  • For the damage tolerance improvement of conventional laminated composites, stitching process has been utilized for providing through-thickness reinforcements. 2D prefonl1S were stacked with S-2 glass plain weave, and 3D preforms were fabricated using the stitching process. For the matrix system, epoxy and phenol resins were considered. To examine the damage resistance performance the low velocity drop weight impact test has been carried out, and the impact damage was examined by scanning image. CAI (Compressive After Ih1paet) tests were also conducted to evaluate residual compressive strength. Compared with 2D epoxy composites, 2D phenol composites showed drastic reduction in the compressive strength prior to impact because of the higher contents of voids. The damage area of 2D phenol composites were also larger than that of 2D epoxy composites. However, by introducing the stitching, the damage area of 3D phenol composites was reduced by 60%, while the CAI strength improvement was negligible.

  • There is a big move to build zero-energy buildings in the form of passive houses that reduce energy waste worldwide. Korea has set a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 37% by 2030 through the activation of green buildings, such as strengthening the energy levels of new buildings and improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings. The use of insulation with high insulation performance is one of the key technologies to realize this, and vacuum insulation is the next generation insulation that blocks the energy flow of the building. In this study, we measured the bonding structure of dry and wet processing glass fiber core materials and compared the insulation performance of vacuum insulation panel. In addition, the insulation performance of vacuum insulation panel was measured according to the thickness of the laminated core. It can be confirmed that the lamination structure of the core and the lamination thickness are important factors for the heat insulating performance of the vacuum insulating panel.

  • The determination of the blast protection level and the corresponding minimum load-bearing capacity for a laminated glass (LG) window is of crucial importance for safety and security design purposes. In this paper, the focus is given to the window response under near-field blast loading, i.e., where relatively small explosives would be activated close to the target, representative of attack scenarios using small commercial drones. In general, the assessment of the load-bearing capacity of a window is based on complex and expensive experiments, which can be conducted for a small number of configurations. On the other hand, nowadays, validated numerical simulations tools based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) are available to partially substitute the physical tests for the assessment of the performance of various LG systems, especially for the far-field blast loading. However, very little literature is available on the LG window performance under near-field blast loads, which differs from far-field situations in two points: i) the duration of the load is very short, since the blast wavelength tends to increase with the distance and ii) the load distribution is not uniform over the window surface, as opposed to the almost plane wave configuration for far-field configurations. Therefore, the current study focuses on the performance assessment and structural behaviour of LG windows under near-field blasts. Typical behavioural trends are investigated, by taking into account possible relevant damage mechanisms in the LG window components, while size effects for target LG windows are also addressed under a multitude of blast loading configurations.

  • To prevent the low heating effect of heating system caused by the high sheet resistance of CVD graphene, multi-layered graphene was laminated to implement a Transparent plane heating system with good optical properties of low-resistance. Low-resistance plane heating system implemented by $300{\times}400{\times}5mm$ heating plane laminated multi-layered CVD graphene film and PWM control system to drive efficient power. A plane resistance value of $85.5{\Omega}/sq$ was measured on average for 4-layer CVD graphene film used as a heating plane. Thus, the transfer by thermal film as the method of implementing low-resistance CVD graphene is reasonable. The experimental results of heat test show that an average heat-rise rate in low-resistance, transperent plane heating system using CVD graphene is $10^{\circ}C/min$ and has an optical transmittance rate of 86.44%. Therefore, the proposed heating system is applicable to large window glass and vehicle heating window-shild-glass.

  • In this study, when the carbon fiber composite was manufactured, the correlation between the porosity and mechanical properties according to the number of glass fiber felts laminated together and the stacking sequence was confirmed. The carbon fiber composite was manufactured by stacking glass fiber felts, which are highly permeable materials, and using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). Porosity was measured by photographing the cross-section of the specimen with an optical microscope and then using porosity calculation code of MATLAB, and mechanical properties were measured for tensile strength, modulus by tensile test. Furthermore, Pearson correlation coefficient between porosity and mechanical properties was calculated to confirm the correlation between two variables. As a result, the number of glass fiber felt increased and the distance from the center of laminated composites increased, the porosity increasing were confirmed. In addition, tensile strength/modulus showed a weak positive correlation with porosity. Also, in order to confirm the effect of only porosity on tensile strength and modulus, mechanical properties calculated by CLPT (Classical Laminate Plate Theory) and experimental values were compared, and the difference in tensile strength showed a strong positive correlation with porosity and the difference in modulus showed a weak positive correlation with porosity.

  • This study aims to investigate the flexural behaviour of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminated hybrid fibre reinforced concrete (HFRC) beams. The flexural and ductility performance of GFRP laminated HFRC beams having different proportions of polyolefin and steel fibres with 1.0% of total volume fraction were investigated. The parameters of this investigation included: load and deflection at first crack, yield, and ultimate stages, ductility and crack width. A total of seven beams of $150{\times}250mm$ in cross-section were tested in the laboratory over an effective span of 2800 mm. One reinforced concrete (RC) beam without any internal or external GFRP was taken as the reference beam. Of the remaining six beams, one beam was strengthened with GFRP, one beam with 100% steel fibres was strengthened with GFRP and four beams, each with different volume proportions of polyolefin and steel fibres (20:80, 30:70, 40:60, 50:50) were strengthened with GFRP. All the above beams were tested until failure. The experimental results show that a fibre volume proportion of 40:60 (polyolefin-steel) has significantly improved the overall performance of the tested beams.

  • Steel plate or FRP materials have been typically used for the seismic retrofit of civil infrastructures. In order to overcome the limitation of each retrofitting material, a composite material, which takes advantages from both metal and fiber polymer materials, has been developed. In the study herein, the composite retrofitting material consists of metal part(steel or aluminum) and FRP sheet part(glass or carbon fiber). The metal part can enhance the ductility and the FRP part the ultimate strength. As a preliminary study to investigate the fundamental mechanical characteristics of the metal-FRP laminated composite material this study performed the flexural fracture test with various experimental variables including the number, the angle and the combination of FRP laminates. From the aluminum-FRP composite tests no great increase in flexural strength and flexural toughness were observed. However, flexural toughness of steel-FRP laminate composite was increased so that its behavior can be considered in the retrofit design. In addition, the angle and the kind of fibers should be carefully considered in conjunction with the expected loading conditions.

  • Control of the mechanical behavior of composite materials and structures under monotonic and dynamic loads for cracks and damage is a vast and complex area of research. The modeling of the different physical phenomena and behavior characteristics of a composite material during deformation play an important role in the structural design. Our study aims to analyze numerically the energy release rate parameter G of a composite laminated plate (glass or boron / epoxy) cross-ply [$+{\alpha}$, $-{\alpha}$] in the presence of a crack between two circular notches under the effect of several parameters such as fiber orientation ${\alpha}$, the crack orientation ${\beta}$, the orientation ${\gamma}$ of the two considered circular notches and the effect of mechanical properties. Our results show clearly that both notches orientation has more effect on G than the cracks and fibers orientations.

  • In this study, specimens were produced with a column member and a wooden gusset only by inserting an wooden gusset which is a substitute for steel plate into the center of a slit-processed column member. The moment resistance performance of the specimens was compared with that of control specimens that used a steel plate. The measured maximum moments of the specimens produced with GFRP-reinforced wooden laminated gussets and pins were lower by 24% on average compared to the steel plate-inserted specimens, but they showed good toughness. The fracture shape suggests that it was fractured along the annual rings between the pin and the end of the column member. The rigid specimen that integrated a laminated wood and a wooden laminated gusset with adhesive showed 2.8 times greater initial rigidity and 40% greater maximum moment on average compared to the control specimen. The rigid specimens mainly fractured on a glulam around glue line.
