  • In this paper, we propose a digital method for transmitting audio signals using LED visible light communication system. In the proposed method, we compare the method for transmitting audio signal in analog signal and the method for transmitting by digital signal. When amplifying the audio sound and transmitting the analog signal using the LED visible light communication, attenuation corresponding to the transmission distance occurs, and there is a disadvantage that it is noisy. In order to overcome this, we propose a method for transmitting digital audio signals. The proposed method has the advantage of reducing the influence of noise, but it turned out that it is affected much by the LED blinking speed. Various methods to overcome this need to be continuously studied.

  • In this study, we analyzed an outdoor visible light communication system and implemented it through a simulation. We designed a Reed-Solomon encoder, a variable interleaver structure, and set it to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.15.7 PHY I specification mode. We also analyzed the performance of an additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel environment using a root-raised-cosine (RRC) filter, implemented a MATLAB simulation and analyzed its performance. The results showed a requirement for an additional signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of approximately 1.5 dB in a 3-ray multipath visible light channel environment than in an AWGN environment.

  • This paper proposed the design of a new window signage system architecture, which utilized a window of a building, with attached LED for visible light communication. In this paper, the proposed method using the LED strip to transmit light data and receive the data through a HMD with a smart device camera. The LED strip attached to the existing building window, as a part of semi-transparent signage. Semi-transparent signage based on a controllable LED strip-modules and attached to the window used to provide entertainment contents and the information service to people through optical camera communication (OCC) as well. Also, this work suggests using the camera supplied Head Mounted Device (HMD) as an OCC receiver. The LED attached window signage system structure described in this paper can be utilized in various buildings infrastructure like house, shopping areas, industrial building, etc.

  • Recently, VLC(Visible Light Communication) fusing with LED(Light Emitting Diode) used in indoor lighting and wireless communication technology has attracted attention. However, the VLC can communicate only within the coverage to measure the optical signal and the communication disconnection phenomenon is occur in the NLoS(Non-Line-of-Sight) area. In this paper, we propose VLC relay module to extend the coverage of VLC and improve the communication disconnection phenomenon in NLoS area. The proposed VLC relay module transmits the packet received from the transmitter to the VLC relay module and receiver. The experiment was carried out by installing one VLC transmitter and three VLC relay modules, communication coverage expansion and the improvement of communication disconnection phenomenon in the NLoS were confirmed by the increase of the VLC relay module. Also, we confirmed that the optical signal measurement performance is improved 2.4 times by using the dual sampling method.

  • Wi-Fi fingerprinting system is a very popular positioning method used in indoor spaces. The system depends on Wi-Fi Received Signal Strength (RSS) from Access Points (APs). However, the Wi-Fi RSS is changeable by multipath fading effect and interference due to walls, obstacles and people. Therefore, the Wi-Fi fingerprinting system produces low position accuracy. Also, Wi-Fi signals pass through walls. For this reason, the existing system cannot distinguish users' floor. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a LED fingerprinting system for accurate indoor positioning. The proposed system uses a received optical power from LEDs and LED-Identification (LED-ID) instead of the Wi-Fi RSS. In training phase, we record LED fingerprints in database at each place. In serving phase, we adopt a K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) algorithm for comparing existing data and new received data of users. We show that our technique performs in terms of CDF by computer simulation results. From simulation results, the proposed system shows that a positioning accuracy is improved by 8.6 % on average.

  • Robust and high speed underwater communication is severely limited when compared to communications in terrestial. In free space, RF communication operates over long distances at high data rates. However, the obstacle in seawater is the severe attenuation due to the conducting nature. Acoustic modems are capable of long range communication up to several tens of kilometers, but it has low data-rate, high power consumption and low propagation speed. An alternative means of underwater communication is based on optics, wherein high data rates are possible. In this paper, the characteristics of underwater channel in the range of visible wavelength is investigated. And the possibility of optical wireless communication in underwater is also described. The LED-based transceiver and CMOS sensor module are integrated in the system, and the performance of image transmission was demonstrated.

  • We propose a visible light communication system in which the color and brightness are controllable. Pulse width modulation and variable pulse position modulation (VPPM) schemes are used to control the color and brightness, respectively. A digital algorithm to decode VPPM signals is suggested and implemented. A seamless transmission is observed in a testbed experiment under various environmental conditions. The proposed scheme can be applied to emotional-lighting-based wireless optical communication.

  • This paper presents a novel shore-to-sea maritime data transmission system based on time-code diversity, using visible light in maritime environments to overcome the limitations of conventional maritime wireless communications. The proposed system is primarily comprised of existing LED-based lighthouses and maritime transceivers (marine beacons, buoys, etc.), and thus is considered cost-effective in terms of implementation. We first analyze maritime visible-light communications on the basis of the unique properties of a maritime environment, i.e. sea states (wave height, wind speed, etc.), plus atmospheric turbulence, using the Pierson-Moskowitz (PM) and JONSWAP (JS) spectrum models. It is found that the JS model outperforms the PM model, and that the coverage distance depends on the LED power and sea states. To combat maritime fading conditions that significantly degrade performance and coverage distance, we propose a time-code diversity (TCD) scheme in which the delayed versions of the original data are retransmitted using orthogonal Walsh codes. This TCD scheme is found to be superior, in that it offers three orders of magnitude in terms of BER performance, compared to a conventional (non-TCD) transmission scheme. The proposed scheme is robust and efficient in overcoming the effect of impairments present in maritime environments with a BER of approximately $10^{-5}$and a data rate of 100 Kbps at a distance of 1 km.

  • Although GPS technology for location positioning system has been widely used, it is difficult to be used in intelligent transport systems, due to the large positioning error and limited area for receiving radio signals. Thanks to the rapid development of LED technology, LED lights become popular in many applications. Especially, visible light communications (VLC) has raised a lot of interests because of the simultaneous functioning of LED illumination and communication. Recent studies on positioning system using VLC mainly focused on indoor environments and still difficult to satisfy positioning accuracy and simple implementation simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a positioning system based on VLC using the coordinate information of LEDs installed on the road infrastructure. Extracting the LED signal, obtained through VLC, from the easily accessible camera image, it is possible to estimate the position of the car on the road. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve a high positioning accuracy of 1 m when large number of pixels is utilized and the distance from the LED light is close.
