Tape cast laminar composites with alumina/zircon(reaction-bonded mullite/zirconia) as an inner layer and alumina/zirconia or mullite/zirconia as an outer layer have been fabricated by hot-pressing. The mechanical properties(hardness and Young's modulus) and microstructure of laminar composites were examined using a nanoindentation technique and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), respectively. The indentation load-displacement curve revealed the existence of residual stress in laminar composites.

The thermal properties of carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic ablative composites were investigated by measuring the heat capacity, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity. The heat capacities of carbon/ phenolic and silica/phenolic composites were calculated from differential scanning calorimeter curve. The thermal diffusivities of carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic composites were measured by the laser flash method with varying laminated direction, i.e., with laminar direction and across laminar direction. The thermal diffusivities decreased with increasing temperature. The thermal conductivities of carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic composites were calculated using the heat capacity, density and thermal diffusivity. The thermal conductivities increased with increasing temperature. The thermal conductivity of with laminar direction is two times higher than that of across-laminar direction in carbon/phenolic composite due to the directionality of thermal conductivity of carbon fiber. The thermal conductivities of two dimensional fiber reinforced composites were analyzed using the conductivities of constituents and volume fraction of each constituent. The thermal conductivities of carbon fiber and silica fiber were calculated from thermal conductivities of carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic composites. The thermal conductivities of carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic composites at RT were predicted from thermal conductivities of fiber and resin with varying the volume fraction of fiber.
Laminated glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites were applied to an insulating structure of a magnet system for a nuclear fusion device. Decreased inter-laminar strength by a strong repulsive force between coils which is induced a problem of structural integrity in laminated GFRPs. Therefore, it is important to investigate the inter-laminar characteristics of laminated GFRP composites in order to assure more reliable design and better structural integrity. Three types of the laminated GFRP composites using a high voltage insulating materials were fabricated according to each molding process. To evaluate the grade of the fabricated composites, mechanical tests, such as hardness, tensile and compressive tests, were carried out. The autoclave molding composites satisfied almost of the mechanical properties reguested at the G10 class standard, but the vacuum impregnation (VPI) and Prepreg composites did not.

The mechanical properties and failure behaviour of carbon/phenolic composites were inverstigated by tension and compression. Carbon/phenolic composites were fabricated by infiltration of matrix into 8 harness satin woven fabric of PAN-based carbon fibers. The tensile and compressive tests were performed at 25℃ under air atmosphere and, at 400℃ and 700℃ under N₂ atmosphere. The tensile strengths of carbon/phenolic composites in with-laminar/0° warp direction were about 10 times higher than those in with-laminar/45° warp direction, which was analyzed due to a change of fracture mode from fiber pull-out by shear to tensile fracture of fibers. The fracture of carbon/phenolic composites in with-laminar/45° direction was analyzed due to delamination by buckling. Tensile and compressive strength of carbon/phenolic composites decreased to about 50% at 400℃, and to about 10% at 700℃ compared to that at room temperature. The main reason for the decrease of tensile or compressive strength with increasing temperature was analyzed due to a reduction of bond strength between fibers and matrix resulting from thermal degradation of phenolic resin.
The effects of fiber composition factors of 14 geotextiles which are thickness, porosity, fiber length and diameter etc. on the transmissivity were examined and in-plane permeability of geotextiles under thickness change, transmissivity, confined load were analyzed by the constitutive equations. And the effects of laminar structure on the permittivity of laminar geotextile composites which were manufactured with fiber packing densities were assessed. Transmissivities were increased with thickness of geotextiles and in-plane permeability coefficients were increased with porosity and fiber diameter. The effects of porosity were decreased with normal stress and slightly increased with fiber length. Transmissivities were increased with fiber diameter and showed same tendensy for the same fiber length. Permittivities of laminar geotextile composites were influenced by the waterhead loss in the inner interface and the connection shape of these composites to water path was interpreted as bell mouth type or soft flux pipe type.

Hot-pressure sintered laminar composites with alumina/zirconia or mullite/zirconia as an outer layer and alumina/zircon (resulting in reaction-bonded mullite/zirconia during sintering) as an inner layer were fabricated by tape casting and lamination. Various forms of crack were observed in sintered laminar composites, these cracks included channel cracks in the outer layer, transverse cracks in the inner layer and interface cracks debonding interlayer. Based on detailed microscopic observations, the cracks were attributed to thermal expansion mismatch between the oxides consisting of the each layer. In particular, the interlayer and transverse cracks were confirmed in the laminates consisted of the mullite/zirconia system as the outer layers, however, those cracks were not observed in the alumina/zirconia system used. In addition, the crack propagation did not exhibit same behavior in the two kinds of outer layer when the indentation load was applied.
Fabrication of carbon fiber reinforced composites was carried out by hand lay-up method. Carbon nanofibers and SiC nanofibers were used as filler in the composites fabrication. Carbon nanofibers, one of the new carbon materials, have 5∼500 nm in diameter and 5-10 nm in length. SiC nanofibers were modified by silicon monoxide vapor with carbon nanofibers. The composites were carbonized at 1000$^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere, and then densified by molten pitches impregnated in vacuum. Multiple cycles of liquid pitch impregnation and carbonization were carried out to obtain a desired density. The composites were characterized by density, microstructure. The inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) test was performed for mechanical properties. For the new application, the microwave reflective proeprty of composites was investigated. Dielectric constant and permeability spectrum were measured in 12∼18 GHz frequency ranges. On the basis of the wave propagation theory in a lossy media, the reflection loss from the composite inter-layer was predict as a function of frequency.

The mechanical and thermal properties of spun carbon fabric/continuous carbon fabric interplay hybrid composite materials have been studied. The properties of the hybrid composites are compared with those of the continuous carbon fabric/phenolic composites and spun carbon fabric /phenolic composites. Through hybridization, tensile strength and flexural strength of hybrid composites were increased by about 17%, and 10%, respectively compared with spun carbon composites. The thermal conductivity of the hybrid composite is lower approximately 4~6% along the direction parallel to the laminar plane than that of the continuous carbon/phenolic composite.

Fabrication of a nano-laminar ceramic composite by sintering thin ceramic plates was examined. Silver-coated glass flakes with a thickness of less than $1{\mu}m$ were consolidated by pulsed current sintering or hotpressing to obtain model composites. The samples sintered at the optimum conditions were fairly dense, and the flakes were aligned by uniaxial press. The metal coating remained on the flakes through the sintering process, and became an interface layer between the flakes. No crack propagation through the transverse direction of the lamellar was observed in the indentation test. The possibilities of high resistance against crack propagation was suggested.
The lightweight industry continuously demands reliable near-net-shape fabrication where the preform just out-of-machine is close to the final shape. In this study, different half-finished preforms are made π-beams. Then the preforms are unfolded to make a 3D shape with integrated structure of fibers, providing easier handling in the further processing of composites. Several 3D textile preforms are made using weaving technique and are examined after resin infusion for mechanical properties such as inter-laminar shear strength, compressive strength and tensile strength. Considering that the time and labor are important parameters in modern production, 3D weaving technique reduces the manufacturing steps and therefore the costs, such as hand-lay up of textile layers, cutting, and converting into preform shape. Hence this 3D weaving technique offers many possibilities for new applications with efficient composite production.
