  • A design method is proposed to optimize the stacking sequence of laminated composite plates for desired vibration characteristics. The objective functions are the natural frequencies of the laminated plates, and three types of optimization problems are studied where the fundamental frequency and the difference of two adjacent frequencies are maximized, and the difference between the target and actual frequencies is minimized. The design variables are a set of discrete values of fiber orientation angles with prescribed increment in the layers of the plates. The four lamination parameters are used to describe the bending property of a symmetrically laminated plate, and are optimized by a gradient method in the first stage. A new technique is introduced in the second stage to convert from the optimum four lamination parameters into the stacking sequence that is composed of the optimum fiber orientation angles of all the layers. Plates are divided into sub-domains composed of the small number of layers and designed sequentially from outer domains. For each domain, the optimum angles are determined by minimizing the errors between the optimum lamination parameters obtained in the first step and the parameters for all possible discrete stacking sequence designs. It is shown in numerical examples that this design method can provide with accurate optimum solutions for the stacking sequence of vibrating composite plates with various boundary conditions.

  • A Collaborative Optimization (CO) methodology for ring-stiffened composite material pressure hull of underwater vehicle is proposed. Structural stability and material strength are both examined. Lamination parameters of laminated plates are introduced to improve the optimization efficiency. Approximation models are established based on the Ellipsoidal Basis Function (EBF) neural network to replace the finite element analysis in layout optimizers. On the basis of a two-level optimization, the simultaneous structure material collaborative optimization for the pressure vessel is implemented. The optimal configuration of metal liner and frames and composite material is obtained with the comprehensive consideration of structure and material performances. The weight of the composite pressure hull decreases by 30.3% after optimization and the validation is carried out. Collaborative optimization based on the lamination parameters can optimize the composite pressure hull effectively, as well as provide a solution for low efficiency and non-convergence of direct optimization with design variables.

  • In this study, self-supporting roofing elements especially convenient for large-span structures such as stadium, airport terminal, mall, coliseum, etc. were examined with respect to critical buckling load. These elements were assumed as laminated composite plates and, variation of free-edge forms, cutout types and lamination configurations were used as design parameters. Based on the architectural feature and structural requirements, the effects of curvilinear free-edge form on critical buckling load were focused on in this research. Within this scope, 14 types of lamination configuration were specified according to various orientation angle, number and thickness of plies with a constant value of total plate thickness. Besides that, 6 different types of cutout and 3 different free-edge forms were determined. By combining all these parameters 294 different critical buckling load analyses were performed by using ANSYS Mechanical software based on finite element method. Effects of those parameters on critical buckling load were evaluated referring to the obtained results. According to the results presented here, it may be concluded that lamination conditions have more significant influence on the critical buckling load values than the other parameters. On the other hand, it is perceived that curvilinear free-edge forms explicitly undergo changings depending on lamination conditions. For future work, existence of delamination might be considered and progression of the defect could be investigated by using non-linear analysis.

  • In this paper, approximation and optimization methods are proposed for the structural performance of the composite fan blade. Using these methods, we perform the optimal design of the stacking sequence to maximize stiffnesses without changing the mass and the geometric shape of the composite fan blade. In this study, the lamination parameters are introduced to reduce the design variables and space. From the characteristics of lamination parameters, we generate response surface model having a high fitness value. Considering the requirements of the optimal stacking sequence, the multi-objective optimization problem is formulated. We apply the two-step optimization method that combines gradient-based method and genetic algorithm for efficient search of an optimal solution. Finally, the finite element analysis results of the initial and the optimized model are compared to validate the approximation and optimization methods based on the lamination parameters.

  • Hydrophilic monomers were polymerized for lamination on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane surface for hydrophilization of the membranes. Hydrophilization reduced the contact angle from $95^{\circ}$ to $55^{\circ}$ and enhanced the water flux by 10 times while it reduced the bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption amount to 1/4 level. Thermal polymerization process was optimized by examining several operation parameters. Dimethyl oxobuthyl acrylamide (DOAA) showed the best effect due to its better hydrophilicity than others. Increase of amount of monomer enhanced the performance until the optimum concentration of 30 wt%, beyond which excess amount of monomer resulted in homopolymerization to deteriorate the performance. Azobis (isobutyronitrile)(AIBN) initiator has greater activation temperature range than benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and it showed better hydrophilation performance. Two stage lamination process, application of initiator followed by monomer addition, was more effective than one stage process, addition of initiator and monomer at once, which still reduced the contact angle but also reduced the water flux by pore blocking phenomena.

  • In this study, we present a new efficient hybrid-mixed composite laminated curved beam element. The present element, which is based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle and the first-order shear deformation lamination theory, employs consistent stress parameters corresponding to cubic displacement polynomials with additional nodeless degrees in order to resolve the numerical difficulties due to the spurious constraints. The stress parameters are eliminated and the nodeless degrees are condensed out to obtain the ($6{\times}6$) element stiffness matrix. The present study also incorporates the straightforward prediction of interlaminar stresses from equilibrium equations. Several numerical examples confirm the superior behavior of the present composite laminated curved beam element.

  • The capacity of the drilling process in Multi-Layer PCB fabrication can be affected by various process parameters determining material flows in the unit operations. The ratio of mass-lamination to pin lamination and the number of stacks as the most critical paramaters, among them, were chosen on the basis of exhaustive field evaluation to study their effects on the capacity of the process. The best alternative condition for maximum capacity of the process was selected by simulation of process.

  • In this paper, element technologies such as soldering. arrangement and lamination processes for photovoltaic module manufacture were examined and described as main processes. Especially solder paste and temperature condition in soldering process, loss factor in arrangement process and process conditions in lamination process are investigated to minimize the electrical loss. As a results, temperature condition in soldering process was found to be critical to contact resistance of electrode and life-time. Productivity of the process decreases dramatically by physical damage during arrangement process. Pressure level and press condition of upper chamber in lamination process were important parameters for the reliability. According to the test result of photovoltaic module, electrical properties dropped about $5{\sim}25%$ after 5 years.
