  • The stabilization techniques in the pavement foundations have advantages in increasing pavement performance and reducing pavement thickness. By mixing the geomaterials and stabilizer, the economical and structurally sound layer can be added in the pavement system. Until now, these techniques have been applied in the field empirically and the design criteria for stabilization has not been established. The purposes of this paper are to evaluate the mechanistic properties of stabilizers used for geomaterials and determine the type and optimum amount of stabilizer for each technique. The unconfined compressive testing and repeated load resilient modulus test were conducted on the coarse grained soils mixed with various types of stabilizer to investigate the strength and deformation characteristics of stabilized geomaterials. It is found from the test that the unconfined compressive strength of stabilized geomaterials is more than ten times higher than that of gradation modified geomaterials. The resilient modulus of stabilized geomaterials increases by $6{\times}10$ times compared to the original soils and tends to increase with increase of volumetric and deviatoric stress, and amount of stabilizer.

  • Warm-mix asphalt(WMA) technology has been developed to allow asphalt mixtures to be produced and compacted at a significantly lower temperature. The WMA technology was identified as one of means to lower emissions for $CO_2$ and has been spread so quickly in the world. Recently, two innovative WMA additives has been developed to reduce mixing and paving temperatures applied in asphalt paving process in Korea. Since the first public demonstration project in 2008, many WMA projects have successfully been constructed in national highways. In 2010, the WMA field trial was conducted on new national highway construction under Dae-Jeon Regional Construction Management Administration. The two different WMA loose mixtures(WMA and WMA-P) and a HMA mixture were collected at the asphalt plant to evaluate their mechanical performance in the laboratory. The Third-scale Model Mobile Loading Simulator(MMLS3) was adopted to evaluate rutting resistance and moisture damage under different traffic and environmental conditions. In this study, plant-produced WMA mixtures using two WMA additives along with the conventional hot mix asphalt(HMA) mixtures were evaluated with respect to their rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility using MMLS3. Based on the limited laboratory test results, plant-produced WMA mixtures are superior to HMA mixtures in rutting resistance and the moisture susceptibility. The WMA additive was effective for producing and compacting the mixture at $30^{\circ}C$ lower than the temperature for the HMA mixture.

  • This study examined the correlation between mechanical properties and LMS(Large molecular size) of binders in hot-recycled asphalt mixtures. Hot-recycled asphalt mixtures were manufactured by various mixing methods. Laboratory tests including indirect tensile strength, wheel tracking test and Kim test were performed for each recycled mixture. Gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis was performed for the binders coated on virgin and old (RAP) aggregates separately. For the purpose of binder aging analysis, a round-shaped virgin coarse aggregates (13mm gravel) were introduced in recycled mixtures. This makes possible to distinguish the virgin aggregates from RAP aggregates in recycled mixtures for GPC sampling. Results of GPC showed that there was significant difference in aging level between the binder coated on RAP and that of virgin aggregates in the same recycled mixture. Regression analysis was performed to correlate mechanical properties to LMS ratio. Results showed that most of the mechanical properties had relatively good correlation with LMS. This trend agree with LMS increase up to some degree, but fails for further LMS increase.

  • Recently, many efforts have been made to construct the first unlined tunnel, without in-situ concrete lining, in Korea. However, the lack of reliability in the performance of shotcrete as permanent tunnel support prevented from its realization. Shotcrete has been regarded to have significant problems in field application and long term performance because of unsatisfactory strength level and durability compared to those of European countries. In this study, the high strength shotcrete satisfying compressive strength over 40 MPa and flexural strength over 4.5 MPa was developed from optimized mix design. The type of accelerators and the amount of silica fume were selected as the main factors in mixing process and the analyses were carried out up to the elapsed time of 2 years. In order to evaluate the short term durability of shotcrete, an array of laboratory test consisting of freeze-thaw, carbonation chloride penetration and permeability test was performed. For long-term durability tests, specimens have been put in an operated highway tunnel to expose them to the similar environment when they are actually used as an unlined tunnel support. From the strength and durability tests, it was found that only alkali-free based accelerator satisfied the target strength of this study and also, the developed shotcrete showed very high performance in its durability.

  • The grouting method is a method of construction for the purpose of waterproofing and reinforcing soft ground. When grout is injected into the ground, there are various types of penetration and diffusion of grout depending on the shape of the ground, the size of soil, the porosity, and the presence or absence of groundwater. the current situation. Therefore, in this study, to investigate the penetration performance of the grouting to conductive material, laboratory tests were performed on the addition of the conductive material. In the injection test, 0%, 3%, and 5% of the mixed water were added as conductive materials to the grout, and the original ground condition was composed of various types of ground composed of gravel and silica sand. Conductive grout is injected by pressure into the model ground using a dedicated injection device, and the injection time (t), pressure (p), flow rate (v) and injection amount (q) are measured, and the hardened body injected in the model ground is collected. Penetration performance was evaluated. In the results of the grout injection experiment, the amount of conductive material used and the grout injection rate showed an inverse relationship, and it was confirmed that the penetration pattern was changed according to the size of the soil particles in the model ground. The grout containing the conductive material has relatively good penetration into the ground and excellent strength and durability of the hardened body, so it was judged that it could be used as an additive for measuring the penetration range of the grout.

  • Objectives: This study was carried out to analyze the single dose toxicity of ShinEumHur (SEH) pharmacopuncture injected into the muscles of Sprague-Dawley rats. Methods: The SEH pharmacopuncture was made in a clean room at the Korean Pharmacopuncture Institute (K-GMP). After the mixing process with sterile distilled water had been completed, the pH was controlled to between 7.0 and 7.5. All experiments were conducted at Biotoxtech, an institution authorized to perform non-clinical studies under the Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations. Sprague-Dawley rats were chosen for the pilot study. Doses of SEH pharmacopuncture, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 mL, were administered to the experimental groups, and a dose of normal saline solution, 1.0 mL, was administered to the control group. We examined the survival rate, weights, clinical signs, mean hematology parameters, mean clinical chemistry, necropsy and histopathological findings. This study was conducted under the approval of the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee. Results: No deaths or abnormalities occurred in any of the four groups. No significant changes in weight, hematological parameters or clinical chemistry between the control group and the experimental groups were observed. To check for abnormalities in organs and tissues, we used microscopy to examine representative histological sections of each specified organ; the results showed no significant differences in any of the organs or tissues. Conclusion: The above findings suggest that treatment with SEH pharmacopuncture is relatively safe. Further studies on this subject are needed to yield more concrete evidence.

  • The excavation performance and the cutting tool wear prediction of shield TBM are very important issues for design and construction in TBM tunneling. For hard-rock TBMs, CSM and NTNU model have been widely used for prediction of disc cutter wear and penetration rate. But in case of soft-ground TBMs, the wear evaluation and the excavation performance have not been studied in details due to the complexity of the ground behavior and therefore few testing methods have been proposed. In this study, a new soil abrasion and penetration tester (SAPT) that simulates EPB TBM excavation process is introduced which overcomes the drawbacks of the previously developed soil abrasivity testers. Parametric tests for penetration rate, foam mixing ratio, foam concentration were conducted to evaluate influential parameters affecting TBM excavation and also ripper wear was measured in laboratory. The results of artificial soil specimen composed of 70% illite and 30% silica sand showed TBM additives such as foam play a key role in terms of excavation and tool wear.

  • Tracer experiments were carried out on two laboratory modes, "without media mode" and "with media mode", to examine the hydraulic characteristics of the anaerobic fluidized bed bioreactor (AFBR). For both configurations, a formula was derived for the hydraulics and data interpretation to obtain the actual characteristics of the reactor. The dispersion model is based on the assumption that carriers are non-reacting and the dispersion coefficient is constant. The model represents the one-dimensional unsteady-state concentration distribution of the non-reacting tracer in the reactors. The experimental results showed that the media increased the mixing conditions in the reactor considerably. For the reactor without media, in the range tested, the dispersion coefficient was at least an order of magnitude smaller than that of the reactor with media. Advective transport dominates and the flow pattern approaches the plug flow reactor (PFR) regime. The dispersion coefficient increased significantly as us, the superficial liquid velocity, was increased proportionally to 0.82cm/s. On the other hand, for the reactor with media, the flow pattern was in between a PFR and a completely mixed flow reactor (CMFR) regime, and the dispersion coefficient was saturated at us=0.41cm/s, remaining relatively constant, even at us=0.82cm/s. The dispersion coefficient depends strongly on the liquid Reynolds number (Re) or the particle Reynolds number (Rep) over the range tested.

  • In the precedent study it was presented that the comparison of thermal resistivity using various backfill materials including river sand regarding water content, dry unit weight and particle size distribution. Based on the precedent study, this study focused on developing the optimized backfill material that would improve the power transfer capability and minimize the thermal runaway due to an increase of power transmission capacity of underground power cables. When raw materials, such as river sand, recycled sand, crush rock and stone powder, are used for a backfill material, they has not efficient thermal resistivity around underground power cables. Thus, laboratory tests are performed by mixing Fly-ash, slag and floc with them, and then it is found that the optimized backfill material are required proper water content and maximum density. Through various experimental test, when coarse material, crush rock, is mixed with recycled sand, stone powder, slag or floc for a dense material, the thermal resistivity of it has $50^{\circ}C$-cm/Watt at optimum moisture content, and the increase of thermal resistivity does not happen in dry condition. The result of experiments approach the optimization of the backfill materials for underground power cables.
