  • Between May 2006 and November 2009, we investigated the relationship between fluctuations in environmental factors and phytoplankton communities in Saemangeum Artificial Lake, South Korea. Nutrient concentrations in the lake increased because of the inflow of water from Mankyung and Dongjin Rivers during the summer rainy season; in particular, high concentrations were detected at an inner zone close to the estuaries. During the summer rainy season, salinity at the inner zone reduced more rapidly than that at the other zones, and it was similar to the changes in nutrient concentrations. Variations in phytoplankton communities were caused by fluctuations in environmental factors: the abundance of phytoplankton at the inner zone was higher than that at the other zones. Diatoms were the dominant species in the phytoplankton communities. A small centric diatom, Skeletonema costatum like species, was predominant, with a mean abundance of 19.5% in Saemangeum lake. Because of accelerated eutrophication in the lake, phytoplankton abundance increased continuously and the total number of species present in the community decreased. In particular, some dinoflagellates could intermittently cause red tides during low temperature and salinity conditions (at the inner zone). In 2006~2007, a red tide-forming dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum minimum, was the predominant species, while Heterocapsa triquetra, Karlodinium veneficum, and Heterocapsa rotundata were the newly recorded species in late 2008 to early 2009. Therefore, the dynamics of phytoplankton communities under the perennially eutrophic conditions in Saemangeum lake appear to be primarily affected by changes in water temperature and salinity. In particular, the growth of harmful algae may have been accelerated by the low salinity and temperature conditions during the spring season at the inner zone.

  • BACKGROUND: Eutrophication occurs occasionally in reservoirs around lake in summer and early autumn. Lakeside macrophyte which is one of internal pollutants effects on water quality when it is submerged during rainy season. To improve water quality of water supply source in Boknae reservoir around Juam lake, characteristics of nutrient(N, P) uptake and release by submerged plants were investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS: In order to establish the management plan of submerged plants in Boknae reservoir around Juam lake, water level, rainfall, flooding and non-flooding areas, biomass of dominant plants, contents of nitrogen and phosphorus were investigated during 7 months(August, 2010 through February, 2011). Dominant plants were Miscanthus sacchariflorus(MISSA) and Carex dimorpholepis(CRXDM) in Boknae reservoir. Total plant area of Boknae reservoir in August, 2010 was 987,872 $m^2$. In Boknae reservoir, flooding occurred from August until February caused by rainfall during rainy season. The total amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus uptakes by MISSA were 247 and 22 kg/total reservoir area, respectively. By CRXDM, the total amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus uptakes were 11,340 and 1,231 kg/total reservoir area, respectively. The total amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus residues by MISSA were 34 and 11 kg/total reservoir area, respectively. By CRXDM, the total amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus residues were 491 and 68 kg/total reservoir area, respectively. CONCLUSION(S): Total amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus releases in Boknae reservoir were 12,212 and 1,324 kg/total reservoir area, respectively. The results demonstrate that total nitrogen and total phosphorus in water were strongly influenced by submerged plants. Therefore, management plan for submerged plants during rainy season will be needed to improve water quality of water supply source in Boknae reservoir around Juam lake.

  • The objective of this was to determine how the seasonal intensive rainfall influenced the water quality, and to analyze the long-term temporal trend of water chemistry and spatial heterogeneity in the upstream watershed of Southern Han River using water quality dataset from 1997 to 2007. The largest seasonal variability in most parameters occurred during the two month July and August and there were closely associated with a large spate of summer monsoon rain. Total phosphorus (TP), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and suspended solids (SS) were greater during summer than any other seasons, and had a direct correlation with precipitation (r>0.4, p<0.01, n-120). In addition, dissolved oxygen (DO) had and inverse function with precipitation (r=-0.542, p<0.01). Overall, the data of total phosphorus (TP) and suspended solids (SS) showed that water quality was worst in Site I1, compared to the others. This was due to continuous effluents from the highlands' fields and cattle farms within the upstream area of Doam lake (Song stream). Based on the overall dataset, an efficient water quality management is required in the highlands and farms areas for better water quality with precipitation (r.0.4, p<0.01, n=120).

  • For efficient water quality management of Saemangeum lake, it is very important to accurately analyze discharged load characteristics using investigated pollution sources data from Saemangeum watershed. Investigation of pollution sources was conducted from 2003 to 2007. In this study, pollution sources are largely classified into human population, livestock, industry, and land use. Discharged loads of BOD, T-N and T-P from classified pollution sources were calculated by Korea TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) technical guideline. The calculated results showed that the major sources of BOD and T-N were land use, human population, livestock, and industry in order. However, the major sources of T-P were livestock, land use, human population, and industry in order. Our results clearly show that pollution sources of the priority management for water quality enhancement in the Saemangeum lake has represented land use and livestock.

  • Model parameters of the WASP4 applied to Lake Paldang were estimated. The methodology is based on grouping water quality constituents and relevant parameters and successively estimating each group of parameters by a trial-and-error procedure. Chlorophyll a, nitrogen cycles, phosphorus cycles, BOD and DO were simulated at the complexity level 4. A water budget analysis using the monthly records of reservoir inflows and outflows in 1989 and 1990 was made to determine seasonally-averaged flowrates at model boundaries. Estimated flowrates were used, together with the seasonal average of water quality measurements in 1989 and 1990 for the calibration and verification, respectively, of the model. Grouping water quality constituents and associated parameters proved to be efficient in estimating a number of model parameters. From the results of model calibration and verification, it was found that quantitative evaluations of nonpoint and benthic sources of organic matters are essential. Benthic sources near the entrance of the Kyeongancheon were the most significant.

  • In this study, WASP6 was used to predict the water quality of the reservoir and the lake. This can help the managers make the right choice of water quality policy. The results through studying are below. Raw pollutant load caused by the tourists in pollutant load of the study area takes 91.66% and 92.75% in total amount T-N, T-P. It showed high value when compared to raw pollutant load by land and stock farm and it seems that the main contamination is the population of tourists. From the result of the prediction model, BOD will increase about 1.5 times, T-N and T-P will be 1.5 times in 2012. It means that some counter plan is needed to reduce pollutant load. Enviroment grade of Suokjeong reserver is in I~II grade which is in good condition comparatively. However, the water contamination will be in poor as the year passes. when considering T-N T-P, which are the nutrients to control eutrophication, the concentrated administration about contamination sources is in urgent.

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of water quality and heavy metals in Shihwa Lake, concentration comparisons according to land use types and mass discharge through streams were carried out. Based on classification for streams according to land use types, the concentration of DO, SS, POC, $NO_3$ and Chl-a showed higher concentrations in agricultural areas than in industrial and urban areas. However, COD, DIN, DIP, TN, TP, DOC, TOC and heavy metal concentrations showed relatively high values in industrial areas. The concentrations of water qualities and heavy metals were relatively high in March to May and the concentration decreased in summer seasons (July-August). The averages of stream discharges of water qualities were 1,172 kg/d for SS, 151 kg/d for TN, 11.1 kg/d for TP and 389 kg/d for TOC, respectively. The agricultural area, Jangjunbo(S8), accounted for 47.5%(TP)~75.1%(SS) in the total stream discharges. Cu, Zn and Cd in stream waters were found to be more than 92% of the total discharges in industrial area, showing descending order of Zn>Cu>Ni>Pb>Co>Cd.

  • At weekly intervals, we monitored continuous changes in water quality by constructed floating wetland equipped with the four different filter media (sponge, volcanic stone, activated carbon and magnesium hydroxide) in a eutrophic lake from March 2011 to May 2012. We also investigated phyto- and zooplankton communities both in the influent and the effluent water through the floating wetland. Over a 10-month time period, average turbidity (66%), suspended solids (79%) and chlorophyll-a (80%) concentrations were remarkably reduced in the effluent water compared to the influent (P<0.001). The average removal rates of $NO_2-N$ and $NH_3-N$ were 24% and 20%, respectively (P<0.05). The average removal rates of $NO_3-N$ and TN were less than 10% (P>0.05). On the other hand, the average removal rates of $PO_4-P$ and TP were more than 65% (P<0.01). Interestingly, the abundance of phytoplankton in the effluent was decreased about 2.6 times compared to that of the influent, whereas the abundance of zooplankton in the effluent was increased about 3.5 times compared to that of the influent. Overall, particulate matters (SS, Chl-a and TP) and dissolved nutrients ($NO_2-N$, $NH_3-N$ and $PO_4-P$) were particularly reduced at high rates. Therefore, application of our constructed floating wetland in a eutrophic lake improved the water quality and demonstrated a potential for algal bloom mitigation.

  • In this research, we have selected the regions of Naerin river and Inbuk river where agricultural activities are actively carried out in the upper Soyang Reservoir and we have observed the changes of water quality while raining after finding out the characteristics of the outflow of floating materials by measuring the water quantity and water quality in division of rainy season and non-rainy season for those floating materials of generating pollutions of turbidity and malnutrition of the water for 4 year from 2002 to 2005. Results of the observation showed that the outflow of floating materials is significantly affected by the surface outflow of rain water, in particular, the surface outflow was great in June -August period of flood seasons.

  • From 2000 to 2004, the research was carried out at Naerin-cheon and Inbook-cheon, the upper streams of Soyang Lake, to study the relationship between precipitation and eutrophication-causing water pollutants, BOD, T-N and T-P. During the five years, the amount of flowing water was measured, and the water quantity was examined under different precipitation levels. From the observation, outflow patterns of the water pollutants and changes in the water quality factors at the time of rainfall were clarified. In addition, estimation of the unit load was made for each stream; for Naerin-cheon at the time of rainfall, we estimated BOD to be $1,112kg/km^2/year$, T-N to be $2,077kg/km^2/year$, and T-P to be $223kg/km^2/year$; for Inbook-cheon at the time of rainfall, we estimated BOD to be $1,229kg/km^2/year$, T-N to be $1,565kg/km^2/year$, and T-P to be $255kg/km^2/year$. For the time of no rainfall different estimation was made; for Naerin-cheon, we estimated BOD to be $2,403g/km^2/day$, T-N to be $5,004g/km^2/day$, and T-P to be $53g/km^2/day$; and for Inbook-cheon, we estimated BOD to be $1,550g/km^2/day$, T-N to be $2,283g/km^2/day$, and T-P to be $42g/km^2/day$.
