  • A 1 MV A single phase high temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer was manufactured and tested. The rated voltages of primary and secondary of the HTS transformer are 22.9 kV and 6.6 kV respectively. BSCCO-2223 HTS tape was used for HTS windings of 1 MV A HTS transformer. In order to reduce AC loss generated in the HTS winding, the type of concentric arrangement winding was adopted to a 1 MV A HTS transformer. Single HTS tape for primary windings and 4 parallel HTS tapes for secondary windings were used considering the each rated current of the HTS transformer. A core of HTS transformer was fabricated as a shell type core made of laminated silicon steel plate. And a GFRP cryostat with a room temperature bore was also manufactured. The characteristic tests of 1 MV A HTS transformer were performed such as no load test, short circuit test and several insulation tests at 65 K using sub-cooled liquid nitrogen. From the results of tests, the validity of design of HTS transformer was ascertained.

  • A layerwise shear deformation theory is applied in this paper for buckling analysis of piezoelectric truncated conical shell. The core is a multiphase nanocomposite reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon fibers. The top and bottom face sheets are piezoelectric subjected to 3D electric field and external voltage. The Halpin-Tsai model is used for obtaining the effective moisture and temperature dependent material properties of the core. The proposed layerwise theory is based on Mindlin's first-order shear deformation theory in each layer and results for a laminated truncated conical shell with three layers considering the continuity boundary condition. Applying energy method, the coupled motion equations are derived and analyzed using differential quadrature method (DQM) for different boundary conditions. The influences of some parameters such as boundary conditions, CNTs weight percent, cone semi vertex angle, geometrical parameters, moisture and temperature changes and external voltage are investigated on the buckling load of the smart structure. The results show that enhancing the CNTs weight percent, the buckling load increases. Furthermore, increasing the moisture and temperature changes decreases the buckling load.

  • This note presents the main results of an experimental investigation into the mechanical behaviour of a composite sandwich conceived as a lightweight material for naval engineering applications. The sandwich structure is formed by a three-dimensional glass fibre/polymer matrix fabric with transverse piles interconnecting the skins; the core is filled with a polymer matrix/glass microspheres syntactic foam; additional Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastics extra-skins are laminated on the external facings of the filled fabric. The main features of the experimental tests on syntactic foam, skins and sandwich panels are presented and discussed, with focus on both in-plane and out-of-plane responses. This work is part of a broader research investigation aimed at a complete characterisation, both experimental and numerical, of the complex mechanical behaviour of this composite sandwich.

  • The paper describes the results of an experimental and numerical investigation into the structural and damage response of sandwich composites to low-velocity impact. Sandwich panels consisting of laminated composite skins with three different layups bonded to a PVC foam core were subjected to impact at various energy levels corresponding to barely visible impact damage (BVID) in the impacted skins. Damage assessment analyses were performed on the impacted panels to characterise the extent and the nature of the major failure mechanisms occurring in the skins. The data collected during the experimental analyses were finally used to assess the predictive capabilities of an FE tool recently developed by the authors for detailed simulation of impact damage in composite sandwich panels. Good agreement was observed between experimental results and model predictions in terms of structural response to impact, global extent of damage and typical features of individual damage mechanisms.

  • The electromagnetic engine valve actuator is a key technology to achieve variable valve timing in internal combustion engine and the steel core and clapper of the electromagnetic engine valve actuator are laminated to reduce the eddy current loss. To design and characterize the performance of the electromagnetic engine valve actuator, FE (finite element) analysis is the most effective way, but FE (finite element) 3-D modeling of real lamination needs very fine meshes resulting in countless meshes for modeling and numerous computations. In this paper, the equivalent FE 2-D model of electromagnetic engine valve actuator is introduced and FE analysis is performed using the equivalent FE 2-D model.

  • This paper presents results of experimental investigations on natural ester regarding the breakdown strength. Aging of insulating material in a pole transformer has been studied by performing accelerated thermal aging test. Sealed aging test vessels containing copper, laminated core, Krapt paper and insulating oil(Natural oil and Mineral oil) were aged at $140^{\circ}C$ for 30days. Compared to the conventional transformer oil, electric property of the natural ester fluid is excellent.

  • The electromagnetic noise generates when natural frequencies of a stator core with wingdings and frame coincide with or approach natural frequencies of the magnetic motive force. In order to suppress such noise, the estimation of natural frequencies of the motor is important at the design stage. However, the natural frequency analysis is not so easy because motor stator is in the laminated plate structure and windings are composed of wires, insulation sheets and vanishs. Thus the accurate prediction of the equivalent material properties of windings becomes an essential task. In this paper, we derive the equivalent material properties using homogenization methods.

  • Aging of transformer insulating material in natural ester insulating oil is compared to that in conventional transformer oil. Aging of insulating paper and insulating oil have been studied by performing accelerated thermal aging test. Sealed aging test vessels containing cooper, laminated core, Kraft paper and insulating oil(natural oil or mineral oil) were aged at $140^{\circ}C$ for 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 hours. Insulating oils after aging are investigated with total acid number, breakdown voltage and viscosity. Also, degradation of insulating paper after aging is determined using breakdown voltage and mechanical strength. Accelerated aging studies demonstrate a slower aging rate for natural ester insulating oil compared to the rate for conventional mineral oil.

  • A three node triangular element with drilling rotations incorporating improved higher-order zig-zag theory(HZZT) is developed to accurately assess the stress distribution through thickness of the laminated plate and analyze the vibration of pretwisted composite plates with embedded damping layer. Shear force matching conditions are enforced along the interfaces between the embedded damping patch and the border patch. The natural frequencies and model loss factors are calculated for cantilevered pretwisted composite blade with damping core with the present triangular element, and compared to experiments and MSC/NASTRAN using a layered combination of plate and solid elements.

  • Soft magnetic composite (SMC) material has recently received a significant attention in the area of high-speed machines because of its unique properties such as good design flexibility and low eddy current loss. However, SMC's electromagnetic property is poor compared to silicon steel in terms of saturation, relative permeability, and hysteresis loss. This paper presents a technique for utilization of SMC in two strategic designs of a switched reluctance machine (SRM) depending on a loss pattern. To investigate the effect of SMC's merits and demerits, the stator material is changed from laminated steel to SMC.
