  • There are many numerical methods to solve large-scale fluid-structure interaction(FSI) problems. However, these methods require very fine mesh to achieve the reasonable numerical accuracy and stability due to the concentrated and volatile hydrodynamic pressure caused by the liquid sloshing. Consequently, the numerical analysis targeting for the long-period time response with the desired numerical accuracy Is very highly time-consuming. The aim of this paper is to suggest a new method to analyze the hydroelastic behavior of the LNGC containment by using the global-local numerical approach. The reliability of the presented method is firstly examined, and then its efficiency is demonstrated by presenting that the long-period local responses of the LNGC containment are obtained with relatively short CPU time.

  • A new state-of-the-art sloshing research equipment has developed to perform the model test of LNG tanks for the safer design of LNG cargo containment system in violent sloshing phenomena. This sloshing test system has developed by the Samsung Ship Model Basin (SSMB) and thoroughly verified. The accuracy of the motion of hexapods equipment for the excitation of a model tank has been verified. The maximum displacement in six degrees of freedom, harmonic motions of various frequencies, and irregular motions in wave conditions are measured and compared with input signals. In order to confirm the reliability of the post-processing program for measured impact pressure, the post-processed results were compared with those of the reference institute. A benchmarking sloshing test using 1/50 scale model of 160K LNGC tank was conducted for the verification of the whole testing system. The partial filing levels were considered. As a result of the experiment, it is confirmed that the results are in good agreement with those of the reference institute.

  • Recently, ship owners have been requiring the assessment of the maneuverability of a twin-screw ship under machinery failures. In this paper, we are only focused on the propulsion failure among propulsion failure, power supply failure, steering system failure etc. First of all, the mathematical model for the twin-screw 174K LNGC is verified by comparing the simulated results for $35^{\circ}$ turning test, $10^{\circ}/10^{\circ}$ zigzag test and $20^{\circ}/20^{\circ}$ zigzag test under normal operating condition and those obtained from free running model tests. And, sea trial results of 216K LNGC under single propeller failure are compared with those of 174K LNGC under identical condition to verify the proposed method to predict maneuverability under single propeller failure. After the straight line maneuver is simulated under the single propeller failure, the speed and equilibrated heading and rudder deflection angles at steady state are predicted. After the IMO maneuvering tests are simulated under the single propeller failure, the results are reviewed to investigate the maneuvering characteristics due to the failure.

  • The present paper is concerned to the thermal analysis during the cool-down period of 138,000 m$^3$class GTT MARK-III membrane type LNG carrier servicing with LNG from the Middle East to Korea. It is the cool-down period that cools the insulation wall and the gas in LNG tank to avoid the thermal shock as the start of loading of -162$^{\circ}C$ LNG. For six hours of the standard cool-down period, the temperature of NG falls down from -4$0^{\circ}C$ to -13$0^{\circ}C$ and especially the mean temperature of the 1st barrier in the top side insulation wall falls down from -38.38$^{\circ}C$ to -122.42$^{\circ}C$ in case of IMO design condition. By the 3-D numerical calculation about the cargo tank and the cofferdam, the temperature variation in hulls and insulations is precisely predicted in this paper. And the mean temperature variation of gas is calculated as the function of the spraying rate by the heat balance model during the cool-down period.

  • Low-frequency damping characteristics of side-by-side moored LNG-FPSO and LNGC arc investigated through a series of free decay model tests in calm water and under wind load condition. It is shown that low frequency damping of LNGC changes dramatically, sway damping increases more than six times for 4m distance condition while it decreases by $30\%$ for 20m distance compared with a single LNGC case. Simulation using the experimental data enhances the results, which demonstrates the necessity of experimental low-frequency damping coefficients for simulation of side-by-side vessels motion behavior.

  • This study is concerned with the thermal analysis during the cool-down period of 135,000 $m^3$ class GT-96 membrane type LNG carrier under IMO design condition. The cool-down is performed to cool the insulation wall and the natural gas in cargo tank for six hours to avoid the thermal shock at the start of loading of $-163^{\circ}C$ LNG. During the cool-down period, the spraying rate for the NG cooling decreases as the temperature of NG falls clown from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $-130^{\circ}C$ and the spraying rate for the insulation wall cooling increases as the temperature gradient of the insulation wall is large. It was confirmed that there existed the largest temperature decrease at the 1 st barrier and 1st insulation, which are among the insulation wall, especially in the top side of the insulation wall. By the 3-D numerical calculation about the cargo tank and the cofferdam during the cool-down period, the temperature variation in hulls and insulations is precisely predicted.

  • Ship owners had pursued higher benefits by demanding the new design and construction of ships with higher operational efficiency. There was a necessity for shipyards to suggest a more economical design and advanced operation concept in order to meet the demands. Especially, since BOG combustion and activation of the re-liquefaction unit had to be taken into account in ship design in addition to fuel oil and gas consumption, the evaluation of the operating efficiency considering the technological trends was necessary. In this paper, it was aimed to study the design philosophy and operation strategy by considering the effect of fuel oil and gas consumption, BOG combustion, and activation of the re-liquefaction unit on the operating cost for laden voyage according to ship speed, BOR, and activation of the re-liquefaction unit. For this purpose, the costs were acquired by conducting the sailing simulation of an LNGC based on a mathematical model including the maneuvering equations of motion. The design philosophy and operation strategy was reviewed in terms of the operating cost.

  • This paper presents hull stress monitoring system installed in LNGC damaged by a Typhoon Elongation/contraction of removed areas has been assessed in terms of possible residual stress that will take place in replaced blocks when the applied load is removed. The bending moment of a vessel changes actually in terms of loss of longitudinal members and the change of weight distribution in repair procedure. The change of bending moment affects mainly in hull stress of longitudinal members. Hull stress monitoring system was installed on upper deck to prove LNGC stable in the criteria to be less than 40MPa during the period of repair procedure. A temperature measuring system was also installed to exclude the additional stress due to thermal effect from the measured hull stress. As a result, the hull stress was modified with the data measured by the temperature measuring system. This hull stress considering thermal effect was used as a guide stress to check the safety of LNGC during the period of repair procedure.
