Black pepper (family Piperaceae), is called king of spices because it is one of the oldest spice and alone accounts for about 35% of the world's total spice trade. The pepper is used in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of various ailments particularly neurological, broncho-pulmonary and gastrointestinal disorders. Pepper has also been reported to have various pharmacological actions but recently, it is highlighted as a bioavailability enhancer. This results in higher plasma concentration of drugs, nutrients, ions and other xenobiotics, rendering them more bioavailable for physiological as well as pharmacological actions in the body. Numerous scientific studies reported that piperine; a main bioactive compound of pepper, is responsible for its bioavailability enhancing property. It's a well known fact that pepper enhances bioavailability by inhibition of microsomal enzyme system but other mechanisms are also responsible to acts as a bioavailability enhancer. The brief overview of the mechanism of action of pepper as well as its applications as bioavailability enhancer is given in the present article.

This study was performed to examine the feasibility of using the low plane of nutrition (LPN) as a means of improving the meat quality of crossbred finishing pigs with a medium weight gain potential. Twenty-four barrows and 24 gilts weighing approximately 48 kg were placed on LPN [a finisher (2.86 Mcal ME/kg and 0.67% lysine) for 91 d] or on a high plane of nutrition [HPN; a commercial grower for 38 d and a finisher (3.35 Mcal ME/kg and 0.9% lysine) for 46 d]. Five barrows and five gilts per treatment weighing approximately 125 kg were slaughtered after the indicated days on the respective diets, followed by physicochemical analysis and sensory evaluation on their muscles. Overall average daily gain was 12.6% less in the LPN group vs. the HPN group (p<0.05). The redness ($a^*$) of fresh longissimus muscle (LM) from the loin as well as from Boston butt was greater in the LPN group vs. HPN whereas the shear force for fresh LM from these primals and semimembranosus muscle was lower in the former. In sensory evaluation for cooked LM, no treatment effect was detected in any of the quality traits examined, except for a lower color score in the LPN vs. HPN group. Results suggest that meat quality of the finishing pigs can be improved to some extent by using LPN. However, the present pigs, whose backfat thickness was 24 mm at 125 kg, are thought not to be lean enough to be fattened over 120 kg.
This study was performed to investigate the influence of dietary and extract foods from A. capilliaris Thunberg on plasma and liver lipid metabolism in male Sprague-Dawley rats. For the experiment of liver and plasma lipid metabolism, Rats were find diets containing normal concentrations of fat or high concentrations of lard and two different preparations of A. capillaris Thunberg ; control diet (group C),50 mg/kg body weight A. capillary Thunberg methanol extract (group M), 6 g/kg diet A. capillary Thunberg dried powder (group P), high lard control diet (group L), 50 mg/kg body weight A. capillaris Thunberg with high lard (group LM) and 6 g/kg diet A. capillary Thunberg with hi\ulcorner lard (group LP). Effects of A. capillary Thunberg on plasma total cholesterol. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, Atherogenic index, triglyceride, plasma and liver peroxide contents, fatty acid composition of liver lipid and the distribution of fat droplets of liver. Supplementation of A. capillaris Thunberg resulted in lower plasma cholesterol, atherogenic index and triglyceride, and higher HDL-cholesterol in rats find high lard diets. However, these effects were not observed with low level of fat (groups C, M and P). A shift caused by feeding high lard diets in increased plasma and liver peroxides, saturated fatty arid composition of liver lipid and the more frequent distribution of fat droplets in liver could be reversed by feeding A. capillary Thunberg. This study suggests that A. capillary Thunberg co alter lipid metabolism in plasma and liver.
The characteristics of the flow and energy conversion in OMACON liquid-metal MHD system are investigated. Numerical simulation of two-phase flow in the OMACON system without magnetic field was carried out by the Phoenics code and the energy conversion characteristics are studied in association with the fact that the mechanical energy loss at the nozzle of the OMACON system are to be converted into electrical energy. In this system, working fluid (gas) is injected through the mixer located at the bottom of the riser, and is mixed with hot liquid metal. Therefore in the riser two-phase flow is developed under the influence of the gravity. In this study, the interaction between the gas and liquid is considered by the use of IPSA(InterPhase Slip Algorithm) where standard drag coefficient has been used. It has been assumed that in the flow regime the liquid is continuous and the gas is dispersed. For the liquid and gas, the continuity equations, momentum equations and energy equations are solved respectively in association with void fraction in the flow field. In order to calculate the energy conversion efficiency, firstly the ratio of the mechanical energy loss of liquid metal flow at the nozzle to the input thermal energy is considered. Secondly flow pattern of liquid metal in the generator has been analyzed, and the characteristics of the conversion of the mechanical energy into the electrical energy has been investigated. For an representative case where Hartmann number is 540 and magnetic field is 0.35 T, the present analysis shows that the energy conversion efficiency is 0.653. This result is considered to be reasonable in comparison with published experimental results.

Polymer light emitting diode (PLED) with an ITO/MEH-PPV/Al structure were prepared by spin coating method on the ITO (indium tin oxide)/glass substrates, using poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexoxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene (MEH-PPV) as the light emitting material. The dependence of heat treatment on the electrical and optical properties for the prepared PLED samples were investigated. The luminance decreased greatly from 630 cd/$\m^2$ to 280 cd/$\m^2$ at 10V input voltage as the heating temperature increased from $65^{\circ}C$ to $170^{\circ}C$. In addition, the luminance efficiency was found to be about 2 lm/W for the sample heat treated at $65^{\circ}C$. These results may be related to the interface roughness and/or the formation of an insulation layer, which is caused by the reaction between electrode and MEH-PPV organic luminescent film layer.

The electrochemical properties of the $AB_2$-type (Zr-Ti-V-Ni-Cr-Co-Mn) metal hydride electrodes prepared by ball milling with $AB_5-type\{(LM)Ni_{3.6}Al_{0.4}Co_{0.7}Mn_{0.3}\}$(LM : Lanthanum-rich mischmetal) alloy powder as a surface activator were investigated. By ball milling with $AB_5$ type alloy powder, the activation of $AB_2$ type metal hydride electrode was accelerated resulting in an increase of discharge capacity from 35% to 85% of the maximum capacity at the first cycle. As the amount of surface activator increased the activation rate increased, whereas the discharge capacity increased with 10wt% and decreased with 20wt% addition of the surface activator. When the amount of the surface activator was kept constant as 10wt%, the discharge capacity and the activation rate increased with ball milling time up to 20 hours. However beyond 20 hours of ball milling time, they decreased drastically due to the nano-crystallization or amorphorzation of the alloy powder.

This paper proposes a six-color separation method of reducing unnecessary usage of colorants based on the limitation of total colorant amount and dot visibility ordering. First, the CIELAB values of input RGB image are estimated through the color-mixing model and compared with pre-calculated CIELAB values corresponding to all combination of CMYKlclm colorants with a constraint of color difference, thereby selecting initial CMYKlclm candidates. Next, the limitation on total colorant amount Is imposed on initial CMYKlclm candidates to remove the excessive amounts of colorants, and then final CMYKlclm candidates are determined by minimizing the usage of light cyan and light magenta in the dark region based on the dot visibility ordering of C, M, Y, K, lc, and lm. Through the experiment, the proposed method is shown to reduce the excessive amount of colorants with preserving good image quality.
This study is concerned with alterations in chromosomes (numbers and morphology) when the culture of Chinese hamster cells (FAF-28 strain) was treated by steroids, testosterone and DOC. 1. In 200 cells of normal untreated cells as control population the chromosome of stemline was decided as which was contained in 158 cells ; that is , in 79 percent of the population. The average chromosome number in above 20 cells observed was calculated as 23.95 with minimum limit at 20 and maximum limit at 70. 2. Many different chromosome numbers, ranging from 19 to 352 were observed in the 200 cells treated by testosterone. The diploid number of 22 showed the peak of variation curve was counted in 71 cells (35.5%) and an average chromosome number of stemline was 22 which was counted in 74 cells (37%). While all of the chromosome number of stemline was 22 which was counted in 74 cells (37%). While all of the chromosome numbers in the 200 cells observed ranged from 20 to 181 , an average chromosome number was also found to be 30.09. 4. The chromosome component in the cultured normal FAF-28 cells with 22 diploid chromosomeswas as follows ; 9a) 2 paris were long and metacentric (LM), (b) 3 pairs were medium length and metacentric (MM), (c) 3 pairs were small and subtelocentric (SS) and (d) 3 pairs were small and metacentric (SM). 5. The twenty cells with 44 chromosomes were selected at random from each cell population treated with testosterone and DOC , so that chromosome idiogram and morphology could be studies. In the twenty cells of the testosterone treated population the average ratio of above four groups, LM ; MM;Ss:SM, was found to be 8.6 : 10.8:13.5:10.7. On the other hand, the average ratio in the same number of cells of the DOC treated one was 7.7 :11.4:12.5:12.7. 6. The five types of the altered chromosomes morphologically in the hundred cells selected at random from each cell population treated by testosterone and DOC were observed (Type I-V). The thirty-one altered chromosomes were found to be in the testosterone treated cell population and the sixteen in DOC treated.

Objective: Early environmental enrichment in life can improve cognition in animals. The effect of prenatal auditory stimulation on learning ability and fear level in chick embryos remained unexplored. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of prenatal auditory stimulation on the learning ability and fear level of chicks. Methods: A total of 450 fertilized eggs were randomly divided into 5 groups, including control group (C), low-sound intensity music group (LM), low-sound intensity noise group (LN), high-sound intensity noise group (HN) and high-sound intensity music group (HM). From the 10th day of embryonic development until hatching, group LM and group LN received 65 to 75 dB of music and noise stimulation. Group HN and group HM received 85 to 95 dB of noise and music stimulation, and group C received no additional sound. At the end of incubation, the one-trial passive avoidance learning (PAL) task and tonic immobility (TI) tests were carried out, and the serum corticosterone (CORT) and serotonin (5-HT) concentrations were determined. Results: The results showed that compared with the group C, 65 to 75 dB of music and noise stimulation did not affect the PAL avoidance rate (p>0.05), duration of TI (p>0.05) and the concentration of CORT (p>0.05) and 5-HT (p>0.05) in chicks. However, 85 to 95 dB of music and noise stimulation could reduce duration of TI (p<0.05) and the concentration of CORT (p<0.05), but no significant effect was observed on the concentration of 5-HT (p>0.05) and PAL avoidance rate (p>0.05). Conclusion: Therefore, the prenatal auditory stimulation of 85 to 95 dB can effectively reduce the fear level of chicks while it does not affect the learning ability.

Two red emitters, 2-(7-(4-(diphenylamino)styryl)-2-methyl-4H-chromen-4-ylidene)malonitrile (Red 1) and 2-(7-(julolidylvinyl)-2-methyl-4H-chromen-4-ylidene)malonitrile (Red 2) have been designed and synthesized for application as red-light emitters in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). In these red emitters, the julolidine and triphenyl moieties were introduced to the emitting core as electron donors, and the chrome-derived electron accepting groups such as 2-methyl-(4H-chromen-4-ylidene)malononitrile were connected to electron donating moieties by vinyl groups. To explore the electroluminescence properties of these materials, multilayered OLEDs using red materials (Red 1 and Red 2) as dopants in $Alq_3$ host were fabricated. In particular, a device using Red 1 as the dopant material showed maximum luminous efficiencies and power efficiencies of 0.82 cd/A and 0.33 lm/W at $20mA/cm^2$. Also, a device using Red 2 as a dopant material presented the CIEx,y coordinates of (0.67, 0.32) at 7.0 V.
