A study on the grain size change, sedimentary facies and age indicator of volcanic tephra was analysis through four cores (P1 ~ P4) at the Ulleung Basin in the East Sea of Korea. The two cores (P1 and P2) were collected in the northeastern side of the Ulleung Basin (about 2,000 m in water depth), while the other two cores (P3 and P4) with the water depth of about 1,500 m and 1,700 m, respectively, were collected from the continental slope of the southwestern and western side of the Ulleung Basin. Four sedimentary facies and eight sedimentary subfacies were identified. The four facies were massive sand, bioturbated mud, homogeneous mud, and laminated mud. The eight subfacies were further divided as pumiceous ash massive sand, scorieaous massive sand, plain bioturbated mud, pyrite filamented bioturbated mud, distinctly laminated mud, indistinctly laminated mud, thinly laminated mud and homogeneous mud. The homogeneous mud was not found in the core of P3 which is located in the western side of Ulleung Basin (close to the Korean coast). In the case of laminated mud facies, the thinly laminated mud facies was dominated in the lower part of core sequences of the Ulleung Basin (P1 and P2), while the indistinctly laminated mud were overally distributed in the core sequences from the continental slope of Ulleung Basin. The Tephra layers from the core sequences of central Ulleung Basin were more dominated and distinctive than those from the core sequences of continental slope. This is related to the distance from the volcanic source and the amount of sediment supply. The core locations of Ulleung-Oki Tephra layers in the central Ulleung Basin were in the upper part of core sequences, while those in the continental slope were in the lower part of core sequences. This is indicated that the amounts of sediment supply in the continental slope after the Ulleung-Oki eruption were very high and different sedimentary environment between upper and lower of Tephra layer.
Macheon Layered Intrusion (MLI) which intruded into Precambrian gneiss complex of the northern Jirisan area, southeastern part of Youngnam (or Sobaeksan) Massif, is a layered mafic-ultramafic complex of Triassic age (ca. 223 Ma). The MLI is divided into Layered Series and Laminated Series. Layered Series is subdivided into Central Zone (Lower Zone) consisting of olivine gabbros and Peripheral Zone (Middle or Upper Zone) consisting of hornblende gabbros based on the type of cumulus texture and the main mafic phase. The Central Zone of Layered Series comprises thinly laminated olivine gabbros and uniform or thickly laminated coarse olivine gabbros which consist of mela-gabbro, troctolite, leuco-troctolite, and anorthositic rocks. Laminated Series is also subdivided into quartz-bearing biotite-pyroxene gabbros and homblende diorite and both have variable amount of interstitial quartz and microcline. Laminated series display moderately to slightly developed igneous lamination which is defined by the planar alignment of lath-shape plagioclases. Chilled margin of quartz-bearing biotite-pyroxene gabbro with surrounding Precambrian gneisses insists shallower intrusion of more felsic cognate magma evolved in the deep a little later. Rocks of Layered Series have orthocumulus to adcumulus olivine, adcumulus to intercumulus plagioclase, and intercumulus to heteradcumulus pyroxene and hornblende. Magmatic modally grading, folding, and cross-lamination are not rarely occurred in thinly layered rocks. These textural characteristics define main mechanisms of the formation of layered and laminated structure in mafic-ultramafic rocks of Macheon Layered Intrusion are gravity settling and in-situ crystallization associated with slumping and density current.
The bridge piers under service suffered a brittle failure due to the deterioration of lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcement without developing its flexural capacity or ductility. The earthquake induced lateral force results in tension which causes bond-slip failure at the lap-spliced region in circular bridge piers. In this case, such a brittle failure can be controlled by the seismic retrofit using FRP laminated circular tube. The retrofitted piers using FRP laminated circular tube showed significant improvement in seismic performance due to FRP's confinement effect. This paper presents the analytical results on the seismic strengthening effect of circular bridge piers with poor lap-splice details and strengthened with FRP laminated circular tube. FRP's confinement effect is predicted by the classical elasticity solution for the laminated circular tube manufactured with several layers. The FRP laminated circular tube induces the flexural failure instead of a bond-slip failure of the circular reinforced concrete piers under seismic induced lateral forces. To investigate the correctness and effectiveness of analytical solution derived in this study, the analytical results were compared with the experimental data and it was confirmed that the results were correlated well each other, The effects on the confinement of FRP laminated circular tube, such as the number of layers, the fiber orientations, and the mechanical properties, were investigated. From the parametric study, it was found that the number of layers, the fiber orientations, and the major Young's modulus (E11) of the FRP laminated circular tube were the dominant parameters affecting the confinement of reinforced concrete circular bridge piers.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the opacity and printing strength of MG paper overlaid plywood. The printing strength of ink on MG paper can be evaluated effectively by a formula $E^{*2}=[(L^{*})^{2}+(a^{*})^{2}+(b^{*})^{2}]^{1/2}$ that we proposed. Higher E value indicates good printing strength of ink-on-paper. We also assess the real color of translucent printed MG paper with a formula CIE ${\bigtriangleup}E^{*}$ (color difference between a pile of same paper to be opaque and fancy paper laminated board). In addition, the color difference on paper surface caused by the color of wood-based board (bottom) can be evaluated by a formula of Pc. No. Generally, an acceptable appearance quality of fancy boards is ${\bigtriangleup}E^{*}$ <2.0 and small Pc.No. value. The experimental results showed that Japan-made MG papers -J1, J2 and J3 have better printing strength and gloss than that of Taiwan-made paper (T1). The reason for this was that Taiwan-made paper has poor printing strength and low gloss, which might be correlated to the fiber compositions in paper. Higher printing strength can be seen for short fiber containing handsheets when comparing to that of handsheets. Nonetheless, low-freeness sheets gives better printing strength than that of high-freeness sheets. High-opacity MG paper gives good opacifying effect to the fancy paper laminated wood-based boards. Comparing the surface color of 2 kinds of fancy paper laminated boards, paperboard T1 laminated with high-opacity fancy paper showed slight color difference. The same results can be seen for $??g/m^{2}$ handsheets. Higher-opacity Acacia and Eucalyptus bleached sulfate pulps (short fiber) gives higher opacifying effect on the plywood when comparing to Northan pine and Radiata pine sulfate pulps(long fiber). The former ones also showed small color differences when comparing the color differences between the color of fancy paper and laminated paper board. Additionally, the color of bottom plywood can't be shown through for the high-opacify surface paper adhered to. Besides, the PC No of the base paper laminated board is small as well. Apparently, we can add colorants to the binders for the manufscture of various handsheets ($30g/m^{2}$) with various pulp mix ratios to increase the opacity of paperboards to certain extents. When we using yellow and brown binders in paper laminated board, the color difference between Acacia and Eucalyptus handsheets overlaid boards decreasing to 2.0 (acceptable ${\bigtriangleup}E^{*}$ <2.0, hard to discern), but not much improvement for Northern and Radiata pines. Definitely, show-through defects can be discernible for lower opacity papers. In general, admirable printing strength of fancy paper by which glued to plywood can be made with high-opacity paper and colored binders techniques.
By replacing the previous metal connector on the joints of timber structure, the GFRP reinforced laminated wooden pin was produced using a wooden material and Glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) composite laminate. In addition, using the reinforced wooden pin, the tensile type shear strength test was conducted. Based on the result of the bending strength test of the reinforced laminated wooden pin according to the GFRP arrangement, a specimen(Type-A) with a single insertion of GFRP for each layer have shown the most favorable performance. Also, it was verified that densified specimen hot pressed for an hour at the temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ and with the oppression pressure $1.96N/mm^2$ have shown the improved performance of 1.57 times than the specimen without the densification. And in the bending strength test considering the load direction, edgewise have shown a higher performance of 3.51 times than the flatwise. A shear strength test was conducted using the Type-A reinforced laminated wooden pin which have shown a moderate performance on the test. Based on the test conducted by differentiating the type of the joint plate and the connector, compared to the specimen(Type-DS) applied with the drift pin and steel plate, the specimen( Type-WL) applied with the GFRP reinforced laminated wooden pin and GFRP reinforced wooden laminated plate have shown 1.12 times higher shear strength and also have shown an excellent toughness even after the maximum load.
The stability behaviour of symmetrically laminated rectangular composite plates with loaded ends clamped and unloaded edges simply-supported, and subjected to uniform in-plane compression is investigated. A numerical and experimental investigation is presented in this contribution. The stacking sequence of the laminated glass/epoxy composite plates is symmetric about the middle surface and consists of 8-ply [0, 90, +45, -45]s lamination. Numerical predictions were obtained through the use of the finite element method. The above plates were modelled with 8-noded isoparametric layered shell elements. The effect of the input parameters such as the degree and forms of prescribed initial imperfection and the incremental step size required for incremental loading, on the convergence of the solution is thoroughly examined. Experimental results are presented for 10 test panels. All test panels were made from glass/epoxy unidirectional prepregs and have aspect ratio of 5.088. The laminate thicknesses were found to vary from 1.054 mm to 1.066 mm. Comparison of experimental data with predicted results show good correlation and give confidence in the finite element model.

This paper reported an experimental study on creep behaviors of PVB and Ionoplast laminated glass (LG) under load duration of 30 days. The tests were carried out in room temperature ($23^{\circ}C$). The study revealed that after sustaining loads for 30 days, the mid-span deflection of PVB LG increased by almost 102% compared with its short term deflection, while that of Ionoplast LG approximately increased by 14%; composite effects between two glass plies in PVB LG gradually reduced with time, but did not fully vanish at the 30th day; two glass plies in Ionoplast LG on the other hand was able to withstand loads as an effective composite section during the entire loading period; the creep behaviors of both LG were not finished yet at the 30th day. In addition to this, also studied was the varying of the bending stresses of PVB and Ionoplast LG under load duration of 2 hours. The tests were carried out in ambient temperatures of $30^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$ respectively. It was found that under a given load, although the bending stresses of both LG increased with increasing temperature, for PVB LG the increasing rate of the bending stress decreased with increasing temperature, while for Ionoplast LG the increasing rate of the bending stress increased with increasing temperature.
In this paper, fracture behavior of laminated composites with notch was studied by cohesive zone modeling approach. The numerical modeling proceeded by first generating 3 dimensional solid element meshes for notched laminated composite coupon configurations. Then cohesive elements representing failure modes of fiber fracture, matrix cracking and delamination were inserted between bulk elements in all regions where the corresponding failures were likely to occur. Next, progressive failure analyses were performed simulating uniaxial tensile tests. The numerical results were compared to those by experiment available in the literature for verification of the analysis approach. Finally, notched laminated composite configurations with selected stacking sequences were analyzed and the failure behavior was carefully examined focusing on the failure initiation and progression and the dominating failure modes.
In this study, the optimal location of the MR fluid segments in a partially treated laminated composite sandwich plate has been identified to maximize the natural frequencies and the loss factors. The finite element formulation is used to derive the governing differential equations of motion for a partially treated laminated composite sandwich plate embedded with MR fluid and rubber material as the core layer and laminated composite plate as the face layers. An optimization problem is formulated and solved by combining finite element analysis (FEA) and genetic algorithm (GA) to obtain the optimal locations to yield maximum natural frequency and loss factor corresponding to first five modes of flexural vibration of the sandwich plate with various combinations of weighting factors under various boundary conditions. The proposed methodology is validated by comparing the natural frequencies evaluated at optimal locations of MR fluid pockets identified through GA coupled with FEA and the experimental measurements. The converged results suggest that the optimal location of MR fluid pockets is strongly influenced not only by the boundary conditions and modes of vibrations but also by the objectives of maximization of natural frequency and loss factors either individually or combined. The optimal layout could be useful to apply the MR fluid pockets at critical components of large structure to realize more efficient and compact vibration control mechanism with variable damping.

This paper presents the surface discharge characteristics in Dry-Air on laminated epoxy solid dielectrics and conductive particles in order to provide the valuable information for the insulation design of eco- friendly gas insulated switchgear. To improve insulation performance, the three types of the laminated epoxy solid dielectrics were proposed, and it was revealed that their surface discharge characteristics were similar to the bakelite dielectrics of same-laminated types. From the surface discharge characteristics of dry air, it was demonstrated that the effect of conductive particles on surface discharge voltage was dominant when there are this particles at the shortest electrode gap and that the degradation of insulation performance on the conductive particles was evident in epoxy than teflon. These phenomena were interpreted in terms of particle-triggered discharge mechanism and electric field of triple junction, respectively.
