  • This paper is suitable for household plant factory by design and using both energy-saving LED and solar technology. Conventional household plant factory only depending on natural sunlight is sensitive for the change of external environment. Another a big problem of conventional common household plant factory is large power consumption. Recently interest in wellbeing food such as chemical-free is increased abruptly. To solve these two problems, this paper describes hybrid type of household plant. In particular, reducing the power photosynthesis photon flux density (PPFD) is kept uniform to enhance the growth of the plant. Ambient light sensor is adopted for the control of proper combination of sunlight and LED to keep PPFD constant.

  • Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are modulated using a square wave pulse sequence for flicker prevention and dimming control in visible light communication (VLC). In a VLC transmitter, the high and low bits of the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data are converted to two square waves of different frequencies, which continue for a finite time defined by the fill ratio in an NRZ bit time. As the average optical power was kept constant and independent of data transmission, the LED was flicker-free. Dimming control is carried out by changing the fill ratio of the square wave in the NRZ bit time. In the experiments, the illumination of the LED light was controlled in the range of approximately 19.2% to 96.2% of the continuous square wave modulated LED light. In the VLC receiver, a high-pass filter combined with a latch circuit was used to recover the transmitted signal while preventing noise interference from adjacent lighting lamps.

  • Crack propagation mechanisms of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu solder were studied in strain controlled push-pull creepfatigue conditions using the fast-fast (pp) and the slow-fast (cp) strain waveforms at 313 K. Transgranular cracking was found in the pp strain waveform which led to the cycle-dominant crack propagation and intergranular cracking in the cp strain waveform that led to the time-dominant crack propagation. The time-dominant crack propagation rate was faster than the cycle-dominant crack propagation rate when compared with J-integral range which resulted from the creep damage at the crack tip in the cp strain waveform. Clear recrystallization around the crack was found in the pp and the cp strain waveforms, but the recrystallized grain size in the cp strain waveform was smaller than that in the pp strain waveform. The cycle-dominant crack propagated in the normal direction to the specimen axis macroscopically, but the time-dominant crack propagated in the shear direction which was discussed in relation with shear micro cracks formed at the crack tip.

  • In this study, we design and develop a VLC test-bed system which has been recently issued and focused as good convergence technology in the world. We classify the developed system into transmission part including analog LED driver module, digital signal modulation module, and receiver part with light sensing module and signal demodulation module. Then we introduce important characteristics and components. We analyze some factors for each module. To validate the communication of the designed VLC system, we develop a VLC sender-receiver simulator which can control the dimming factor and flicker-free effect. From the developed system, we observed about 12Mbps of data transmission rate with 0.5m~1m of distance, without packet loss. We verified the real-time communication with multimedia streaming which can be considered as very high date rate. The developed system and technology will be useful for some converged data services like indoor positing, home appliances, and indoor parking system.

  • A recently developed Chinese cabbage cultivar, Shinhong Ssam, was cultured under different light conditions at a plant factory to evaluate effects of light on the production of functional compounds. The effects of the following combinations of red (R), blue (B), and white (W) LED light were compared to that of fluorescent light: R+B, R+W, and R+B+W. Under R+B light, the Chinese cabbage failed to grow well. In contrast, under R+W, R+B+W, and fluorescent light conditions, cabbages had similar growth rates. Cyanidin, the only anthocyanidin detected, accumulated in cabbages under LED conditions to levels more than 2-fold of that in cabbages grown under fluorescent light. Phenolic acid and flavonol levels varied subtly, whereas caffeic acid was found to be between 70- and 160-fold greater in LED-illuminated cabbages than in those exposed to fluorescent light. The amounts of free amino acids and sugars that affect the taste of vegetables were greater in the cabbages exposed to LED light than in those grown under fluorescent light conditions. In conclusion, R+W LED light produced Shinhong Ssam with greater nutritional value than those grown under R+B+W LED and fluorescent lights.

  • This study aimed to determinate the effect of fluorescent light and light-emitting diodes on the leaf morphology, growth and antioxidant capacity of Salvia plebeia. The plants were grown for 56 days after transplanting (DAT) under the fluorescent light (FL) and LEDs (White, Red and Blue (R+B, ratio 2:1), Blue, Red LED) under the same light intensity and photoperiod ($130{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, 12 hours). Leaf length, width and number of Salvia plebeia at the 56 DAT were significantly higher under the FL and red LED, and lower in the RB LED and white LED. The highest fresh and dry weights of shoot and leaf area were observed in the red LED, followed by the FL and blue LED, and the lowest in the RB LED and white LED. After 21 DAT, leaf apinasty symptom was appeared in plants grown under red LED and RB LED. The chlorophyll content was lower in the red LED. The specific leaf weight, the ratio of leaf dry weight to area, was higher in the blue LED, and lowest in the FL. No significant difference in DPPH radical scavenging activity of Salvia plebeia under the different light sources. All the integrated results suggest that the FL light is a proper light conditions for a closed cultivation of Salvia plebeia.

  • This paper proposes a novel beehive-shaped reflector for application to light-emitting diode (LED) transceivers for illumination and bi-directional visible light communication (VLC). By using a diffuse propagation model extended to line-of-sight and direct signals, the distribution of illuminance and the path loss of the transceiver are investigated to evaluate the performance of the beehive-shaped reflector. To verify bi-directional communication, a VLC-based image capture system, comprising a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor and video processor unit, is demonstrated. Real-time images captured by the CMOS camera are successfully transmitted to the monitoring system via a free-space channel at a rate of 115.2 kbps.

  • The lead content of drinking water has been restricted to less than 15 ppb by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in USA. This has led to extensive research and development work at the Materials Technology Laboratory (MTL) of CANMET, a Canadian Government research laboratory, on the development of low-lead and lead-free copper alloys for plumbing applications. Attentionhas also been focused on the environmentally friendly and energy efficient permanent mold casting process to minimize the disposal of foundry sand contaminated by lead due to the use of leaded alloys in the non-ferrous foundries. A new series of alloys called SeBiLOY contaning Bi and Se been introduced to replace lead in the leaded alloys. This paper addresses some important casting characteristics such as fluidity, hot tear resistance, mechanical properties and microstructure of lead-free alloys such as SeBiLOY III and low-lead alloys such as silicon brass, silicon bronze and yellow brass in gravity permanent mold casting.

  • Reactive oxygen species play critical role in kidney damage. Free radical-scavenging activities of Panax ginseng are known to be increased by heat-processing. The structural change of ginsenoside and the generation of Maillard reaction products (MRPs) are closely related to the increased free radical-scavenging activities. In the present study, we have demonstrated the Maillard reaction model experiment using ginsenoside Re and glycine mixture to identify the renoprotective effect of MRPs from ginseng or ginsenosides. Ginsenoside Re was transformed into less-polar ginsenosides, namely Rg2, Rg6 and F4 by heat-processing. The free radical-scavenging activity of ginsenoside Re-glycine mixture was increased in a temperature-dependant manner by heatprocessing. The improved free radical-scavenging activity by heat-processing was mediated by the generation of antioxidant MRPs which led to the protection of LLC-PK1 renal epithelial cells from oxidative stress. Although the free radical scavenging activities of less-polar ginsenosides were weak, they could protect LLC-PK1 cells from oxidative stress. Therefore, MRPs and less-polar ginsenosides contributed to the combined renoprotective effects against oxidative renal damage.

  • In this paper, a commercial phosphorescent white light-emitting diode (WLED) visible light communication (VLC) system with an equalization circuit to achieve the high modulation bandwidth was designed and demonstrated. An analytical method to examine the performance of the equalizer was carried out using a general circuit-simulator, PSpice. The equalization circuit was composed of two passive filters with resisters and a capacitor and an active filter with an op-amp. Utilizing our post-equalization technology, the ~3.5 MHz bandwidth of phosphor WLED could be extended to ~25 MHz without using an optical blue-filter. In this VLC system with a single round-type WLED and a single PIN photo-diode, ASK data transmission up to 35 Mbps at a 1m free space distance was obtained. The resulting bit-error-rate was $7.6{\times}10^{-4}$, which is less than the forward error correction (FEC) limit of $3.8{\times}10^{-3}$.
