  • Larvae of Palaemon serrifer were reared in the laboratory under three different temperature regimes ($15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$) to study the effects of rearing temperature on larval survival and growth, as well as other traits such as embryo volume, number of embryos (fecundity), incubation period, development. Mode and development period. Growth pattern was analyzed by measuring the molt increment and intermolt period. The intermolt period consistently increased with size and instar number and was shortest at $25^{\circ}C$. However, molt increments generally decreased with instar number. Number of embryos varied from 552 to 1355. The relationship between the number of embryos and carapace length was expressed by the equation (fecundity) y=2.7744x+0.208 ($R^2$=0.7961). Egg volume was a primary factor affecting other life-history traits. Egg volume was $0.078\;m^3$, which is relatively small thus embryos exhibited a relatively short incubation period and a comparatively short development period, and the nutritional mode was planktotrophic. Brood production was followed by a fast parturitional pattern. Most ovigerous females had mature ovaries when the parturial molt occurred soon after eclosion.

  • The zoea1 stages of Philyra kanekoi Sakai, 1934 were obtained by laboratory rearing. Three zoeal stages were described and illustrated in detail. Zoeal morphology was compared with those of other described species of the family Leucosiidae. Morphological comparisons with congeneric species revealed that zoeas of P. kanekoi were more similar to those of P. pisum and P. platychira than to other Philyra. The present material could be distinguished from other Philyrinae species by having no dorsal carapace spine, a spinous tip of the antenna, and no chromatophore on the base of a dorsal carapace spine. Within the family Leucosiidae, the zoeas of three Philyra (P. kanekoi, P. pisum and P. platychira) showed the greatest affinities with Leucosia sima and L. pubescens (Leucosiinae), and the number of setae on the basipod of the first maxilliped could be very useful characterisitcs for indentification between Philyra and Leucosia zoeas.

  • In order to study the feasibility of utilizing bivoltine foundation cross (FC2) males of the silkworm as male components with Pure Mysore (PM), six foundation crosses viz,CSR2 x CSR27, CSR27 x CSR2, CSR27 x CSR50, CSR50 x CSR27, CSR2 x CSR50 and CSR50 x CSR2 along with CSR2 pure breed were assessed for performance of parental crop, grainage, rearing and reeling performance. The foundation crosses exhibited better performance than CSR2 as a parental crop and male component which resulted in higher egg recovery. Though there was not much difference between PM crossed with FC2 and CSR2 males pertaining to important bioassay parameters, PM x CSR2 exhibited superiority in reeling traits particularly with reelability and raw silk %. This study reveals that FC2 seed cocoons can be utilized during exigency when there is a dearth for CSR2 seed cocoons but not regularly.

  • Molipteryx fuliginosa (Uhler, 1860) is a plant juice sucker which feeds on new tips of Rubus oldhami Miquel and Zelkowa serrata Makino, and it has a strong preference for teses two plants in Korea. M. fuliginosa has one generation a year and hibernates as a young adult. Most of the winter survivors emerge in early May. It is the first time their host plants were found and reported. Females mainly lay their eggs one by one separately on the leaves of R. oldhami, and even on the steel wire, the lid guaze and the ground in the laboratory. Nymphs do not gather, but stay on the hatching site, Nymphs except the non-feeding first instar feed on young shoots. From the second to the fifth instar nymphs migrate to the upper part of the shoot and congregate in part on an expanded leaf. The new adults first appeared on 11 August, and remained in the host plant, and fed on until mid October. The duration of the hatching and molting, and the survivorship curve based on the laboratory rearing were determined.

  • Ten numbers of plants, based on their medicinal value, were used to test their efficacy against virosis (caused by cytoplassmic polyhedrosis virus) in tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta Drury. in indoor rearing conditions. The aqueous extracts of leaf of Azadirichita indica (neem), Acharanthus aspera, Psoralea corylifolia, Asparagus racemosus, Adhatoda zelanica (Basak), Andrographis paniculata (Kalmegh), Moringa oilephera (sahjan), whole plant of Phyllanthus urinaria (Bhuiamla), Centella asiatica (Veng sag) and Curcuma longa (Haldi powder) in different concentrations were used for containment of virosis in silkworm larvae. The tasar silkworm larvae were orally inoculated with PIBs ($1\times10^6$) of AmCPV in $2^{nd}$ instar and treated with plant extracts in each instar ($2^{rd}$ instar onwards). The mortality due to virosis was recorded during larval period. The plant extracts, irrespective of their concentrations, were found effective in suppressing the virosis where P. urinaria reduced the virosis to 56.90% followed by A. paniculata (53.82%) and least in C. asiatica (5.15%). The lowest pooled larva mortality 36.99% was recorded in the treatment of P. urinaria. Comparatively higher larva mortality 39.91% was observed with the treatment of A. paniculata. The highest larva mortality in treatment was with C. asiatica (81.99%). In treated control larva mortality was 86.50%.

  • The effects of temperature on the growth of larvae of wrinkled swimming crab (Liocarcinus corrugatus) under controlled laboratory conditions of 15, 20 and $24^{\circ}C$ were investigated (33.5 psu: 12L: 12B). Each specimen was maintained individually, the instar size was determined from exuvia, and the survival and intermolt period of each instar were recorded. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in the survival rates at 15, 20, and $24^{\circ}C.$ Comparison of survival over the first 27 days between the three temperature regimes showed significant differences (P<0.001). The intermolt period increased with the instar number, and was greatly extended at the lowest temperature. The molt increment varied little with temperature, and had a mean value of $21.35\%$ over the whole study. Temperature had little effect on survival and molt increment.

  • The dung beetle, Gymnopleurus mopsus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), is one of endangered species in South Korea. It was last recorded in 1971. To restore this species, we introduced G. mopsus populations from eastern and southern regions of Mongolia in July 2019 and August 2019, respectively. One of the main tasks for the restoration of endangered insects is to develop breeding techniques to eventually incorporate these insects into the restoration system. In a series of laboratory experiments, we investigated effects of short-term hibernation periods on life-history traits of G. mopsus. Adult G. mopsus that had hibernated for 30, 60, and 90 days had lower survival rates than adults that had hibernated for 120 days. We also compared developmental time of these four experimental groups and found a significant difference in the egg - phase. However, the duration of hibernation did not affect the fecundity, brood-ball size, or body size of F1 adults. Follow-up studies are currently being conducted to further investigate the effect of a short-term hibernation period on population growth of G. mopsus under laboratory conditions.
