Taegu is notorious as hot and dry summer among Korea cities. One of the most important goals of the open space planning is to ameliorate urban climate of the city. The objective of this research is to evaluate the thermal mitigation effect of the cool islands in Taegu metropolitan city. Cool islands of this paper includes parks and rivers surrounded by or adjacent to urbanized areas. Based on the analysis of the thermal band of Landsat TM at May 17, 1997, the thermal mitigation effect of open spaces in the city could be summarized as follows ; Kumho river showed the largest mitigation effect in terms of the width of mitigation zone and temperature difference. Evaporation from wide water surface and evapo-transpiration from riparian grass land could bring into results. Significant mitigation effect of parks covered with forest can be observed. The temperature range of such parks were between 19.05$^{\circ}C$ and 19.44$^{\circ}C$ However, the thermal mitigation effect of Dalsung park and Apsan park was insignificant. The small size and high percentage of hard paving of the former and the relative low density of the residential areas adjacent to the latter could be the main reason. In conclusion, the thermal mitigation effect in urban ope spaces could be detectedby the employment of thermal band data of Landsat TM and GIS buffering technique.
The study was to analysis the dispersion of the cooling water of Kori atomic power station using thermal infrared data. The dispersion pattern of the cooling water analysis clearly on the LANDSAT TM band 6. It was changed due to tidal current, that is, the cooling water disperses north-eastern direction during the low tide and southweatern direction during the high tide. The relative temperature distribution was mapped through the density slicing method on the images.
The main object of this study was to prove the effectiveness of different merging methods by using the high resolution IRS(Indian Remote Sensing Satellite)-1C panchromatic data and the multispectral Landsat TM data. The five methods used to merging the information contents of each of the satellite data were the intensity-hue-saturation(IHS), principal component analysis(PCA), high pass filter(HPF), ratio enhancement method and look-up-table(LUT) procedures. Two measures are used to evaluate the merging method. These measures include visual inspection and comparisons of the mean, standard deviation and root mean square error between merged image and original image data values of each band. The ratio enhancement method was well preserved the spectral characteristics of the data. From visual inspection, PCA method provide the best result, HPF next, ratio enhancement, IHS and LUT method the worst for the preservation of spatial resolution.
Processing techniques of remote sensed image data using computer have been recognized very necessary techniques to all social fields, such as, environmental observation, land cultivation, resource investigation, military trend grasp and agricultural product estimation, etc. Especially, accurate classification and analysis to remote sensed image da are important elements that can determine reliability of remote sensed image data processing systems, and many researches have been processed to improve these accuracy of classification and analysis. Traditionally, remote sensed image data processing systems have been processed 2 or 3 selected bands in multiple bands, in this time, their selection criterions are statistical separability or wavelength properties. But, it have be bring up the necessity of bands selection method by data distribution characteristics than traditional bands selection by wavelength properties or statistical separability. Because data sensing environments change from multispectral environments to hyperspectral environments. In this paper for efficient data classification in multispectral bands environment, a band feature extraction method using the Rough sets theory is proposed. First, we make a look up table from training data, and analyze the properties of experimental multispectral image data, then select the efficient band using indiscernibility relation of Rough set theory from analysis results. Proposed method is applied to LANDSAT TM data on 2 June 1992. From this, we show clustering trends that similar to traditional band selection results by wavelength properties, from this, we verify that can use the proposed method that centered on data properties to select the efficient bands, though data sensing environment change to hyperspectral band environments.

To improve thermal environments in urban area, the structural characteristic analysis of thermal environments of the certain area should be preceded to analyze and supplement its problems. With Landsat-8, we measured the centrality estimation, the distribution map, and the spatial statistical analysis of Daegu Metropolitan City in January and August, which of data applied in analyzing the structure of thermal environments following to its spatial property. The thermal infrared band of satellite images has been used to analyze the standard normal deviated scores, which extract the centrality, while the cluster map, based upon Local Local Moran's I, has composed for understanding the autocorrelation of local spatial within environment space structure. Understanding the distribution features as well as the pivot center of thermal environments with satellite images provides principle database for updating urban thermal environments' policies and plans; because those are reference materials that should have precedence over for diverse thermal environment policies.

In this paper, we propose features extraction method using Rough sets theory for efficient data classifications
in hyperspectral environment. First, analyze the properties of multispectral image data, then
select the most efficient bands using discemibility of Rough sets theory based on analysis results. The
proposed method is applied Landsat TM image data, from this, we verify the equivalence of traditional
bands selection method by band features and bands selection method using Rough sets theory that pmposed
in this paper. Finally, we present theoretical basis to features extraction in hyperspectral environment.

In this study the tidal area in Seo han bay, North Korea was detected and extracted by using various satellite images (ASTER, KOMPSAT EOC, Landsat TM/ETM+) and GIS spatial analysis. Especially, the micro-landform was classified through the spectral characteristic of each satellite image and the change of tidal flat size was detected on passing year. For this, the spectral characteristics of eight tidal flat area in Korea, which are called as Seo han bay, Gwang ryang bay, Hae iu bay, Gang hwa bay, A san bay, Garorim bay, Jul po bay and Soon chun bay, were analyzed by using multi band of multi spectral satellite images such as Landsat TM/ETM+. Moreover, the micro-landform tidal flat in Seo han bay, North Korea was extracted by using ISODATA clustering based on the result of spectral characteristic. In addition, in order to detect the change of tidal flat size on passing years, the ancient topography map (1918-1920) was constructed as GIS DB. Also, the tidal flat distribution map based on the temporal satellite images were constructed to detect the tidal flat size for recent years. Through this, the efficient band to classify the micro-landform and detect its boundary was clarified and one possibility of KOMPSAT EOC application could be also introduced by extracting the spatial information of tidal flat efficiently.

The study for detecting suspended sediment distribution in Lake Sihwa, which has a large surface area and coastal area, using remote sensing technique was carried out with development of satellite data collected since 1970. The research, however, analysis of spatial distribution and quantity, is not common in domestic study and useful algorithms have not been proposed. In this study, a suspended sediment algorithm was composed with in-situ data obtained in study area and remote sensing reflectance obtained in-water optical instrument, which has SeaWiFS wavelength bands. However, when the algorithm was applied to Landsat TM data, including an in-situ data set, and some problems arose. The composition of the algorithm which was structured with band difference and band ratio showed the correlation of $R^2$=0.7649 with concentration of suspended sediments. And, between calculated and observed concentration of suspended sediments there was a correlation of $R^2$=0.6959. However, remote sensing reflectance obtained from Landsat TM is not good for the estimation of concentration of suspended sediments, because of high concentration of chlorophyll and CDOM(colored dissolved organic matter).
In this study, surface temperature which was extracted from Landsat TM band 6 was compared and analyzed with the AWS(Automatic Weather System) observation data for studying urban heat environment properties with possibility of remote sensing data application. In order to verification of the distribution properties of urban surface temperature, correlation analysis between surface temperature and NDVI, the distribution properties of urban surface temperature by land use/cover patterns were carried out by GIS spatial analysis techniques. The results presented that the spatial distribution of urban surface temperature was very different depending on various land use/cover patterns of surrounding areas. Also there was the reverse linear relationship between surface temperature and NDVI. These results will be worked as one of the major factors for environmentally sustainable urban planning considering the characteristics of weather environments in the near future.
The urban thermal environment can be an important index to detect heat island phenomena and manage it to improve urban life quality. Cheongju is a typical plain-city that main part has been formed and developed in lowland. The Mushim stream crosses the city from south to north. We reviewed the use of thermal remote sensing in stream around areas and the thermal environments, focusing primarily on the Urban Heat Island(UHI) effect. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between the stream nearby urban area and the stream cooling effect of UHI. The objectives are to determine the usefulness of KOMPSAT-2 bands MS3 and MS4 for vegetation cover mapping, and the usefulness of LANDSAT TM band 6 in identifying thermal environmental characteristics and UHI. Land Surface Temperatures (LST) are retrieved by single-channel algorithm to study the UHI from the 6th band (thermal infrared band) of LANDSAT TM images and thermal radiance thermometer based on remote sensing method and the LST distribution maps are accomplished according to the retrieval results. There is also comparison of satellite-derived and in situ measured temperature. The results indicated that the LST of urban center is higher than that of suburban area, the temperature of mountain and water are the lowest area, so it is clearly proved that there are obvious UHI effects by stream. The surface temperature distribution of Mushim stream is detected $2^{\circ}C$ lower than urban area.
