  • Bacterial fruit blotch(BFB) of cucurbits caused by Acidovorax citrulli(Acc) continues to diminish fruit yields. The aim of this study was to address whether two genetically distinct populations of Acc are present in watermelon-growing fields in Korea. For this purpose, we used the enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus polymerase chain reaction(ERIC-PCR) profiling and substrate-utilization profiles. According to the results of ERIC-PCR, group I and II strains showed clearly differentiated PCR-based fingerprinting profiles. Differences between group I and II strains included amplification of unique, group-specific DNA fragments such as the 1.3-, 0.28-, and 0.25-kb fragments in ERIC-PCR. Acc stains belonging to group I did not use L-leucine, whereas group II strains did use the substrate. Our results support the genetic differentiation of Acc strains into two groups and demonstrate that Acc strains from both groups are previously existed in watermelon-growing fields in Korea. Information about the genetic diversity of Acc under the present study will help scientists and managers form strategies to control BFB.

  • This study is on the expressive will of human beings by way of examining turtle patterns. Turtle represents spiritual, incantatory implications and the idea1s of long life and of fortune. From ancient to the present the turtle patterns have expressed various kinds of arts on these concepts. The researchs on the examples of turtle patterns are summed up as follows. 1. Single form of turtle shows a turtle wrapped by snakes and is generally regarded as a symbol of long life with respect to the mysteries of the Tao. 2. HyunMu type is of an imaginary animal which is wrapped by snakes. 3. Turtle shell type is hexagon accumulated 1ike successive bee-hives.

  • Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is a genetic disorder with deficiency of Iysomal enzymes needed for the degradation of glycosaminoglycans(GAGs). This storage disease is characterized by intra-lysosomal accumulation of GAGs. progressive mental and physical deterioration. multi-organ failure and premature death. Quality of life (QOL) is very low in MPS patients. The MOS 36-ltem Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) was designed to measure the eight (8) dimensions of health in clinical and general population settings. (omitted)

  • Cerebral ischemia, the most prevalent form of clinical stroke, is a medical problem of the first magnitude. Substantial efforts are being made to develop drugs which will protect the brain from the neurodegeneration that follows ischemic stroke. However, no medical treatment is currently approved for the treatment of stroke to reduce brain infarction or neurological disability beyond tissue plasminogen activator. (omitted)

  • new species Iotrochota rutzleri n. sp. (Demospongiae: Poecilosclerida: Iotrochotidae) was collected from intertidal zone, Sinyangri, Seongsanpo, Jejudo Island, Korea during 2008-2009. Iotrochota rutzleri n. sp. is similar to I. baculifera Ridley, 1884 in composition of spicules and skeletal structure. However, it is different in size of spicules, growth form and colour. All spicules of this new species are smaller than those of the latter.

  • A new species of the family Thorectidae, Narrabeena nigra n. sp. is described. This species was collected from the front of Songaksan, Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jejudo Island, Korea. Narrabeena nigra n. sp. is similar to Narrabeena lamellate (Bergquist, 1980) with uncored primary and secondary fibres and an unarmoured surface. They differ in growth form, colour, and fibres.

  • For the nitrate removal in recirculating aquaculture system, a denitrifying bacterium, Pseudomonas fluorescens, was isolated from municipal sewage and the cells were immobilized in modified-polyvinly alchol (PVA) gel beads. The immobilized cells in both the fixed-and fluidized-bed reactors showed 98% of denitrification efficiency with 6hr HRT, and the removal efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) was above 90%. Form scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation, it was known that biofilm formed in fixed-bed reactor was thicker than that formed in fluidized-bed reactor as operation time passed.

  • The results obtained form this study are as follows(For examples : ) 1. The tea wares for hwarang were entirely different from those appearing in Lu yu's ch'a ching as they were creatively developed by hwarang to suit outdoor sue in their outdoor activities as a disciplinary training. 2. In analysis of Korea's traditional ceramics starting for koryo down to choson in its pattern, most Korean ceramics corresponded with the golden rule completely and the rest were quite close to it.

  • Studies on the glucose isomerase produced by alkalophilic Streptomyces sp. B-2. Glucose Isomerase (E. C. 5.3.1.5) which reversibly catalyzes reaction between D-glucose and D-fructose was demonstrated in cell free extracts of alkalophilic Streptomyces sp. B-2 isolated form soil. The maximum enzyme activity was found at glucose concentration 4(g/$\ell$) , xylose concentration 6(g/$\ell$), magnesium ion 1.0(g/$\ell$), yeast extract concentration 2.0(g/$\ell$), peptone concentration 3(g/$\ell$).

  • The efficient production of glucose isomerase (G. I0.) produced form Arthrobacter sp. L-3 was studied. The optimum culture time of the enzyme was 40hr. The maximum enzyme activity was found at glucose concentration 1%. G. I. activity did not affect inoculum size. The glucose isomerase activity was strongly influenced by the addition of glucose.
