  • This study investigates to detect Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and land cover change after tide embankment construction using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) Thermal Infrared (TIR) band data at Shihwa Lake and surrounding area. SST measurement is important for studies of both the structure of the ocean and as the thermal boundary between the ocean and the atmosphere. Since 1970s, the derivation of SST by satellite remote sensing (RS) has been applied to earth surface using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and Landsat TM. However, AVHRR has restriction in deriving SST in the area whose shoreline is complicated like western coast in South Korea because of coarse spatial resolution. The TIR band of TM images can be used to detect SST change whose shoreline is complicated and narrow like the study site. Thus, multi-temporal TM images were used for SST change detection in this study.

  • Climate change is known to affect both natural and managed ecosystems, and will likely impact on the terrestrail carbon balance. This paper reports the effects of climate change on spatial-temporal changes in carbon reductions in South Korea's during 2000-2100. Future carbon (C) stock distributions are simulated for the same period using various spatial data sets including land cover, net primary production(NPP) and leaf area index (LAI) obtained from MODIS(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), and climate data from Data Assimilation Office(DAO) and Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA). This study attempts to predict future NPP using multiple linear regression and to model dependence of soil respiration on soil temperature. Plants store large amounts of carbon during the growing periods. During 2030-2100, Carbon accumulation in vegetation was increased to $566{\sim}610gC/m^2$/year owing to climate change. On the other hand, soil respiration is a key ecosystem process that releases carbon from the soil in the form of carbon dioxide. The estimated soil respiration spatially ranged from $49gC/m^2$/year to $231gC/m^2$/year in the year of 2010, and correlating well with the reference value. This results include Spatial-Temporal C reduction variation caused by climate change. Therefore this results is more comprehensive than previous results. The uncertainty in this study is still large, but it can be reduced if a detailed map becomes available.

  • Extraction of region of interest for satellite image classification is one of the important techniques for efficient management of the national land space. However, recent studies on satellite image classification often depend on the information of the selected image in selecting the region of interest. This study propose an effective method of selecting the area of interest using the continuous digital topographic map constructed from high resolution images. The spatial information used in this research is based on the digital topographic map from 2013 to 2017 provided by the National Geographical Information Institute and the 2015 Sejong City land cover map provided by the Ministry of Environment. To verify the accuracy of the extracted area of interest, KOMPSAT-3A satellite images were used which taken on October 28, 2018 and July 7, 2018. The baseline samples for 2015 were extracted using the unchanged area of the continuous digital topographic map for 2013-2015 and the land cover map for 2015, and also extracted the baseline samples in 2018 using the unchanged area of the continuous digital topographic map for 2015-2017 and the land cover map for 2015. The redundant areas that occurred when merging continuous digital topographic maps and land cover maps were removed to prevent confusion of data. Finally, the checkpoints are generated within the region of interest, and the accuracy of the region of interest extracted from the K3A satellite images and the error matrix in 2015 and 2018 is shown, and the accuracy is approximately 93% and 72%, respectively. The accuracy of the region of interest can be used as a region of interest, and the misclassified region can be used as a reference for change detection.

  • Land surface temperature (LST) is an important factor in human health, thermal environment, heat balance, global change studies, and as control for climate change. The objective of this study was to assess the influence of Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effects on the LST and NDVI in Cheongju, Korea. The aim was to evaluate the effect of urban thermal environment for LST comparison of satellite-derived and in situ measured temperature. In this study, LANDSAT TM and KOMPSAT scene were used. The results indicated that the minimum LST is observed over dense forest as about $21{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ and maximum LST is observed over industrial area of about $28{\sim}32^{\circ}C$. The estimated LST showed that industrial area, bare soils and built-up areas exhibit higher surface temperatures, while forest, water bodies, agricultural croplands, and dense vegetations have lower surface temperatures during the summer daytime. Result corroborates the fact that LST over land use/land cover (LULC) types are greatly influenced by the amount of vegetation and water bodies present. The LST of industrial area and urban center is higher than that of suburban area, so it is clearly proved that there are obvious UHIE in Cheongju.

  • Using GIS and socio-economical data the relationship between human activities and global environmental change Is Analysed from the view point of food productivity and CO2 emission. Under the assumption that the population problem, the food problem and global warming due to energy consumption can be stabilized through managing land use, impacts of human activities such as consumption of food, energy and timber on global environment changes, and global population capacity are Analysed using developed system dynamics model in the research. In the model the world is divided into two groups: OECD countries and the others. Used global land use data set Is land cover map derived from satellite data, and potential distribution of arable land is estimated by the method of Clamor and Solomon which takes into consideration spatial distribution of climate data such as precipitation and evapotranspiration. In addition, impacts of CO2 emission from human activities on food production through global warming are included in the model as a feedback. The results of the analysis for BaU scenario and Toronto Conference scenario are similar to the results of existing models. From the result of this study, the human habitability in 2020 is 8 billion people, and CO2 emission in 2020 based on BaU Scenario and on Toronto Scenario is 1.7 and 1.2 times more than the 1986's respectively. Improving spatial resolution of the model by using global data to distribute the environmental variables and sauce-economical indices is left for further studies.

  • We investigated the change in land-use alteration in a 45 km × 45 km area around the Upo wetlands in 1920s(before the Japanese occupation period), 1950s(immediately Korean independence) and the period 1970s to 2000s. These data can guide in understanding surface environmental changes in the lower Nakdong River from the early 20th century to the present. The influence of the long-term decreasing trend of the wetland area at the Upo Swamp was evaluated using a high-resolution local circulation model. The cooling effect of the wetlands on surface air during the daytime in summer(e.g, early August) was approximately 2℃ greater in the 1920s than in the 2000s, which is attributed to wider water areas in the 1920s. Additionally, long-term changes in land use have caused changes in the convergence zone of local circulation wind.

  • Reforming land is an important foundation for benefit of society as well as national development. A correct investigation and information acquirement as to land must go first to establish land management and plan. Land investigation by remote sensing is one of the most reasonable methods that doesn't need lots of time and manpower. In this study, Image classification on land use from Landsat data was carried out, which were respectively in 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995 and 2000, covering southern Han river and then land use changes were detected. In addition, an available information was reported, which could be used in the control of southern Han river. As a result, there is an obvious change in land use, especially the increase of water and decrease of forest and agriculture. Those are caused by the industrialization and the construction of dam.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate temporal soil loss change according to long-term land cover changes using G1S and RS. Revised USLE(Universal Soil Loss Equation) factors were prepared by using point rainfall data, DEM(Digital Elevation Model), soil map and land cover map. During the past two decades, land cover changes were traced by using Landsat MSS and TM data. As a result, forest area in 2000 has decreased 25.3 $km^2$ compared with that in 1990. Soil loss has decreased 3751.2 tou/yr. On the other hand, upland area has increased 22.5 $km^2$. Soil loss of upland has increased 5395.4 to/yr. Therefore, soil loss in 2000 increased 6.3 kg/$m^2$/yr compared with that in 1990. This was mainly caused by the increased upland area.

  • This study examined the effective uses of an ecosystem service value assessment in the fields of rural planning and development through archiving and reviewing/analyzing existing concepts, evaluation methods and prior examples of Ecosystem services. Based on land cover analysis, this study evaluated the usability changes in the ecosystem service value for a period spanning 1975 to 2000. The results from the countrywide data survey (with an exception of Jeju island) showed a 33.15% decrease in ESV by 2000. The total ESV represented 5,385 million USD in 1975, and 3,600 million USD in 2000 of the study area. In addition, the ecosystem service value with a scale of metro cities and provinces was also examined. The ESV of most regions decreased by 2000, but Daejeon and Kyeongnam, and Kyeongbuk provinces increased. The trends of year to year changes in the ESV were very diverse throughout the country. Jeonnam showed the smallest decrease, 747 million USD, which is 59% of the ESV in 1975. Nevertheless, the despite the regional differences in available natural resources, the natural resource assets value is ultimately determined by rural development policies and regional economic attributes. Therefore, an ecosystem service must be considered as an important criterion for rural planning and development policy.

  • This paper deals with comparison of classification accuracy between three land cover classification results having difference in resolution and they were classified with eight classes including building, road, forest, etc. Airborne hyperspectral image used in this study was acquired at 1000m, 2000m, 3000m elevation and had 24 bands(0.5m spatial resolution), 48 bands(1.0m), 96 bands(1.5m). Assessment of classification accuracy showed that the classification using 48 bands hyperspectral image had outstanding result as compared with other images. For using hyperspectral image, it was verified that 1m spatial resolution image having 48 bands was appropriate to classify land cover and qualitative improvement is expected in thematic map creation using airborne hyperspectral image.
