  • Sandwich panels with three different joint configurations were tested to design a novel sandwich joint structure that can effectively support both the tensile and compressive loads. The sandwich core was mainly aluminum flex honeycomb but the PMI foam core was limitedly applied to the ramp area which is transition part from sandwich to solid laminate. The face of sandwich panel was made of carbon fiber composite. For configuration 1, the composite flange and the sandwich panel were cocured. For configurations 2 and 3, an aluminum flange was fastened to the solid laminate by HI-LOK pins and adhesive. The average compressive failure loads of configurations 1, 2, and 3 were 295, 226, and 291 kN, respectively, and the average tensile failure loads were 47.3 (delamination), 83.7 (bolt failure), and 291 (fixture damage) kN, respectively. Considering the compressive failure loads only, both the configurations 1 and 3 showed good performance. However, the configuration 1 showed delamination in the corner of the composite flange under tension at early stage of loading. Therefore, it was confirmed that the structure that can effectively support tension and compressive loads at the same time is the configuration 3 which used a mechanically fastened aluminum flange so that there is no risk of delamination at the corner.

  • In this paper, a microstrip patch array antenna for a Doppler radar at 10.525GHz is desinged and fabricated. To be used for mobile radar system, the antenna is fabricated on a single layer laminate to resist a fire impact and is covered with the Teflon foam. To obtain the desired characteristics, the array antenna is designed 4$\times$8 array using a corporate 3-dB amplitude taper. Also, using square patch elements, the antenna can be converted to a circular polarized antenna later. The designed and fabricated array antenna has the reflection coefficient$({S_11})$ -53.498dB, the horizontal beam width of $10^{\circ}$, the vertical beam width of $18.8^{\circ}$, the gain of 21dBi, the bandwidth of 220MHz for VSWR<1.5 and a side lobe level of less than -17.5dB.

  • This paper describes the optimum design of bolt locations for metal joint parts of railway bogie frame made of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness satin woven laminate composite and PVC foam core. The optimum design analysis was done by sub-problem approximation method using Ansys Parameter Design Language(APDL). The sub-modeling method was introduced to conduct the detailed recalculation for the only target parts and reduce calculating time. The structural analysis for composite bogie frame was performed according to JIS E 4207. The results showed that the optimum design analysis using sub-modeling method was able to obtain faster and more precise results than that of the entire model by the control of mesh size for the target parts, and the maximum Von-Mises stress has been reduced in comparison with its original dimensions due to the optimum design of bolt locations.
