Machine Learning Based Failure Prognostics of Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors (머신러닝을 이용한 알루미늄 전해 커패시터 고장예지)

  • In the age of industry 4.0, artificial intelligence is being widely used to realize machinery condition monitoring. Due to their excellent performance and the ability to handle large volumes of data, machine learning techniques have been applied to realize the fault diagnosis of different equipment. In this study, we performed the failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor by using deep learning and big data. Several tests were performed to identify the main failure mode of the aluminum electrolytic capacitor, and it was noted that the capacitance reduced significantly over time due to overheating. To reflect the capacitance degradation behavior over time, we employed the Vanilla long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network architecture. The LSTM neural network has been demonstrated to achieve excellent long-term predictions. The prediction results and metrics of the LSTM and Vanilla LSTM models were examined and compared. The Vanilla LSTM outperformed the conventional LSTM in terms of the computational resources and time required to predict the capacitance degradation.

A Robust Energy Consumption Forecasting Model using ResNet-LSTM with Huber Loss

  • Energy consumption has grown alongside dramatic population increases. Statistics show that buildings in particular utilize a significant amount of energy, worldwide. Because of this, building energy prediction is crucial to best optimize utilities' energy plans and also create a predictive model for consumers. To improve energy prediction performance, this paper proposes a ResNet-LSTM model that combines residual networks (ResNets) and long short-term memory (LSTM) for energy consumption prediction. ResNets are utilized to extract complex and rich features, while LSTM has the ability to learn temporal correlation; the dense layer is used as a regression to forecast energy consumption. To make our model more robust, we employed Huber loss during the optimization process. Huber loss obtains high efficiency by handling minor errors quadratically. It also takes the absolute error for large errors to increase robustness. This makes our model less sensitive to outlier data. Our proposed system was trained on historical data to forecast energy consumption for different time series. To evaluate our proposed model, we compared our model's performance with several popular machine learning and deep learning methods such as linear regression, neural networks, decision tree, and convolutional neural networks, etc. The results show that our proposed model predicted energy consumption most accurately.

Servo control strategy for uni-axial shake tables using long short-term memory networks

  • Servo-motor driven uniaxial shake tables have been widely used for education and research purposes in earthquake engineering. These shake tables are mostly displacement-controlled by a digital proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller; however, accurate reproduction of acceleration time histories is not guaranteed. In this study, a control strategy is proposed and verified for uniaxial shake tables driven by a servo-motor. This strategy incorporates a deep-learning algorithm named Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network into a displacement PID feedback controller. The LSTM controller is trained by using a large number of experimental data of a self-made servo-motor driven uniaxial shake table. After the training is completed, the LSTM controller is implemented for directly generating the command voltage for the servo motor to drive the shake table. Meanwhile, a displacement PID controller is tuned and implemented close to the LSTM controller to prevent the shake table from permanent drift. The control strategy is named the LSTM-PID control scheme. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed LSTM-PID improves the acceleration tracking performance of the uniaxial shake table for both bare condition and loaded condition with a slender specimen.

A Study on the Forecasting of Bunker Price Using Recurrent Neural Network

  • In this paper, we propose the deep learning-based neural network model to predict bunker price. In the shipping industry, since fuel oil accounts for the largest portion of ship operation costs and its price is highly volatile, so companies can secure market competitiveness by making fuel oil purchasing decisions based on rational and scientific method. In this paper, short-term predictive analysis of HSFO 380CST in Singapore is conducted by using three recurrent neural network models like RNN, LSTM, and GRU. As a result, first, the forecasting performance of RNN models is better than LSTM and GRUs using long-term memory, and thus the predictive contribution of long-term information is low. Second, since the predictive performance of recurrent neural network models is superior to the previous studies using econometric models, it is confirmed that the recurrent neural network models should consider nonlinear properties of bunker price. The result of this paper will be helpful to improve the decision quality of bunker purchasing.

Chinese-clinical-record Named Entity Recognition using IDCNN-BiLSTM-Highway Network

  • Chinese named entity recognition (NER) is a challenging work that seeks to find, recognize and classify various types of information elements in unstructured text. Due to the Chinese text has no natural boundary like the spaces in the English text, Chinese named entity identification is much more difficult. At present, most deep learning based NER models are developed using a bidirectional long short-term memory network (BiLSTM), yet the performance still has some space to improve. To further improve their performance in Chinese NER tasks, we propose a new NER model, IDCNN-BiLSTM-Highway, which is a combination of the BiLSTM, the iterated dilated convolutional neural network (IDCNN) and the highway network. In our model, IDCNN is used to achieve multiscale context aggregation from a long sequence of words. Highway network is used to effectively connect different layers of networks, allowing information to pass through network layers smoothly without attenuation. Finally, the global optimum tag result is obtained by introducing conditional random field (CRF). The experimental results show that compared with other popular deep learning-based NER models, our model shows superior performance on two Chinese NER data sets: Resume and Yidu-S4k, The F1-scores are 94.98 and 77.59, respectively.

Development of Deep Learning Based Deterioration Prediction Model for the Maintenance Planning of Highway Pavement (도로포장의 유지관리 계획 수립을 위한 딥러닝 기반 열화 예측 모델 개발)

  • The maintenance cost for road pavement is gradually increasing due to the continuous increase in road extension as well as increase in the number of old routes that have passed the public period. As a result, there is a need for a method of minimizing costs through preventative grievance preventive maintenance requires the establishment of a strategic plan through accurate prediction of road pavement. Hence, In this study, the deep neural network(DNN) and the recurrent neural network(RNN) were used in order to develop the expressway pavement damage prediction model. A superior model among these two network models was then suggested by comparing and analyzing their performance. In order to solve the RNN's vanishing gradient problem, the LSTM (Long short-term memory) circuits which are a more complicated form of the RNN structure were used. The learning result showed that the RMSE value of the RNN-LSTM model was 0.102 which was lower than the RMSE value of the DNN model, indicating that the performance of the RNN-LSTM model was superior. In addition, high accuracy of the RNN-LSTM model was verified through the comparison between the estimated average road pavement condition and the actually measured road pavement condition of the target section over time.

  • Predicting network traffic volume has become a popular topic recently due to its support in many situations such as detecting abnormal network activities and provisioning network services. Especially, predicting the volume of the next upcoming traffic from the series of observed recent traffic volume is an interesting and challenging problem. In past, various techniques are researched by using time series forecasting methods such as moving averaging and exponential smoothing. In this paper, we propose a long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) based network traffic volume prediction method. The proposed method employs the changing rate of observed traffic volume, the corresponding time window index, and a seasonality factor indicating the changing trend as input features, and predicts the upcoming network traffic. The experiment results with real datasets proves that our proposed method works better than other time series forecasting methods in predicting upcoming network traffic.

LSTM based sequence-to-sequence Model for Korean Automatic Word-spacing (LSTM 기반의 sequence-to-sequence 모델을 이용한 한글 자동 띄어쓰기)

  • We proposed a LSTM-based RNN model that can effectively perform the automatic spacing characteristics. For those long or noisy sentences which are known to be difficult to handle within Neural Network Learning, we defined a proper input data format and decoding data format, and added dropout, bidirectional multi-layer LSTM, layer normalization, and attention mechanism to improve the performance. Despite of the fact that Sejong corpus contains some spacing errors, a noise-robust learning model developed in this study with no overfitting through a dropout method helped training and returned meaningful results of Korean word spacing and its patterns. The experimental results showed that the performance of LSTM sequence-to-sequence model is 0.94 in F1-measure, which is better than the rule-based deep-learning method of GRU-CRF.

Deep Learning based Abnormal Vibration Prediction of Drone (딥러닝을 통한 드론의 비정상 진동 예측)

  • In this paper, in order to prevent the fall of the drone, a study was conducted to collect vibration data from the motor connected to the propeller of the drone, and to predict the abnormal vibration of the drone using recurrent neural network (RNN) and long short term memory (LSTM). In order to collect the vibration data of the drone, a vibration sensor is attached to the motor connected to the propeller of the drone to collect vibration data on normal, bar damage, rotor damage, and shaft deflection, and abnormal vibration data are collected through LSTM and RNN. The root mean square error (RMSE) value of the vibration prediction result were compared and analyzed. As a result of the comparative simulation, it was confirmed that both the predicted result through RNN and LSTM predicted the abnormal vibration pattern very accurately. However, the vibration predicted by the LSTM was found to be 15.4% lower on average than the vibration predicted by the RNN.

Speed Prediction of Urban Freeway Using LSTM and CNN-LSTM Neural Network (LSTM 및 CNN-LSTM 신경망을 활용한 도시부 간선도로 속도 예측)

  • One of the methods to alleviate traffic congestion is to increase the efficiency of the roads by providing traffic condition information on road user and distributing the traffic. For this, reliability must be guaranteed, and quantitative real-time traffic speed prediction is essential. In this study, and based on analysis of traffic speed related to traffic conditions, historical data correlated with traffic flow were used as input. We developed an LSTM model that predicts speed in response to normal traffic conditions, along with a CNN-LSTM model that predicts speed in response to incidents. Through these models, we try to predict traffic speeds during the hour in five-minute intervals. As a result, predictions had an average error rate of 7.43km/h for normal traffic flows, and an error rate of 7.66km/h for traffic incident flows when there was an incident.
