangjeonsango(五洲衍文長箋散稿)" of Lee, Gyu-gyung(1788~?). Especially, according to the Jebyungjoksokhwa allegation〈題屛簇俗畵辯證說〉in the Seohwa of the Insa Edition of Ojuyeonmunjangjeonsango, there is a record that the "people called them Sokhwa." 2. Contemporarily, the Korean Sokhwa underwent the prehistoric age that primitively reflected the natural perspective on agricultural culture, the period of Three States that expressed the philosophy of the eternal spirits and reflected the view on the universe in colored pictures, the Goryo Era that religiously expressed the abstract shapes and supernatural patterns in spacein symbolism, and the Chosun Era that established the traditional Korean identity of natural perspective, aesthetic values and symbolism in a complex integration in the popular culture over time. 3. The materials that were analyzed in 1,009 pieces of Korean Sokhwa showed 35 species of plants, 37 species of animals, 6 types of natural objects and other 5 types with a total of 83 types. 4. The shape aesthetics according to the aesthetic analysis of the plants in Sokhwa reflect the primitive world view of Yin/yang and the Five Elements in the peony paintings and dynamic refinement and biological harmonies in the maehwado; the composition aesthetics show complex multi-perspective composition with a strong noteworthiness in the bookshelf paintings, a strong contrast of colors with reverse perspective drawing in the battlefield paintings, and the symmetric beauty of simple orderly patterns in nature and artificial objects with straight and oblique lines are shown in the leisurely reading paintings. In terms of color aesthetics, the five colors of directions - east, west, south, north and the center - or the five basic colors - red, blue, yellow, white and black - are often utilized in ritual or religious manners or symbolically substitute the relative relationships with natural laws. 5. The introduction methods in the Korean Sokhwa exceed the simple imitation of the natural shapes and have been sublimated to the symbolism that is related to nature based on the colloquial artistic characteristics with the suspicion of the essence in the universe. Therefore, the symbolism of the plants and animals in the Korean Sokhwas is a symbolic recognition system, not a scientific recognition system with a free and unique expression with a complex interaction among religious, philosophical, ecological and ideological aspects, as a identity of the group culture of Koreans where the past and the future coexist in the present. This is why the Koran Sokhwa or the folk paintings can be called a cultural identity and can also be interpreted as a natural and folk meaningful scenic factor that has naturally integrated into our cultural lifestyle. However, the Sokhwa(folk paintings) that had been closely related to our lifestyle drastically lost its meaning and emotions through the transitions over time. As the living lifestyle predominantly became the apartment culture and in the historical situations where the confusion of the identity has deepened, the aesthetic and the symbolic values of the Sokhwa folk paintings have the appropriateness to be transmitted as the symbolic assets that protect our spiritual affluence and establish our identity.

Modes of Expression in the Paintings of the Eight Drunken Immortals in Poetry Paintings and Narrative Paintings (시의도와 고사도 사이, 음중팔선도의 표현 양상)

  • The paintings of the Eight Drunken Immortals refer to the paintings based on an influential poem called "The Song of the Eight Drunken Immortals" by Du Fu, a Chinese poet from the Tang Dynasty. This poem is about the eccentricity of the Eight Immortals known for their love of drinking. The Eight Drunken Immortals have been widely appreciated among East Asian intellectuals, and their stories have also been translated into paintings. Greatly influenced by Li Gonglin's Painting of the Eight Drunken Immortals, people in China have the tendency to create similar scroll paintings, using contour drawing tools. Meanwhile, in Korea, the paintings of the Eight Drunken Immortals have been widely appreciated both as a type of visual art embodying the Drunken Immortals' taste for the arts and as a meaningful object conveying the people's wish for longevity and eternal friendship. According to historical records, the paintings of the Eight Drunken Immortals from the Ming Dynasty were drawn on eight-fold folding screens using a sophisticated ink wash painting technique. In the meantime, the Painting of the Eight Drunken Immortals appreciated by King Jeongjo from the Joseon Dynasty was a colored landscape painting with small human figures on an eight-fold folding screen. Since the recent discovery of Yi Han-cheol's Painting of the Eight Drunken Immortals on an eight-fold folding screen, it has now become possible to imagine how renowned artists such as Kim Hong-do and Kim Yang-gi would have made the narrative figure paintings. In particular, the story of Li Bai, one of the Eight Immortals, was the most famous one often told in the paintings. After the 19th century, there was even an entire panel of narrative folding screen made about Li Bai. As painting manuals and outline drawings were pervasively used, the narrative paintings on Li Bai were mass-produced among commoners. As you can see from this, the Eight Drunken Immortals have been visually represented as thirsty souls who are not disconnected from the world, as honest men of refined taste for the arts, and as protagonists of an object that conveys the people's wish for longevity and eternal friendship. In other words, the paintings of the Eight Drunken Immortals embody multiple undertones: as paintings based on Du Fu's poems and as narrative paintings on the Eight Immortals.

A Study of Kwon Kisoo's Paintings : focused on The 'Four Gracious Plants' and 'Dongguri'

  • Kwon Kisoo is one of the most promising artist in Korea. His paintings portray a lot of metaphors and philosophies in oriental art. As an artist, he adapts both oriental and contemporary ideas to make his paintings. His main motifs are Plum blossoms, Chrysanthemum, Orchid and Bamboos. These plants are known as 'Sa-gonja' in Korean but translated as the 'Four Gracious plants' or the 'Four Gentle Plants in english'. These noble plants represent the four seasons. They grow in different weather conditions. In oriental art, these plants are considered very important for their qualities. These qualities are important attributes for gentlemen in literati painting. The drawing of the 'Four Gracious Plants' in Kwon Kisoo's paintings is simplified. He uses lines, shapes and colour to create contours of the motifs. In his paintings, there is another icon he calls 'Dongguri'. Dongguri is the main character in Kwon Kisoo's paintings. It was developed in 2002 by fast brush strokes. Dongguri is an admired character because it looks like very cute in Kwon Kisoo's paintings. Dongguri is always seen living in the midst of the 'Four Gracious Plants'. The 'Four Gracious Plants' with other landscape features like rocks and mountains are places 'Dongguri' lives. Dongguri is also often found performing a lot of actions like climbing, running, sitting etc. All these actions depict metaphors which have been unraveled in this study.

  • This is the one concept of the Korea paintings which defines the korea Art sprite. The line of korea painting is very important. It is impressions, korea artist had mastered the difficult art line of representing movement. That offers the important motive, that is discovery of Identity. this korea painting's line is like to meditation. To meditate is to think and ponder about the same holy truth for many hours on end, to fix an idea in one's mind and to look at it from all sides without letting go of it. That is the purpose behind the greatest of the korean landscape paintings Futhermore that is the purpose Shui-Mo paintings. This is the most important. What the korean value most highly in art. There is something wonderful in this restraint of Korea art, in its deliberate limitation to a few simple motifs of nature. But today, anyone did not interested in this motif. So that Shui-Mo paintings did not concerned too. Therefore, we consider it childish to look for details in pictures and then to compare them with the real world. We masters to acquire such a facility in the handling of brush and ink that write down their vision while their inspiration was still fresh.

  • Sochi Heo Ryeon (1808 ~ 1893), who was born in Jindo in the late Joseon Dynasty, is a master of three classes, caligography, painting.It is a representative painter who is called the founder of the Honam Paintings. He learned Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism from choui and learned the basics of painting.He became a student of Kim Chung Hee as an introduction of choui. Since then, I have correctly understood the painting aesthetic that realizes the painting by the paintings and paintings of chusa. And he succeeded it in the art world of Honam. His life and artistic features are the wandering that lasted over 70, many work activities, and details the records habit of details of "Sochisillok". Sochi's paintings aimed at Namjong painting, expressing the simple and clear beauty of the free brush and the landscape painting of ye-hwang style. In addition, the peony was painted with bizarre rocks, expressing the lively beauty by changing the brush to be called 'Heo-peony'. And it fulfilled the desire for riches and honors and the taste of Sunbee at the same time, and it became a representative material of 'Unlimsanbang' after being passed on to the house. His naturalized style of painting and painting aesthetic have been influential to the art world in modern Korea until now, forming a painter 's vein for 200 years over 5 generations.

The Pluralistic Development of Postmodern Landscape Design (포스트모던 조경설계의 다원적 전개 양상)

  • The styles of contemporary landscape design have diversified since the emergence of Postmodernism in landscape architecture. The diversification was mostly influenced by contemporary fine arts and architecture. This study examines the pluralistic development of Postmodern landscape design through the investigation of the influences from those sister arts. In this point of view, the main approaches of Postmodern landscape design are thought to be classified into three categories;'the formal abstract approach', 'the figurative approach' and 'the new picturesque approach'. The first category of the formal abstract approach was formulated with the concepts and vocabulary of Minimal Art and Installation Art. Its representative icons such as 'point grids' and 'stripes', and the main concepts such as the sense of 'flahess', 'expansion' and 'materiality' are mostly thought to be originated from these art forms. The second category of the figurative approach is characterised by the concepts and vocabulary of Pop Art and New Image Paintings. Its representative icons such as 'map' or 'figurative forms' and main concepts like the sense of 'reality', 'context' and 'symbolism' are mostly thought to be originated from these art forms. The third category of the new picturesque approach was formulated with the concepts and vocabulary of Land Art and Late Deconstructive Architecture. Its representative icons such as 'hybrid', 'layer' and 'fold', and the main concepts such as the sense of 'complexity', 'continuity' and 'reversibility' are thought to be originated from these art forms. The research shows that the main stream of contemporary landscape design seems to be gradually moving toward the second and third approach above, in step with the cultural orientation and the dynamism of contemporary urban life. Therefore, the study focused especially on the new picturesque approach which would be in greater need for coping with the hybrid culture today.

A study on Ji Cheng's Garden design theory in Yuanye ($\ulcorner$원야$\Ircorner$에 나타난 계성의 원림조영이론 연구)

  • Ji Cheng''''s great work on garden design theory, the ''''Yuanye'''', written in 1631 and originally published in 1634 is the first surviving treatise and most famous and comprehensive work on the suvject in the Chinese tradition. He constructed Dongdiyuan in Changzhou about 1623, Wuyuan in Yizheng in 1631, and Yingyuan in Yangzhou about 1634. But no poems and paintings written by him still exist, and none of his known gardens has survived. Therefore his design philosophy is able to be interpreted only by his work, Yuanye. This study aims at investigating the garden design theory in Yuanye. The results were summarized as follows. 1) Yuanye reflected the garden tastes of literati, and Ji Cheng endeavored to express the deas of literati painting into gardens. 2) The essence of the garden design theory is Xingzao, and Yindi, following the existing lie of the land, and Jiejing, to borrow from the scenery, are two major activities of Xingzao. 3) Ji Cheng''''s design theory build up on the basis of recognizing the existence of masters. 4) Yindi is the environmental and ecological planning and design method. This is the activity to reach the state of artistry through suitability. 5) Jiejing is not merely borrowing the landscape but the making use of scenery around the garden. And only the master has the skill in fitting in with the form of the land. 6) Ji Cheng pursuits the garden which will look like something naturally created though manmade. It is the goal of the Chinese traditional gardens and ideal situation. 7) Ji Cheng aims to unify the environment and landscape design dialectically into Xingzao.
