  • Because of environmental regulations in emissions control area, the demand for ships to use LNG as fuel is increasing. Orders for domestic shipbuilders to produce LNG carriers are steadily increasing. However, major appliances such as spray pump, main cargo pump and others have been relied on imports. Therefore, development of pump motor using at cryogenic temperature is necessary. Operating temperature of an induction motor is at $-163^{\circ}C$. At this low temperature, the resistivity of a motor coil is quite different from normal ones, and so does the torque characteristics of motor. This paper presents a designing method of a cryogenic induction motor for LNG pump. The variation of resistivity of motor coil is considered in the design process. The heat source such as core-loss, hysteresis-loss and copper-loss are analyzed to prevent the LNG evaporation which may cause the motor failure.

  • The Boil-off gas (BOG) generation during the voyage is inevitable since Natural Gas (NG) in normally liquefied below -160 degree C in atmosphere condition and small heat ingress due to relatively hot outside keeps evaporating continuously. The one of major issue in LNG carriers is to handle generated BOG from cargo tank. The generated BOG affects to increase the cargo tank pressure and Gas Management System (GMS) for LNG carriers is closely related to cargo tank pressure maintenance. Economically, BOG is generally used as fuel in LNG carrier. Newly developed GMS for LNG carrier in boiler propulsion system, VaCo System, not only accomplish automatic control in GMS but also ensure safer operation.

  • Recently, various dynamic risk analysis methods have been suggested for estimating the risk index by predicting the possibility of accidents and damage. It is necessary to maintain and support the safety system for responding to accidents by continuously updating the probability of accidents and the results of accidents, which are quantitative standards of ship risk. In this study, when a LNG leakage that may occur in the LN G Fuel Gas Supply System (FGSS) room during LN G bunkering operation, a reliability physical model was prepared by the change in monitoring data as physical parameters to estimate the accident probability. The scenario in which LNG leakage occur were configured with FT (Fault Tree), and the coefficient of the covariate model and Weibull distribution was estimated based on the monitoring data. The possibility of an LNG leakage, which is the top event of FT, was confirmed by changes in time and monitoring data. A method for estimating the LNG leakage based on the reliability physical analysis is proposed, which supports fast decision-making by identifying the potential LNG leakage at the accident.

  • To extract hydrogen for stack, fuels such as LPG and LNG were reformed in the fuel processor, which is comprised of desulfurizer, reformer, shift converter, CO remover and steam generator. All elements of fuel processor are integrated in a single package. Highly active catalysts (desulfurizing adsorbent, reforming catalyst, CO shift catalyst, CO removal catalyst) and the various burners were developed and evaluated in this study. The performance of the developed catalysts and the commercial ones was similar. 1 kW, 5 kW class fuel processor systems using the developed catalyst and burner showed efficiency of 75 %(LHV, for LNG). The start-up time of the 1 kW class fuel processor was less than 50 minutes and its volume including insulation was about 30 l. The start-up time of 3 kW and 5 kW class fuel processors with the volume of 90 l and 150 l, respectively, was about 60 minutes. In the case of LPG fuel, efficiency, volume and start-up time of 1kW class fuel processor showed 73 %(LHV), < 60 l and < 60 min, respectively. Advanced fuel processor showed more highly efficiency and shorter start-up time due to the improvement of heat exchanger and operating method. 1 kW and 3 kW class fuel processors have been evaluated for reliability and durability including with on/off test of developed catalysts and burner.

  • Deactivation of SCR catalysts applied in coal, orimulsion, and LNG power plants in Korea were studied for the regeneration of the deactivated catalyst. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, ICP-AES, BET and SEM, and were examined for ammonia SCR. Deactivation of SCR catalyst applied in coal power plant was mainly caused by the blockade of the pore due to the deposition of sulfate and particulate related to the ingredients of the fuel. The surface area of SCR catalyst applied in orimulsion power plant decreased considerably by the accumulation of the compounds of vanadium, sulfur, and magnesium on the surface of the catalyst. The compounds of vanadium and sulfur were related to the ingredients of the fuel, and the compound of magnesium was related to the additive of the fuel. The activity of the deactivated catalyst for ammonia SCR, however, decreased slightly. Despite the long use for more than two-year, deactivation of SCR catalyst applied in LNG power plants hardly occurred.

  • It is envisaged that the effect of increasingly stricter air emissions legislation implemented through IMO Annex VI and other local air quality controls, together with favorable financial conditions for the use of natural gas instead of liquid fuel oil as a bunker fuel, will see an increasing number of DF engine and single gas fuel engine applications to LNG carriers and other vessel types. As part of provision for the current international movements in the shipping industry to reduce GHG emission in air, new design concepts using natural gas as an alternative fuel source for propulsion of large commercial vessels, have been developed by shipyards and research institutes. In this study, an explosion analysis for a gas supply machinery room of LNG-fuelled container ship is presented. The gas fuel concept is employed for the high pressure ME-GI where a leakage in the natural gas double supply pipe to the engines is the subject of the present analysis. The consequences of a leak are simulated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools to predict typical leak scenarios, gas cloud sizes and possible explosion pressures. In addition, capacity of the structure which is subject to explosion loads has been assessed.

  • LNG is being spotlighted as a clean marine fuel because of recent trend in reinforcement of marine environmental regulation. In this paper, demand prospect of LNG bunkering for Ulsan port is carried out to analgize the possibility of commercialization of floating LNG bunkering terminal. Environmental analysis for LNG bunkering and LNG bunkering trends of competitive ports in the world are considered to draw out the prospection of LNG bunkering demand in Ulsan. As a result, car carrie and oil carrier were expected to have more possibility in switching to LNG fuelled ship. The LNG bunkering demand in Ulsan. The LNG bunkering demand in Ulsan port was expected to be about from 650,000 ton to 900,000 ton in 2030 and Ulsan port is prospected to be a good port for FLBT business in th future.

  • Two- and Three- dimensional numerical simulations are carried out to understand the combustion characteristics of LNG-fueled gas turbine combustor for power generation using imported and domestic natural gases. Reacting flow characteristics of the swirl stabilized natural gas combustor were understood from the numerical results with the flow conditions selected from the gas turbine operation data. The thermal influences of different natural gases were very small and the fuel composition and flow rate were considered to be tuned well. The flow structures of the recirculation and combustion region was understood from the comparison of the two- and three-dimensional results. The complexity of the three-dimensional swirl flows inside the gas turbine combustor with multiple swirlers was understood those resulting from the interactions of the stage and pilot burners.
