  • In this study, we examined the patterns of local circulation over the Daechung lake area through the numerical experiment designed to investigate the impact of lake on the local circulation. The results of numerical experiment showed that the surface temperature predicted by WRF model was lower than the observation, while the wind speed was stronger than the observation. The local circulation over the lake area was characterized by a lake breeze induced by a horizontal thermal contrast between the lake surface and the Surrounding land. At Daecheong Lake, a lake breeze formed at 09 LST and dissipated at 18 LST, with maximum intensity at 15 LST. The vertical extent of the simulated circulation was about 1,200 m. The specific humidity increased as the humid air above the lake moved landward due to the daytime circulation of the lake breeze. The numerical experiments of sensitivity to existence of the lake showed that the simulated surface temperature decreased in the experiment with the lake. Wind speed was more intense around the lake area when the actual land use was substituted by grassland land use. The results of numerical experiments suggest that the lake-induced lake breeze circulation has an effect on the meteorology of planetary boundary layer around the lake.

  • CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) is promising medium access control schemes for underwater acoustic sensor networks because of its robustness against frequency-selective fading and high frequency-reuse efficiency. In this paper, we design diversity schemes of underwater CDMA transceiver for the forward and reverse links. User data are multiplexed by Walsh code and a pseudo random noise code acquisition process is added for phase error correction before decoding the user data at the receiver. Then, the diversity reception using equal gain combining and maximal ratio combining is performed in order to minimize performance degradation caused by rich multipath fading of underwater acoustic channel. We evaluated the performance of diversity transceiver through lake experiment, which was performed at Lake Kyungcheon, Mungyeong city using two transmitters and two receivers placed 460 m apart at an average depth of 40 m. The lake experiment results show that user data are recovered with error-free in both of the forward and reverse links.

  • Code division multiple access (CDMA) is one of the promising medium access control (MAC) schemes for underwater acoustic sensor networks because of its robustness against frequency-selective fading and high frequency-reuse efficiency. As a way of performance evaluation, sea or lake experiment has been employed along with computer simulation.. In this study, we design the underwater CDMA forward-link transceiver and evaluate the feasibility aginst harsh underwater acoustic channel in water-tank first. Then, based on the water-tank experiment results, we improved the transceiver and showed the improvements in a lake experiment. A pseudo random noise code acquisition process is added for phase error correction before decoding the user data by means of a Walsh code in the receiver. Interleaving and convolutional channel coding scheme are also used for performance improvement. Experimental results show that the multiplexed data is recovered by means of demultiplexing at receivers with error-free in case of two users while with less than 15% bit error rate in case of three and four users.

  • This study aims to investigate the settling velocity of aggregates of cohesive sediment (floc) and its relationship with sediment size, density and fractal dimension. A system of commercial camera and macro-lens is used for the experiment. Through the image-analysis technique, the image taken by the camera system is analyzed. For the experiment, kaolinite and a natural sediment sampled at Lake Apopka in Florida have been tested. From this study, it is known that kaolinite and Lake Apopka sediments show different behaviors mainly depending on the organic matter content. Samples of kaolinite with less organic contents show a more definite trend to follow a fractal theory and relatively strong relationships between the settling velocity, density, fractal dimension and floc size compared to the Lake Apopka sediments rich in organics.

  • The present work provides a result from the preliminary experiment for hydrocyclone technology. In this work, local lake sediments and waste coal fly ash were used as test samples, prior to the application of hydrocyclone technology to the waste sludge thickening. A few cyclones based on the Rietema standard geometry were prepared. Chemical analysis of the sediments showed that more organic contaminants were in smaller particles. The experimental tests further showed that physical characteristics of particles, configuration of the cyclone and operation condition would affect the separation efficiency. The current results showed that small size cyclones might improve the separation and concentration of the lake sediments, and higher inlet velocity would increase the concentration rate of under flow and absolute concentration of sediment particles.

  • Sustainable water resource management requires the assessment of hydrological variability in response to climate fluctuations and anthropogenic activities. Determining quantitative estimates of water balance and total basin discharge are of utmost importance to understand the variations within a basin. Hard-to-reach areas with few infrastructures, coupled with lengthy administrative procedures makes in-situ data collection and water management processes very difficult and unreliable. In this study, the hydrological behavior of Lake Chad whose extent, extreme climatic and environmental conditions make it difficult to collect field observations was examined. During a 10 year period [January 2003 to December 2013], dataset from space-borne and global hydrological models observations were analyzed. Terrestial water storage (TWS) data retrieved from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), lake level variations from Satellite altimetry, water fluxes and soil moisture from Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) were used for this study. Furthermore, we combined altimetry lake volume with TWS over the lake drainage basin to estimate groundwater and soil moisture variations. This will be validated with groundwater estimates from WaterGAP Global Hydrology Model (WGHM) outputs. TWS showed similar variation patterns Lake water level as expected. The TWS in the basin area is governed by the lake's surface water. As expected, rainfall from GLDAS precedes GRACE TWS with a phase lag of about 1 month. Estimates of groundwater and soil moisture content volume changes derived by combining altimetric Lake Volume with TWS over the drainage basin are ongoing. Results obtained shall be compared with WaterGap Hydrology Model (WGHM) groundwater estimate outputs.

  • Effects of the design flood share of the Kyeongpo retarding basin, which has a function for flood control of the Kyeongpo river assigned to the Kyeongpo prickly water lily wetland, on the Kyeongpo lake and the downstream of Kyeongpo river were analyzed on the bassis of the hydraulic experiments and the numerical simulations using RMA-2 model. Reproducing a complex water flow system of the area of Kyeongpo lake, the unsteady flow simulations were performed. The data obtained in hydraulic experiments were used to determine parameters of the numerical model which simulated the flows for various flood scenarios in the downstream area of Kyeongpo river. With increasing the design flood share rates in the retarding basin, the water level was increased in the lake and is decreased in the river. The characteristics of flood flow interaction between Kyeongpo river and Kyeongpo lake were understood. These results may be used to management the Kyeongpo lake during flood season.

  • Soils in agricultural lands contain large amount of organic matter and nutrients due to the injected fertilizers and manure. During heavy rain, surface water and base runoff pollutants flows into a nearby stream or lake with eroded soil from agricultural lands. On the other hands, agricultural lands near the lake are inundated due to the increase of the water level in the lake, leading to organic matter and nutrient release from the inundated soil. In this study, releasing rates of nutrient salts and organic substances were analyzed for the soil in the agricultural land, where cultivation activities has been carried out and periodically flooded, to account for the possibility of contamination from the inundated agricultural land in reservoir areas The experiment results have shown that COD was released from the soil in anaerobic conditions, and T-P was released in both anaerobic and aerobic conditions. However, in the case of T-N, it was found that the runoff by soil was not made before the rainfall occurred, and when the soil was impound due to rainfall, the elution occurred under the aerobic conditions. Through the results of this study, it was possible to account for the effect of flooded agricultural lands on the water quality in the lake, and this could be reflected in an efficient agricultural non-point pollution management policy. In order to determine the precise releasing rate for each agricultural land, it is believed that the leaching experiment for paddy fields and grasslands are needed.

  • The sediment of Shihwa Lake contains an abundant quantity of cohesive sediments. The transport processes of the cohesive sediments are complex and difficult to predict, quantitatively. The cohesive sediments are the primary reason for the pollution of the environment and water quality in the coastal region. In this study, a column test has been performed. In order to quantify the settling velocities of sediment from Shihwa Lake, an experiment was conducted using a specially designed 1.8m tall settling column. A series of settling tests and physico-chemical property tests on Shihwa Lake cohesive sediments has been conducted to investigate the correlation between settling properties and their physico-chemical properties, which are represented as grain size distribution, mineralogical composition, and percentage oj organic contents. Experimental results of physico-chemical property tests show that Shihwa Lake sediments are relatively large in average grain $size(74\mu m)$ contain very small organic $material(6\%)$, and are dominantly composed of Quarts, which has relatively low cohesion. Thus, Shihwa Lake sediments might be specified as those whose settling properties are more influenced by gravity than cohesion. It is concluded that the magnitude of settling velocities of muddy sediments can be quite different, regionally, and it implies that field or laboratory experiments for settling velocity measurement should be preceded over the numerical modeling of muddy sediment transport, in order to obtain the reliable prediction results for a given specific site.

  • This paper estimated communication parameters according to underwater channel environment of lake for underwater acoustic communication. This paper calculated coherence time and coherence bandwidth through two experiments in actual lake environments. In both experiments, the chirp signal for channel estimation and the BPSK (Binary Phase Shift Keying) signal for calculating the bit error rate were transmitted. In each experiment, the distance between transmitter and receiver was 300 m to 400 m, and 500 m to 600 m. The coherence times calculated in experiment 1 and experiment 2 are 175 msec and 340 msec, and the coherence bandwidths are 10 Hz and 5.71 Hz, respectively. It is confirmed that the experimental results are more appropriate because the synchronization and the bit error rate performance are better only when the length of the synchronization signal and the interval of the pilot signal in the frame are shorter than the coherence time.
