The new technique has been used to determine the soil-reinforcement interaction. The testing apparatus is essentially a triaxial cell fitted with the capability to house a hollow cylinderical sample. A hollow cylinderical sand specimen with a concentrical layer of reinfarcing material sandwitched in the middle is used in this investigation. The reinforcement is fastened at the base. The hollow specimen can be viewed as a "unit sheet" of a soil-reinforcement composite system of infinite horizontal extent. Axial load as well as inner and outer chamber pressures can be applied to perform a test. The specimen is first subjected to an isotropic stress state corresponding to the overburden pressure. Next, an extension test by reducing the axial load is carried out. The specimen is "loaded" to failure by either the breakage of reinforcing material (tensile failure) or slippage which takes place at the soil-reinforcement interface (i.e. the overcoming of the bonding capacity). Since the reinforcement is fastened at its lower end to the base, any tendency of relative movement between the reinforcement and the sand during an extension test can induce tensile force in the reinforcement thus forming a "reversed pull-out" test condition. Preliminary test results have demonstrated positively of the new approach to test the soil-reinforcement interaction. Reinforcing elements of different extensibility were used to study the deformbility of reinforced soil. Furthermore, both the breakage and the pull-out modes of failure were observed.

In design of sport footwear, bending stiffness of its toe part is an important factor though it can be hardly measured. This paper introduces a device for measuring the bending stiffness. The device is simply designed with aluminum frames, one AC motor, two load-cells, one encoder and control hardwares. The mechanism measuring the bending moment of a shoe is described. Then, it was used to observe how the midsole material and design of a sports shoe affect on its bending stiffness. For the experiments, various specimens prepared, where each midsole of the specimens is different in terms of material, thickness and hardness. With those specimens, experiments were performed by using the device and then the bending stiffness was computed by applying the least square curve fitting after the bending moment data were measured. The specimen with Poly-urethane(PU) midsole has the higher bending stiffness than the one with Phylon(PH) midsole, and the midsole thickness affects more on the bending stiffness than the midsole hardness. Based on those results, it can be concluded that the measurement device can provide consistent bending stiffness data to sports footwear and the bending stiffness of a footwear measured by the developed device can be used as a major parameter in the footwear design.

An impulse turbine, which is a main component of a liquid rocket engine, needs to be a small size with light weight and generate large power. Since the impulse turbine is being operated under complicated supersonic conditions, flow analysis and performance prediction largely depend on CFD technique. In order to increase the reliability of the prediction code, however, it often requires an experimental data to compare. In this research a rotating turbine rotor with multiple blades is simulated with a two-dimensional stationary cascade to check the effect of major flow parameters. Mach number is measured at nozzle exit by using a pitot tube and the blade thrust was also measured with a load cell. The measured thrust coefficient and the power are compared well with the designed conditions, which proves the design procedures are properly taken.
Background and Aims: Advances in the treatment of cervical cancer over the last decade have predominantly involved the development of genes directed at molecular targets. Gene therapy is recognized to be a novel method for the treatment of cervical cancer. Genes can be administered into target cells via nanocarriers. This study aimed to develop systemically administrable nano-vectors. Floate (Fa) containing gene loaded nanoparticles (NPs) could target HeLa human cervical cancer cells through combination with receptors on the cells to increase the nuclear uptake of genetic materials. Methods: Fa was linked onto Poly (ethylene glycol)-b-poly (D, L-lactide) (PEG-PLA) to form Fa-PEG-PLA, and the resulting material was used to load plasmids of enhanced green fluorescence protein (pEGFP) to obtain gene loaded nanoparticles (Fa-NPs/DNA). Physical-chemical characteristics, in vitro release and cytotoxicity of Fa-NPs/DNA were evaluated. The in vitro transfection efficiency of Fa-NPs/DNA was evaluated in HeLa cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). PEG-PLA without Fa was used to load pEGFP from NPs/DNA as a control. Results: Fa-NPs/DNA has a particle size of 183 nm and a gene loading quantity of 92%. After 72h of transfection, Fa-NPs/DNA displayed over 20% higher transfection efficiency than NPs/DNA and 40% higher than naked DNA in HeLa cells. However, in HUVECs, no significant difference appeared between Fa-NPs/DNA and NPs/DNA. Conclusions: Fa-PEG-PLA NPs could function as excellent materials for gene loading. This nano-approach could be used as tumor cell targeted medicine for the treatment of cervical cancer.
Applicability of laser micro welding process to the fabrication of medical devices was investigated. Austenitic stainless steel wire (SUS304) was spot melted and crosswise welded, which is one of the most possible welding process for the fabrication of medical devices, by using a Nd-YAG laser. Effects of welding parameters on the microstructure, tensile strength and corrosion resistance were discussed. In the spot melting, melted metal width decreased with decreasing the input energy and pulse duration. Controlling the laser wave to reduce laser noise which occurred in the early stage of laser irradiation made reasonable welding condition wider in the welding condition of small pulse duration such as 2ms. The microstructure of the melted metal was a cellular dendrite structure and the cell size of the weld metal was about 0.5~3.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Tensile strength increased with the decrease of the melted metal width and reached to a maximum about 660MPa, which is comparable with that for the tempered base metal. Even by immersion test at 318K for 3600ks in quasi biological environment (0.9% NaCl), microstructure of the melted metal and tensile strength hardly changed from those for as melted material. In the crosswise welding, joints morphologies were classified into 3 types by the melting state of lower wire. Fracture load increased with input energy and melted area of lower wire, and reached to a maximum about 80N. However, when input energy was further increased and lower wire was fully melted, fracture load decreased due to the burn out of weld metal.

Dense Heterogeneous Cellular Networks(HCNs) offer a promising approach to meet the target of 1000x increase in aggregate data rates in 5G wireless communication systems. However how to best utilize the available radio resources at densely deployed small cells remains an open problem as those small cells are typically unplanned. In this paper we focus on balancing loads across macro cells and small cells by offloading users to small cells, as well as dynamically switching off underutilized small cells. We propose a joint user association and base station(BS) sleep mangement(UA-BSM) scheme that proactively offloads users to a fraction of the densely deployed small cells. We propose a heuristic algorithm that iteratively solves the user association problem and puts BSs with low loads into sleep. An interference relation matrix(IRM) is constructed to help us identify the candidate BSs that can be put into sleep. User associations are then aggregated to selected small cells that remain active. Simulation results show that our proposed approach achieves load balancing across macro and small cells and reduces the number of active BSs. Numerical results show user signal to interference ratio(SINR) can be improved by small cell sleep control.
To improve the core technology of the micro gas turbine, the performance test facility was developed. This paper is focusing on the explanation of the characteristics of micro gas turbine and its assist devices. Major part of micro gas turbine were radial type of compressor, annular type of combustor, radial type of turbine, thrust foil bearing, radial foil bearing and generator. The assist devices were consist of exhaust duct, inverter, data acquisition system, load bank and test cell. Before building up the test facility, the component test was previously conducted to confirm the component performance. After the test facility was prepared, the motoring test was conducted to investigate the rotor dynamic characteristics of the micro gas turbine. Also, the part load performance test was performed. With a developed micro gas turbine test facility, the improved core technology about the micro gas turbine can be suggested to the related industries.

Objective: The aim of this study is to develop an ergonomic office chair that has an alarm function for the unbalanced sitting postures. Background: Contrary to expectation, it is reported that office workers sit on their chairs much more in unbalanced postures during daily work. Even though an office worker uses an ergonomically good-designed chair and begins their work in a good sitting posture, his/her posture is likely to shift to the unbalanced bad posture. Therefore, a posture alarm system would be very helpful in keeping office workers' good postures. Method: We developed a prototype chair with four load cells under a seat pan and one load cell beneath a backrest. Through some experiments, we set the criteria for unbalanced bad postures then implemented the criteria into the alarm system of the prototype chair. The chair called e-BASE chair could detect unbalance postures and show alarms for chair users. We also enhanced back support by developing a step-wised folding backrest. Results: The e-BASE chair showed better performance in interface pressure distributions and balanced posture ratio in VDT work. Conclusion: The ergonomic chair with posture alarm function(e-BASE chair) was developed. It showed better performance in seat pressure distribution and in keeping good posture during office work. Application: The posture alarm system and folding backrest can be applied to the new models of office chair.
As few multi-tower single-box multi-cell cable-stayed bridges with corrugated steel webs have been built, analysis is mostly achieved by combining single-girder model, beam grillage model and solid model in support of the design. However, such analysis methods usually suffer from major limitations in terms of the engineering applications: single-girder model fails to account for spatial effect such as shear lag effect of the box girder and the relevant effective girder width and eccentric load coefficient; owing to the approximation in the principle equivalence, the plane grillage model cannot accurately capture shear stress distribution and local stress state in both top and bottom flange of composite box girder; and solid model is difficult to be practically combined with the overall calculation. The usual effective width method fails to provide a uniform and accurate "effective length" (and the codes fail to provide a unified design approach at those circumstance) considering different shear lag effects resulting from dead load, prestress and cable tension in the construction. Therefore, a novel spatial grid model has been developed to account for shear lag effect. The theoretical principle of the proposed spatial grid model has been elaborated along with the relevant illustrations of modeling parameters of composite box girder with corrugated steel webs. Then typical transverse and longitudinal shear lag coefficient distribution pattern at the side-span and mid-span key cross sections have been analyzed and summarized to provide reference for similar bridges. The effectiveness and accuracy of spatial grid analysis methods has been finally validated through a practical cable-stayed bridge.
Objective: The study aim was to prepare poly-DL-lactide-poly (PELA) microspheres encapsulating recombinant tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) in an adenovirus to investigate its inhibition on the proliferation of hepatocellular carcinoma cells HepG2. Methods: Microspheres were prepared by encapsulating the recombinant TIMP-1 adenovirus into biodegradable PELA. The particle size, viral load, encapsulation efficiency and in-vitro release were measured. Microspheres were used to infect HepG2 cells, then infection efficiency was examined under a fluorescent microscope and ultrastructural changes assessed by TEM. Expression of TIMP-1 mRNA in HepG2 cells was examined by semi-quantitative RT-PCR and proliferation by MTT and cell growth curve assays. Results: We successfully prepared microspheres encapsulating recombinant TIMP-1 adenovirus with a diameter of $1.965{\mu}m$, an encapsulation efficiency of 60.0%, a viral load of $10.5{\times}10^8/mg$ and approximate 60% of virus release within 120 h, the total releasing time of which was longer than 240 h. The microspheres were confirmed to be non-toxic with blank microspheres. Infected HepG2 cells could stably maintain in-vitro expression of TIMP-1, with significantly effects on biological behaviour Conclusion: PELA microspheres encapsulating a recombinant TIMP-1 adenovirus can markedly inhibit the proliferation of HepG2 cells, which provides an experimental basis for polymer/chemistry-based gene therapy of hepatocellular carcinomas.
