  • The low-power, low-cost femtocell network has been proposed not only to alleviate traffic load to the macro base station (eNB) but also to cover the indoor coverage hole problem. However, in the dense femtocell environment where many femtocells are deployed to cover the whole large office building, performance of such femtocell environment can be deteriorated due to severe co-channel interference problem between the eNB and femtocells and among neighboring femtocells. In particular, a macro UE(mUE) located within femtocell coverage may experience severe co-channel interference from surrounding femtocells. Therefore, In this paper, we propose a novel power control schemes to mitigate interference to a mUE under such dense LTE femtocell environment. With proposed femtocell power control schemes, performance of the mUE can be greatly improved in terms of the outage probability and the SINR while maintaining satisfying femtocell performance. Simulation based performance study shows that the proposed power control scheme is able to enhance mUE performance more than 30% than the conventional dense femtocell in terms of the two performance metrics.

  • Heterogeneous Network and CSG cell are hot issues in the 3GPP LTE/LTE-Advanced system. In this paper, we analyze the system information measurement methods which are essential for handover to CSG cell. Since there have been no sufficient discussion about this problem, we present and analyze five possible solutions. Moreover, we propose a novel solution to reduce system information measurement delay. In the proposed Autonomous Measurement with Parallel Small Gap(AMPSG) method, the UE measures system information of neighbor cells in a parallel manner. As a result, the proposed method shows better delay performance. Therefore, the proposed AMPSG method can reduce handover delay since the UE have to measure the system information of neighbor cells before CSG handover decision.

  • In this paper, a new algorithm for the calculation of the range between an LTE base station (BS) and a user equipment (UE) using time-of-arrival (TOA) measurements of LTE signals is proposed. First, the cell identity (cell ID) of the received signal is acquired using the primary synchronization signal (PSS) and secondary synchronization signal (SSS) to identify the BS transmitted the signal. The proposed algorithm exploits the cell-specific reference signal (CRS), the reference sequence inserted in commercial LTE signals, to estimate the time delay using 2D cross-correlation. The obtained TOA estimations can be used to calculate the range employed from the known BS location. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated with the experiment performed using real LTE signals transmitted from the commercial BS.

  • As various services requiring high data rate are supported by introducing LTE/LTE-adv., mobile traffic increases rapidly. To cope with the continuous growth of traffic demand, small cell technology is considered as one of the most promising one. Small cell can increase system capacity by increasing the number of base stations with reduced cell radius. In this paper, we analyze the effect of cell densification with small cells in terms of SINR and average UE throughput considering cell split and the number of UE per unit area. As the cell becomes smaller, SINR degradation arises from high ICI(Inter Cell Interference) and we evaluate the effect of interference mitigation scheme in small cell environment where the proper interference mitigation technique is applied.

  • To ensure the mobility of the UE(User Equipment), the handover phenomenon occurs depending on the level and quality of the radio signal. According to the set of handover event, the threshold of handover is changed. In this paper, we analyze the handover performance using LTE KPI(Key Performance Indicator) of measurement mobile traffic data in Ireland.

  • Carrier aggregation is an essential feature in the Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) system, which allows the scalable expansion of the effective bandwidth to be delivered to user equipment (UE) through the concurrent use of radio resources across multiple component carriers (CCs). This system's optimal radio-resource use has received much attention under simultaneous access (SA) scenarios for multiple CCs (m-CCs). This letter establishes how many CCs a UE should simultaneously connect to maintain maximum uplink capacity. Under the m-CC LTE-A system, the spectral efficiency of the m-CC SA scheme ($m{\geq}2$) is compared with that of CC selection (CCS). Numerical results reveal that the 2-CC SA scheme outperforms CCS and performs almost equally to the m-CC SA scheme ($m{\geq}3$).

  • Recently, the use of mobile devices has increased, and mobile traffic is growing rapidly. In order to deal with such massive traffic, cognitive radio (CR) is applied to efficiently use limited-spectrum resources. However, there can be multiple communication systems trying to access the white space (unused spectrum), and inevitable interference may occur to cause mutual performance degradation. Therefore, understanding the effects of interference in CR-based systems is crucial to meaningful operations of these systems. In this paper, we consider a long-term evolution (LTE) system using additional spectra by accessing the TV white space, where low-power devices (LPDs) are licensed primary users, in addition to TV broadcasting service providers. We model such a heterogeneous system to analyze the co-existence problem and evaluate the interference effects of LPDs on LTE user equipment (UE) throughput. We then present methods to mitigate the interference effects of LPDs by 'de-selecting' some of the UEs to effectively increase the overall sector throughput of the CR-based LTE system.

  • Recent advancements in broadband wireless communication technologies enable mobile users to receive video streaming services with various smart devices. The long term evolution (LTE) network provides high bandwidth and low latency for several emerging mobile applications. This paper proposes the buffer aware scheduling (BAS) approach to schedule the downlink video traffic in LTE network. The proposed BAS scheme applies the weighting function to heuristically adjust the scheduling priority by considering the buffer status and channel condition of UE so as to reduce the time that UE stays in the connected state without receiving data. Both of 1080P and 2160P resolution video streaming sources were applied for exhaustive simulations to examine the performance of the proposed scheme by comparing to that of the fair bandwidth (FB) and the best channel quality indicator (CQI) schemes. The simulation results indicate that the proposed BAS scheme not only achieves better performance in power saving, streaming delivery time, and throughput than the FB scheme while maintaining the similar performance as the best CQI scheme in light traffic load. Specifically, the proposed scheme reduces streaming delivery time and generates less signaling overhead than the best CQI scheme when the traffic load is heavy.

  • This paper presents process of the UE obtains the cell system information in order to achieve communication with the LTE network on the LTE. This paper deals with the process of extracting MIB(Master Information Block) cell system information in LTE. To study the 3GPP LTE standard spec series 36.200 and 36.300, the simulation is implemented to extract the MIB in MATLAB program. The simulation process is divided into three parts. It consisted of a part that extracts the PSS, SSS and MIB. Called a cell search process for detecting the PSS and SSS, the process is to be done in order to extract only the cell system information. The simulation program is verified based on the signal captured from the real Air.

  • Recently, due to a explosive growth in the mobile Internet traffic, the problem of excessive data traffic handling on core network and thus scalability problem have been magnified in 3GPP LTE/SAE networks. Current LTE/SAE network based on the central P-GW (PDN Gateway) used as mobility anchor cannot deal with such demand for exponentially increasing mobile Internet traffic. In this paper, we propose a new LTE/SAE network architecture supporting distributed P-GWs and corresponding distributed mobility management to solve these problems. For this, in addition to the deployment of such distributed P-GWs, we propose a dynamic and distributed mobility management by distributing MMEs (Mobility Management Entities) which dynamically manages the location information of a UE's PDN connection, and also propose a handover procedure of such PDN connections by using the proposed distributed P-GWs and MMEs. The performance of the proposed dynamic and distributed LTE/SAE network system is compared with the current LTE/SAE network system in terms of handover latency and network throughput.
