  • Concrete is a material that will crack during its service life by its very nature. For bridge decks this is especially significant as these cracks allow accelerated ingress of chlorides and the subsequent corrosion of the reinforcing steel and deck deterioration. Very-early strength latex-modified concrete (below ; VES-LMC) was developed in order to realize early-opening-to-traffic bridge deck concrete. Although there has been little research to document the degree of cracking in VES-LMC overlay, there has been a general perception among highway agencies that overlay cracking of VES-LMC, particularly early-age cracking, is a one of problems which should be solved. The purpose of this study was to analyze the cause of map, transverse and longitudinal cracking in VES-LMC and to provide a control methods for minimizing the occurrence of cracks. The proposed prevention against map and transverse cracking was verified by field applications. VES cement was modified, the unit cement contents was reduced into $360kg/m^3$ from $390kg/m^3$, the maximum size of coarse aggregate was increase into 19mm from 13mm, wire mesh and steel fibers were incorporated in concrete mixture.

  • Within the context of the hugely successful SAGE-LMC and SAGE-SMC surveys, Spitzer photometry observations of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds have revealed millions of infrared point sources in each galaxy. The brightest infrared sources are generally dust producing and mass-losing evolved stars, and several tens of thousands of such stars have been classified. After photometrically classifying these objects, the dust production by several kinds of evolved stars - such as Asymptotic Giant Branch stars and Red Supergiants - can be determined. SAGE-Spec is the spectroscopic follow-up to the SAGE-LMC survey, and it has obtained Spitzer-IRS $5-40{\mu}m$ spectroscopy of about 200 sources in the LMC. Combined with archival data from other programs, observations at a total of ~1000 pointings have been obtained in the LMC, while ~250 IRS pointings were observed in the SMC. Of these, a few hundred pointings represent dust producing and mass-losing evolved stars, covering a range in colors, luminosities, and thus mass-loss rates. Red Supergiants and O-rich and C-rich AGB stars - the main dust producers - are well represented in the spectroscopic sample. This paper will summarize what we know about the mineralogy of dust producing evolved stars, and discuss their relative importance in the total dust budget.

  • We present photometric solutions of the 26,212 eclipsing binaries discovered in the LMC by Graczyk et al. (2011). They published that 70 percent of a total are detached systems. Another 25 and 5 percent are semi-detached and contact binaries, respectively. We discovered that 21 percent of 26,121 eclipsing binary stars are eccentric orbit systems. The binary star distribution in the LMC is different from those of the Galactic center direction (Bade window). It is very interesting that there are only 5 of 357 (2 percent) stars have eccentric orbit in the Galactic Center (Kang 2011). We selected the light curve of 18,274 detached systems. Then we estimated the fundamental parameters on the basis of their photometric solutions and the semi-major-axis (a) assuming the distance modulus to the LMC~18.50. We compared the estimated fundamental parameters with an empirical mass-luminosity relation and consistency between mass-radius relation base on stellar evolution model in the low metallicity (Z=0.008) by Bertelli et al. (2009). This method allows for independent determine of the fundamental parameters of the eclipsing binaries in the LMC without the radial velocity curves.

  • Latex Modified Concrete(LMC) has been widely used for the pavement of highway bridges over the past 35years around the world since it is more resistant to the intrusion of chloride ions, has higher tensile, compressive, and flexural strength, and has greater freeze-thaw resistance. However, in Korea, it has not been introduced to fields due to higher initial construction cost for its overlay compared with that of conventional pavement materials. Due to durable characteristics, it should be noted that the LMC may be more cost-effective than conventional pavements such as asphalt pavement, when life-cycle cost(LCC) concept is considered. The objective of this study is intended to suggest a practical LCC analysis model for pavement projects and to demonstrate relative cost-effectiveness of the LMC overlays in comparison with conventional pavement techniques. It may be stated that the procedure proposed in this study may be utilized for making optimal decision on cost-effective pavement design.

  • Drying shrinkage cracking which may be caused by the relatively large specific surface is a matter of grave concern for latex modified concrete(LMC) overlay and rapid-setting cement latex modified concrete(RSLMC) overlay. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to study the drying shrinkage properties of LMC and RSLMC with the main experimental variables such as cement types(ordinary portland cement, rapid setting cement), latex contents(0, 5, 10, 15, 20%), W-C ratios, and curing days at a same controlled environment of 60% of relative humidity and $20^{\circ}C$ of temperature. Test results revealed that the drying shrinkage of latex modified concrete(LMC), rapid-setting cement latex modified concrete(RSLMC) was considerably lower than that of ordinary portland cement concrete(OPC), rapid-setting cement concrete(RSC), respectively. This may be attributed to the interlocking of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles, water retention due to hydrophobic and colloidal properties of the latexes, resulting in reduced water evaporation.

  • An increase in the amount of cracking in repaired concrete bridge decks using VES-LMC(Very Early Strength - Latex Modified Concrete ; below VES-LMC) has been noticed by Yun et al(1). Literature indicates that indeed many concrete bridge decks develop transverse cracking, most developing at early ages(3~7 days), many right after construction. The purpose of this study was to establish prevention of map, transverse and longitudinal cracking in VES-LMC and to provide a control methods for minimizing the occurrence of cracks. A series of variable combinations were attempted. As a results, the proposed prevention against map and transverse cracking was verified because no crack were occurred until 90 days after overlay.

  • We present the recent results of an HI aperture synthesis mosaic of the Large Magellanic Cloud(LMC), made by combining data from 1344 separate pointing centers using the Australia Telescope Compact Array(ATCA). The resolution of the mosaiced images is 1'.0 (15 pc, using a distance to the LMC of 50 kpc). In contrast with its appearance at other wavelengths, the LMC is remarkably symmetric in HI on the largest scales, with the bulk of the HI residing in a disk of diameter 7.3 kpc. Outer spiral structure is clearly seen, though the features appear due to differential rotation, therefore transient in nature. A good correlation is seen between the supershells previously identified in Halpha (e.g. Meaburn 1980) and HI structures.

  • Latex modification of concrete provides the material with higher flexural strength. This increase in flexural strength can attribute to the crack-arresting action of polymer in concrete, and also to the bonding they provide between the matrix and aggregates. This experimental study presents the fracture behavior of 12 flexural reinforced concrete beams repaired or strengthened by latex-modified concrete with the main experimental variables such as overlay thickness, strength thickness, and shear reinforcement. The results are as follow: All beam specimens having shear reinforcement were failed by delamination rupture at concrete interface at about 80% of ultimate loading after flexural cracking. All specimens overlayed and strengthened by latex-modified concrete (LMC) showed higher ultimate flexural strength than OPC control specimen, but lower than LMC control specimen. This increase in flexural strength could attribute to the high bonding they provide between the matrix and aggregates. All specimens except two shear unreinforced showed quite similar and consistent displacement behavior. The effect of overlay and strength thickness on the load-displacement relationship were a small at this study.

  • Many concrete bridge decks develop transverse cracking shortly after construction. These cracks accelerate corrosion of reinforcing steel and lead to concrete deterioration, damage to components beneath the deck, unsightly appearance. These cracks shorten the service life and increase maintenance costs of bridge structures. In this study, VES-LMC overlay, which provides the same benefits as a conventional overlay, is designed to cure very quickly. Although the materials for VES overlays are more expensive, the cost is more than offset by the savings on traffic control and work zone safety measures. Otherwise, reaction of hydration occurs very rapidly in beginning step(concrete placing). As a results, thermal cracking can be occur by thermal stress in accordance with hydration-heat The purpose of this study was to estimate diagnosis of crack occurrence of VES-LMC through field tests at early-age.
