  • The Multi-Band Excitation(MBE) speech coder uses a different approach for the representation of the excitation signal. It replaces the frame-based single voiced/unvoiced classification of a classical speech coder with a set of such decision over harmonic intervals in the frequency domain. This enables each speech segment to be a mixture of voiced and unvoiced, and improves the synthetic speech quality by reducing decision errors that might occur on the frame-based single voiced and unvoiced decision process when input speech is degraded with noise. The IMBE-LP, improved version of MBE with linear prediction, represents the spectral information of MBE model with linear prediction coefficients to obtain low bit rate of 2.4 kbps. In this Paper, we proposed a variable rate IMBE-LP vocoder that has lower bit rate than IMBE-LP without degrading the synthetic speech quality. To determine the LP order, it uses the spectral band information of the MBE model that has something to do with he input speech's characteristics. Experimental results are riven with our findings and discussions.

  • The main objective of this study is to compare three representative methods predicting compressive forces on lumbosacral disc : LP-based method, double LP-based method and EMG-assisted method. Two subjects simulated lifting tasks performed in the refractories industry, in which vertical and horizontal distance, and weight of load were varied. To calculate the L5/S1 compressive forces, EMG signals from six trunk muscles were measured and postural data and locations of load were recorded using the Motion Analysis System. The EMG-assisted model was shown to reflect well all three factors considered here. On the other hand, the compressive forces of the LP-based model and the double LP-based model were only significantly affected by weight of load. In addition, lowly positive correlation was observed between compressive forces of the EMG-assisted model and lifting index(LI) of 1991 NIOSH lifting equation. From this results, it can be concluded that compressive forces on L5/S1 by the EMG-assisted method should be used as biomechanical criterion in order to evaluate risk of jobs precisely, and LI can not evaluate risk of lifting tasks fully.

  • This paper illustrates a new method to solve the fuzzy goal programming (FGP) problem. It is proved that the FGP proposed by Narasimhan can be solved on the basis of linear programming(LP) model. Narasimhan formulated the FGP problem as a set of $S^{K}$LP problems, each containing 3K constraints, where K is the number of fuzzy goals/constraints. Whereas Hanna formulated the FGP problem as a single LP problem with only 2K constraints and 2K + 1 additional variables. This paper presents that the FGP problem can be transformed with easy into a single LP model with 2K constraints and only one additional variables. And we propose extended FGP :(1) FGP with weights associated with individual goals, (2) FGP with preemptive prioities. The extended FGP has a framework that is identical to that of conventional goal programming (GP), such that the extended FGP can be applied with fuzzy concept to the all areas where GP can be applied.d.

  • In this study, comparisons were made among three representative methods for predicting compressive forces on the lumbosacral disc: LP-based model, double LP-based model and EMG-assisted model. Two subjects simulated lifting tasks that are normally performed in the refractories industry. In the refractories lifting tasks, vertical and horizontal distance, and weight of load were varied. To calculate the L5/Sl compressive forces, EMG signals from six trunk muscles were measured and postural data were recorded using the Motion Analysis System. The EMG-assisted model was shown to reflect well all three factors considered here. On the other hand, the compressive forces of the two LP-based models were only significantly affected by weight of load.

  • This paper presents a voice conversion technique that modifies the utterance of a source speaker as if it were spoken by a target speaker. Feature parameter conversion methods to perform the transformation of vocal tract and prosodic characteristics between the source and target speakers are described. The transformation of vocal tract characteristics is achieved by modifying the LPC cepstral coefficients using Linear Multivariate Regression (LMR). Prosodic transformation is done by changing the average pitch period between speakers, and it is applied to the residual signal using the LP-PSOLA scheme. Experimental results show that transformed speech by LMR and LP-PSOLA synthesis method contains much characteristics of the target speaker.

  • Exhaust system of steam turbines consists of an annular diffuser and a collector and connects the last stage turbine and the condenser. The system is used to transfer the turbine leaving kinetic energy to potential energy while guiding the flow from turbine exit plane to the downstream condenser. In the steam turbine exhaust system, distorted pressure profile is arisen by the nonaxisymmetric collector structure at the diffuser outlet, and this distorted pressure is propagated to the last stage LP turbine exit plane through the diffuser, then the last stage LP turbine experiences asymmetric back pressure. It is known that the pressure recovery performance of diffuser is strongly influenced by diffuser inflow condition. In this study, the effect of exhaust system due to the changing of inlet flow condition is observed by using CFD, and the interaction of last stage LP turbine and exhaust system is investigated by using actuator disk model as modeling of turbine blade row of exhaust hood inlet.

  • Nanometric Lactobacillus plantarum nF1 (nLp-nF1) is a biogenics consisting of dead L. plantarum cells pretreated with heat and a nanodispersion process. In this study, we investigated the immune-enhancing effects of nLp-nF1 in vivo and in vitro. To evaluate the immunostimulatory effects of nLp-nF1, mice immunosuppressed by cyclophosphamide (CPP) treatment were administered with nLp-nF1. As expected, CPP restricted the immune response of mice, whereas oral administration of nLp-nF1 significantly increased the total IgG in the serum, and cytokine production (interleukin-12 (IL-12) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-${\alpha}$)) in bone marrow cells. Furthermore, nLp-nF1 enhanced the production of splenic cytokines such as IL-12, TNF-${\alpha}$, and interferon gamma (IFN-${\gamma}$). In vitro, nLp-nF1 stimulated the immune response by enhancing the production of cytokines such as IL-12, TNF-${\alpha}$, and IFN-${\gamma}$. Moreover, nLp-nF1 given a food additive enhanced the immune responses when combined with various food materials in vitro. These results suggest that nLp-nF1 could be used to strengthen the immune system and recover normal immunity in people with a weak immune system, such as children, the elderly, and patients.

  • This paper reports the results obtained from the Langmuir probe (LP) and Electron Temperature Probe (ETP) experiments on the sounding rocket KSR-II (Korean Scientific Rocket - II) which was launched on Jun 11, 1998 at 10:00 KST from Tae-An peninsula (37$^{\circ}$ N, 126$^{\circ}$ E). The instruments successfully measured the electron density, electron temperature, and the floating potential at altitudes of 73km to 130km. While the electron temperature measurement is not easy in this region, since the temperature is very low and the contamination effect of the probe may give rise to a problem, we were able to obtain a reasonable electron temperature profile by employing two independent methods, the pulse modulated Langmuir Probe and Electron Temperature Probe. The preliminary results show that electron density increases sharply at about 90km, and forms a peak at 102km. The density profile is roughly consistent with IRI (International Reference Ionosphere)95-model or PIM (Parameterized Ionospheric Model) results except that the peak density appears at 110km in the model and model electron density is slightly lower than the observed one. Electron temperature obtained from ETP fluctuates between 200$^{\circ}$K and 700$^{\circ}$K, an effect presumably coming from the wakes developed by LP, and it tends to increase with the altitude, which is consistent with the LP results.

  • Objective : Osteoporosis result from age-related decline in the number of osteoblast progenitors in the bone marrow. Probiotics have beneficial effects on the host, when administered in appropriate amounts. This study investigated the effects of probiotics expressing specific genes, especially the effects of genetically modified bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2-expressing Lactobacillus plantarum CJNU 3003 (LP) on ovariectomized rats. Methods : Twenty-eight female Wistar rats (250-300 g, 12 weeks old) were divided into four groups : the sham (control), the ovariectomy (OVX)-induced osteoporosis group (OVX), the OVX and LP (OVX/LP), OVX and genetically modified BMP-2-expressing LP (OVX/LP with BMP) groups. The three groups underwent bilateral OVX and two of these groups were administered two different types of LP via oral gavage daily. At 16 weeks post-OVX, blood was collected from the heart and the bilateral tibiae were extracted and were scanned by ex-vivo micro-computed tomography and stained with hematoxylin-and-eosin (H&E) and Masson's trichrome stain for pathological assessment. The serum levels of osteocalcin (OC), rat C-telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-I), BMP-2, and receptor activator of nuclear factor-ĸB ligand (RANKL) were measured. Results : The 3D-micro-computed tomography images showed that the trabecular structure in the OVX/LP with BMP group was maintained compared with OVX and OVX/LP groups. No significant differences were detected in trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) between control and OVX/LP with BMP groups (p>0.05). Furthermore, a tendency toward increased BMD, trabecular bone volume, Tb.Th, and trabecular number and decreased trabecular separation was found in rats in the OVX/LP with BMP groups when compared with the OVX and OVX/LP groups (p>0.05). The H&E and Masson's trichrome stained sections showed a thicker trabecular bone in the OVX/LP with BMP group compared with the OVX and OVX/LP groups. There was no difference in serum levels of OC, CTX and RANKL control and OVX/LP with BMP groups (p>0.05). In contrast, significant differences were found in OC and CTX-1 levels between the OVX and OVX/LP with BMP groups (p<0.05). Conclusion : Our results showed that the expression of genetically modified BMP-2 showed inhibition effect for bone loss in a rat model of osteoporosis.
