A Green's function approach is adopted for analyzing the thermoelastic deformations and stresses of a plate made of functionally graded materials(FGMs). The solution to the 3-dimensional unsteady temperature is obtained by using the laminate theory. The fundamental equations for thermoelastic problems are derived in terms of out-plane deformation and in-plane force, separately. The thermoelastic deformation and the stress distributions due to the bending and in-plane forces are analyzed by using a Green's function based on the Galerkin method. The eigenfunctions of the Galerkin Green's function for the thermoelastic deformation and the stress distributions are approximated in terms of a series of admissible functions that satisfy the homogeneous boundary conditions of the rectangular plate. Numerical analysis for a simply supported plate is carried out and effects of material properties on unsteady thermoclastic behaviors are discussed.
This paper presents the dynamic stability study of laminated composite plates with different force combinations and aspect ratios. Optimum non-diverging stacking is obtained for certain loading combination and aspect ratio. In addition, the stability force is maximized for a definite operating frequency. A dynamic version of the principle of virtual work for laminated composites is used to obtain force-frequency relation. Since dynamic stiffness governs the divergence or flutter, an efficient optimization method is necessary for the response functional and the relevant constraints. In this way, a model based on the ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm is proposed to search for the proper stacking. The ACO algorithm is used since it treats with large number of dynamic stability parameters. Governing equations are formulated using classic laminate theory (CLT) and von-Karman plate technique. Load-frequency relations are explicitly obtained for fundamental and secondary flutter modes of simply supported composite plate with arbitrary aspect ratio, stacking and boundary load, which are used in optimization process. Obtained results are compared with the finite element method results for validity and accuracy convince. Results revealed that the optimum stacking with stable dynamic response and maximum critical load is in angle-ply mode with almost near-unidirectional fiber orientations for fundamental flutter mode. In addition, short plates behave better than long plates in combined axial-shear load case regarding stable oscillation. The interaction of uniaxial and shear forces intensifies the instability in long plates than short ones which needs low-angle layup orientations to provide required dynamic stiffness. However, a combination of angle-ply and cross-ply stacking with a near-square aspect ratio is appropriate for the composite plate regarding secondary flutter mode.

A simplified method for determining the mode components of the strain energy release rate of free-edge delaminations in laminated composite is proposed. The interlaminar stresses are evaluated as an interface moment and interface shear forces that are obtained from the equilibrium equations at the interface between the adjacent layers. Deformation of an edge-delaminated laminate is calculated by using a generalized quasi-three dimensional classical laminated plate theory developed by the authors. The analysis provides closed-form expression for the three components of the strain energy release rate. Comparison of results with a finite element solution using the virtual crack closure technique shows good agreement. In the present study, laminated composite with stacking sequences of [30/-30/90]$_{s}$ were examined. The simple nature of the method makes it suitable for primary design analysis for the delaminations of laminated composite.e.
PURPOSES: Current theories for composite structures are too difficult for design engineers for construction. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate to the practicing engineers, how to apply the advanced composite materials theory to the road structures. METHODS: Some laminate orientations have decreasing values of $D_{16}$, $B_{16}$, $D_{26}$ and $B_{26}$ stiffnesses as the ply number increases. The plate aspect ratio considered is from 1 to 5. In order to study the effect of $M_x$ on the equilibrium equations, two cases are considered. $M_x$ term is considered or neglected. RESULTS: Most of the road structures have high aspect ratios, for such cases further simplification is possible by neglecting the effect of the longitudinal moment terms. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the road structures have plate aspect ratios higher than 2. It is concluded that, for all boundary conditions, neglecting the longitudinal moment($M_x$) terms is acceptable if the aspect ratio (a/b) is equal to or higher than 2. This conclusion gives good guide line for design of the road structures.

The differential quadrature (DQ) and teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO) methods are coupled to introduce a hybrid numerical method for maximizing fundamental natural frequency of laminated composite skew plates. The fiber(s) orientations are selected as design variable(s). The first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used to obtain the governing equations of the plate. The equations of motion and the related boundary conditions are discretized in space domain by employing the DQ method. The discretized equations are transferred from the time domain into the frequency domain to obtain the fundamental natural frequency. Then, the DQ solution is coupled with the TLBO method to find the maximum frequency of the plate and its related optimum stacking sequences of the laminate. Convergence and applicability of the proposed method are shown and the optimum fundamental frequency parameter of the plates with different skew angle, boundary conditions, number of layers and aspect ratio are obtained. The obtained results can be used as a benchmark for further studies.

In the manufacture of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite) composite structures, various independent components join by bolts and pins. Holes for bolts and pins have an effect on the failure strength of such structures, because those act as notches in structures. The failure characteristic of such structures are different from those of plain plate subject to remote load. In this paper, tensile properties of woven CFRP composite plates with laminates of $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ were obtained according to ASTM D 3039. By using obtained tensile failure strength and Tan-Cheng failure criterion, tensile failure strength of CFRP laminate with arbitrary fiber angle were evaluated. Also, the degradation of tensile properties by center hole(${\phi}10mm$) with a remote load was evaluated and the failure strengths were applied to Tan's failure criterion, similarly.
This paper deals with critical buckling load optimization of symmetric angle-ply laminated stepped flat columns under axial compression load. The design objective is the maximization of the critical buckling load and the design variable is the fiber orientations in the layers of the laminates. The classical laminate plate theory is used for the finite element solution of the laminated stepped flat columns. The modified feasible direction (MFD) method is used for the optimization routine. For this purpose, a program based on FORTRAN is exploited. Finally, the optimization results are presented for width ratios (b/B), ratios of fillet radius ($r_1/r_2$), aspect ratios (L/B) and boundary conditions. The results are presented in graphical and tabular forms and the results are compared.

This study describes ultrasonic reflection at a water/fiber reinforced polymer composite/water interface. Theoretical predictions of reflected beam amplitudes are also presented. Four different polymer composite laminates are investigated : T300/5208 graphite/epoxy $[0]_{31T},\;[45/90/-45/0]_{3S},\;[45/-45]_{2S}$, and S-2 glass/epoxy $[0/90]_{4S}$. The analytical leaky plate wave dispersion curves for the unidirectional laminate and other three laminates can be obtained by searching for the minimum magnitude of the reflection coefficient.

In this paper, the effects of temperature change on the impact of CFRP laminates was experimentally studied. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CFRP orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interfaces$[0_6^{\circ}/90_7^{\circ}]_s$ and four-interfaces$[0_3^{\circ}/90_6^{\circ}/0_3^{\circ}]_s$. The interrelations between the impact energy vs. delamination area, the impact energy vs. residual bending strength, and the interlayer delamination area vs. the decrease of the residual flexural strength of carbon fiber epoxy composite laminates subjected to FOD(Foreign Object Damage) under high temperatures were experimentally observed.

The simulation of Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) machining facilitates the selection of optimal cutting parameter for high machining efficiency and better surface quality. In this study, This paper proposes a dual-dexel model to represent the fiber laminate with computational geometry method to calculate the fiber length removed per revolution and fiber cutting angles. A flat end milling simulation software is developed in C# to simulate and display the CFRP milling process. During simulation, fiber lengths, fiber cutting angle and engaged cutting angle can be displayed in real-time. A CFRP plate with different angles in different layer is used to compare the simulation results.
